    I'm a Tesla fan and have a Y Performance on order. However, my last 4 cars have been BMWs and its only fair to note that all scheduled maintenance is covered during the 3 year, 36k warranty period. Not the case with Mercedes. So I've never paid for oil changes, new brakes, etc on my BMWS.

    Wheel alignment and suspension components inspection... should be done yearly, or every six months on bad roadways, sorry Michigan. Every other tire rotation is a good rule of thumb. Teslas don't have a transmission, but they DO have a Gearbox(es) with differential(s), with lubricant, and an oil filter. There is not enough information on when this lubricant may need service. Wiper blades need to be replaced about every six months or as needed. It is strongly recommended to "clean" the brake pads and discs surface each and every single time you drive the car by using the brake pedal sparingly whenever you start driving. That also helps with the guide pins binding problem in the brake calipers. Brake fluid's biggest enemy (besides high temp. breakdown) is actually water contamination. A good tell-tale is the change in color. You can also have it checked by having it tested with a contamination strip. It only takes seconds to test it. Tire pressures: check them every two weeks. It only takes seconds and it single-handedly will give you consistent range and saves $$$$$$ with tire replacement.

    Nice informative video! I think you’re missing the higher insurance cost of a Tesla, especially the much higher premium (2-3X) of collision coverage.

    • @DanielsBrew
      @DanielsBrew  3 года назад

      Thank you! Actually, I've heard differently from many folks. The conversation on that point seems divided - I've heard lots of people echo the sentiment you have about insurance being higher, but I've also heard from others that insurance is slightly cheaper, due to the safety features that are taken into account by the insurance companies. It seems like it can vary depending on where you live and what agency you have coverage with. Hopefully it's cheaper for you, if you decide to buy a Tesla!

      $50 oil change is way too cheap. It’s more like $100

    • @moomtaz1
      @moomtaz1 3 года назад

      @@ylimele $50 per oil change is about right for a car with non-synthetic oil. Maybe as low as $30. That said, things like requiring synthetic oil bumps it up. So does how much oil the vehicle requires, example is a suburban that requires approximately 8 quarts, rather than 4 or 5.
      A BMW 5 series uses synthetic and costs about $150 at a dealership, but only requires an oil change once a year. Costs more but you’re doing it less, so it evens out.

    The other factor to consider is residual value at the end of 5 years (what you can sell the car for). The Tesla's resale value will be much higher than the comps so your total cash out over the 5 years will be much lower. This was a key decision in our purchase of a Model Y.

    Gas in Los Angeles is minimum $4.50 a gallon.
    Plus you don't have to replace the brake pads. From what everyone at Tesla tells me.
    So six years of owning those cars in Los Angeles is like $30k with gas being 20k.
    Because of traffic and Los Angeles my wife has to fill up 4-6 times a month.
    So we bought a Tesla. Gas was killing us.

    Where does a tire rotation cost $150? Also the maintenance schedule is super advantageous for the ice examples. I'm totally on board with tesla but not a fair comparison.

    • @DanielsBrew
      @DanielsBrew  3 года назад

      Hi z23rdst, the tire rotation cost I took it from the what Angie's list told me was the cost of a 4 tire rotation and alignment ($75 for 2 wheels, double that for 4 wheels).
      Also for the maintenance schedule - I took that from the Model Y owner's manual itself. If the manual is not correct, then that would obviously affect the calculations, but absent of any other reference source on the model Y, I had to take it for face value. Let me know if there are different sources that provide a more accurate maintenance schedule for the Model Y and I'd be happy to look at it.

  • @2013AirForce
    @2013AirForce 3 года назад +2

    I think you’re missing something on the electric rate. You included the basic use charge but missing the full picture of supply charges and distribution charges (distribution charge, transmission charge, etc.). For instance, the national average is $0.15 per kWh. In Southern California it’s around $0.20 per kWh.
    In my case (very high rates in Massachusetts, btw) it’s $0.25 per kWh. $0.11 for energy supply, and $0.14 for distribution, transmission, renewable energy charge, energy efficiency charge, and EV charge.

    • @DanielsBrew
      @DanielsBrew  3 года назад

      Hey Patrick, good observation. I actually left off those charges on purpose and only counted the usage charge in my calculation b/c the transmission and distribution charges are minuscule for me and also charges that I would pay on my home electricity regardless of having an EV. But I also happen to live in a state that has one of the lowest electricity rates in the nation - so you are absolutely correct that your costs would vary depending on your location. But even considering all of that, the savings vs gasoline would still be enough to make it worthwhile.

      What you are missing, and it will (eventually) be a very big item, is the gasoline tax. In most states, the combination of the federal gas tax plus local state taxes can add up to more than $0.50 per gallon. Somehow or other, the states are going to have to address this issue, that is the loss of revenue since the electric car needs no gasoline, and hence no tax is generated, but roads still need maintenance. In a very real sense, in a way, had the Post Office thought about what email might do to their revenue stream, twenty years back they might have put a small tax on each email, say a $0.001 charge per transmission, which would have looked inconsequential but added significant and continuing revenues to their income stream. They didn’t and it would be impossible to do so today. My bottom line is that you should equalize, in some manner, for an eventual tax of some sort on the electrical usage in order to deal with this issue. Most readers will squawk loudly, but that is to be expected.

