I feel so bad for her husband. Imagine if your S/O went missing and you couldn't tell if they abandoned you or worse, AND now you have to take care of your family while mourning but don't know what to tell them because you have no idea what happened, AND everyone thinks you had something to do with it and you didn't but but you have no way to prove your innocence, AND you would never know the truth until you were up in heaven chilling with them, all on Christmas Eve. This is why I believe in the last goodbye principle: You never know when you'll tell someone goodbye for the last time, so make every time really count just in case. Give'em a big hug and tell them you love them like they're leaving for war, even if it's just a trip to the grocery store.
I like your mindset. Many people think this is dramatic but it's really not. People really fail to realize how many sickos are out there or how easy it is to get into a car crash.

That e fit not only looked creepy af but also like a 45 yo lady and not a 25 yo young woman. This might be an additional reason why she wasn't recognised imo.
Only 45? from the E-fit I would've assumed she was in her 60s or 70s. I agree that the bad E-fit might've been one of the biggest reasons nobody recognized her for so long. I understand the need to exaggerate prominent features of the victims, but that one just did her so dirty IMO. there's a difference between exaggerating someone's existing features and just completely botching them and the artist there did the latter more than the former.
I agree. Age 30-50 is a 20 year age gap and the family would’ve seen this scary e fit and saw it was def not who they were looking for. Plus whoever called in and said that they were her and she’s fine, I think could’ve been either the killer, the killers partner, maybe the killer made one of his victims call and pretend to be her, or the husband was sick of being accused so he had someone call and pretend to be her to make some of the pressure go away.
@@ToastyDanzig Agree with the first part, the Efit being so old-looking compared to her actual age is probably what made finding her take so long. I also would like to propose the idea that it was actually her that called, but she was actually coerced into saying that by the killer/kidnapper.
@@peggedyourdad9560 ooooh that’s a possibility. I would have to rewatch to see when exactly that phone call was made, whether it was before or after her head was found. But yea that’s something I didn’t figure cuz I assumed the phone call was made after her head was found.
*11:54 - I meant one month, not two months. 🙇♂ This is just one of the many cold cases that have been solved in 2022 - I'll make a video covering some others soon... Any others you'd like me to cover?
Depending on how far along she was it could be a situation where someone wanted her baby! There have been cases where couples have taken pregnant women to get their babies. If a couple offered her a ride she would have been more likely to accept it, because a couple wouldn't seem so suspicious or dangerous to most hitchhikers. It could also explain the months she was alive after she disappeared, since they may have waited until they thought she was far enough along for the baby to survive. It's a horrible thought, but sadly is something possible. It's wonderful that her family finally know what happened, at least enough for her children to know that she never left them voluntarily!
Well she was a 25-year-old redhead whose head was on perfectly straight. But they said that the decapitated woman was between 30 and 50 and then they did an e-fit of a woman of about 70 (45 years older than the actual victim) with dark Auburn hair and a head completely crooked to one side. Sometimes I think when the extreme crazy drawings of people work, it’s just luck. A vague E-fit May be hard to match to people, but if somebody who looks like that is missing it would make for a better chance to match them up. Yes, the creepy fit has kept it popular on social media but mostly amongst people who weren’t even born when the case occurred, let alone people who have information on it. Instead the terrible e-fit, and not great police work, kept the person who had been reported missing and identified for nearly 30 years.
i completely agree. ive never seen one so completely different. there are no similarities at all.. in his previous video i can kind of see how they would help people who know tht victims, but this one wouldve Never helped anyone. im glad it helped it get big bc its been kept relevant but the ball was dropped so many times
Actually, the original sketch of her at 0:58, if it'd been drawn with the mouth closed, actually looked a lot more like her. Especially since the hairstyle and texture were right. Not to mention the broader age range. I know Lazy has an argument for the case holding interest, but the interest came with the expansion of the internet and it was a person who either wasn’t born or was a baby/child when it happened who got Lund identified. So yeah, I have to agree with you. I don’t know why the e-fit deviated so much from the composite sketch.
Also got to add they said 'a male with upper body strength' when that came up all I thought was...'or a body builder/women' duhh.... And yeah guess who made a call to police..a women.
I can see her wry neck in the pictures, actually, but it's subtle. If you can't see it, that's not surprising; look at her face. It's not symmetrical at all. One of her eyes is higher than the other. That's classic torticollis (wry neck). It actually causes the muscles of the face to change and causes asymmetry of the face. Her wry neck was probably much more pronounced years ago, and got better with time. Despite that, this e-fit might have been better if it had the correct hairstyle and eye shape. Also, it might have helped if it didn't look like it was made from Play-Doh.
Ina (pronounced "eye nuh" has had several seriously messed up murders for such a small town. It felt creepy everytime I drove through to get to school.
It's not the first time he mispronounced words, like he read women [wimen] - plural as woman - singular 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ and that's considering it's his main language. ....
It's sad that this beautiful young mother is now mostly remembered as that horrible e-fit. They're designed to help find them, what else are they going to do, but still. Thanks and I'd love more of these ! I had no idea that woman was ever ID'd and I'd love to hear more stories putting real faces, names, and stories to those terrifying e-fits.
I'd be interested to know the leads that the police may be following now that they've identified Susan. Scary to think that someone is out there (or may have finally passed but never faced justice) who is capable of decapitating someone. The fact the rest of her has never been found is eerie too. It's terrifying never knowing "who" you're walking by every day and what secrets they may keep.
How pregnant was she when she went missing? Did her abductors keep her until she gave birth so they could keep her baby? Was the person who picked her up and the woman who made the call the same person? So very heartbreaking and awful.
Baby is surely dead. The woman who made that call was also certainly involved. Incredibly unlikely that an unrelated third party played a "prank" like that.
@@sebastianelytron8450 I was thinking they kept her till she gave birth then kept the child. You hear about that sort of thing 🤔. It seems like a stretch, I agree.
It doesn't seem like a stretch at all to me and I think you have a great mind for even thinking of it. If she was very far along, they could've kept that baby. And very possibly the woman who made the call wanted the baby. You never know
I agree the creepiness of the E-Fit kept the case in public memory, but it may have sent investigators and sleuths down the wrong rabbit holes. Could they have matched it to Susan Lund's picture if they had made an E-Fit with a less pronounced rhy neck and was in her mid 20's? The comparison at 11:28 shows even the new E-Fit was more like an age-progressed Lund whose rhy neck had gotten significantly worse
And that original sketch of her at 0:58, if it'd been drawn with the mouth closed, actually looked a lot more like her. A broader age range and the hairstyle/texture actually looked a lot more like her’s. I know there's an argument for the case holding interest, but I agree with you that it stalled the case. (edit: I haven’t seen pictures of her with her mouth open so maybe the teeth were accurate, which would be crucial to identifying her.)
imagine being someone who routinely sees up close and has to reconstruct the victims of murder and mutilation, i'm sure beside the official reason given, some of these artists wanted to share their trauma with the world
I remember back in the early 80s me (age about 8) , my single mother and baby sister would have to walk to the 7-11 for food that my mom paid for with food stamps. Cars would stop and offer us rides that mama refused because we didn't live that far. Im thankful that she did.