    • @DanielsBrew
      @DanielsBrew  3 года назад

      Hey Richard, that's a interesting point. I can definitely see it going in that direction in the future. At that point, I'll probably have a new updated video that revises this cost exercise with all of the new costs included. Thanks for the input!

The cost from that standpoint would be variable depending on a person's driving record and what carrier they go with - and also whether or not they have it bundled with their home insurance, etc. That made it a difficult element to include here from a comparison standpoint, but you are definitely right to point it out.

      Good points, Trent. For insurance, because it varies so widely by user's driving history and what carrier they go with, I decided to leave that one out of the calculations. Really good video with a lot of smart analysis. I would've added my 2 cents on Potential fuel savings of $4,300. Comparing to BMW, or MB in your stats, you can save with model Y just under $9,000 over the 6-year cycle. But if you pay $4,300 upfront vs. fuel cars owners paying for fuel over the 6 years, this brings those saving to almost nothing taking in consideration the inflation. So, I personally do not feel there are any fuel savings with tesla. It's just a fancy commercial trick. To be clear, I'm not talking here about Eco- and other benefits Tesla brings to the auto-market.

    BMW X3 doesn't have a timing belt, it has a timing chain that doesn't need to be replaced in the 6 years of ownership.
    The cost of the tires are missing, about $1,600/set and the owner will go through a few sets in the 6 years of ownership

    Your electric rate of .06 is extremely low and your gasoline cost is much higher than most of USA. Also, your estimate of replacing brake pads every 2 years is ridiculous. I have had my Ford Fusion 88,000 and am still on original brakes. The Model Y savings is much less than your comparison, maybe 800 to 1000 per year. You must also calculate the lost opportunity cost of the additional up front of the model Y. In favor of the model Y is the likelihood of a higher trade in/resale value. Both of these should also be considered for your comparison to be complete.

    Nice breakdown but, dude, $150 for a tire rotation? Typically it costs about $30.

    • @moomtaz1

      @@DanielsBrew I suppose the other thing you have to consider is that the maintenance on some ICE luxury cars is crazy. I had to get my brake pads changed on a BMW once and the parts alone were $1200. Contrast that to say a Chevy where they are less than $100. That fact alone is a plus for a vehicle that doesn’t need brake replacement as often.
      FYI: based on limited research (meaning google) tire rotation by a Tesla dealer is $75. If you go to somewhere like Midas it’ll be $50 or less.

    I bought a Model Y. My choice wasn't about cost or carbon. I love the simplicity. No fluids, pumps, belts, exhaust, etc. Once you've driven a Tesla you'll get it. You feel connected in a way that can't be described until you drive one. The week prior to getting my Model Y I drove my friend's 911 Carrera 4s. My Y feels tighter and faster. And the dual-clutch was frightening in the 911. It worked amazingly well but I'd never be comfortable owning something so complex.
    One note on cost: Others say that Teslas go through tires faster. I believe that is probably true because I drive it harder and faster than ICE cars.

Typical rates in Orange County is $.26 and running up to $.35 per kWh. Using these figures makes a big difference in your figures from double to triple. Also look at the price Tesla supercharger as well. There are fears in a Tesla and they do require lubricants. A Tesla is no a decent choice unless you are a gob smacked green washer Elon lover. Don’t mind terrible service and being ignored.

My transmission cost is $0.0024 and my distribution cost is $0.04. That means if I add it all up, it comes out to about $0.10 per kWh. But when I charge my Model Y - I only charge at off peak hours, between 2am and 4am, so the costs could be lower. If you live in CA, your numbers would definitely be higher, but there are places in the nation that have very low electricity charges.

    I was going to wait it out for a dual motor cybertruck but now with Tesla shares increasing how they are I think I might be able to get a Tesla sooner. Maybe just a lease to start until the cybertruck comes out. I do have a business plan in mind and for those that do not own their own house for Tesla solar I think there is another option. As you well know SpaceX and starlink are run by Elon Musk he as well is the CEO of Tesla. Solar panels are tightly folded to expand once they are in orbit. Consider having a solar shelter you could quickly unfold and have it securely surrounding your vehicle and keeping you and it out of the dust heat or cold. If the parking lot had a place that you could connect your Tesla to the grid not only would the solar be charging your vehicle but the battery could also be charging the grid. Of course the vehicle to grid software would make it easy for your Tesla to be making you money when it's parked and your solar shelter could continue offering power to the grid if you don't need to bring it with you. Let me know what you think of these ideas or if you have some of your own to add. I do appreciate all of you and your comments. Now this is the time to fix our future fast!

    Secondly, anyone in th car industry knows putting 50% down on a car is rare. Thirdly, who is paying $150 to rotate tires except maybe the Tesla dealer.. If your paying $1800 to rotate tires for 5 years, you might have sucker tattoos on your head. You totally forgot to add tire replacement costs as it is probably the highest expense of driving a tesla. Teslas go thru tires faster than any other car I've seen. There's a video with a guy who drove his tesla 200k miles and he breaks down all his maintenance and service. He paid beaucoup bucks with tesla for front suspension replacements, emu computers and display screens.. Just those alone totalled over 7K dollars.