Who ever did the e-fit should get the sack. It looked nothing like poor Susan. Maybe she could have been identified sooner and the killer caught. Sickened to hear that she was pregnant at her time of murder and saddened to hear that her husband died before identification was made.
i dont think its too far off. how close do you think any artist rendering is in real life? i mean the ghislane one is pretty spot on. as were the tony and john podesta sketches
They didn’t know how bad her neck issue was at the time. Remember, she was decapitated. Her head could’ve also been in the woods for 2 weeks max, so the decomp could’ve been pretty far along, even if they say it wasn’t that bad. A lot of the details pertaining to her heads discovery explains why the e-fit looked like it did. They were trying their best to emphasize whatever could’ve made her more recognizable, and even though there was a lot wrong making it harder to identify her, at the very least, it was so uncanny that it looped back around and kept her in the public eye long enough to be identified through DNA. That’s a win in my book.
He made a video about e-fits. The reason why the details are so extravagant is so people could recognize them quickly and they don’t want them looking average. It did stay in your mind and caught your attention. That’s what is supposed to do tbh
There's a website that's chock full of missing persons sketches and facial recreation... it's such a creepy feeling and I know I shouldn't be creeped out by the poor unidentified victims but they're just so uncanny and I've heard that's by design. Yea they’re uncanny by design bc the artists specifically emphasize the most defining/unique features of their face. There’s a lot of evidence that it massively increases the chances of recognition. If they make the defining features much more prevalent, more chance for the brain to pick up on it and match it to someone you know.
@@jzdude01 Right! I've heard that before and I think it's very interesting and makes perfect sense. I remember watching one case, I'm sure you know of it, where the missing gal had a "chipmunk" like face and he mother recognized the accentuated features!

No one would have thought it was possible for her to ever be identified, cause we didn't know about dna analysis, I really hope that in a not too long future something else will be discovered, which will give all cold cases a huge push. Even if people passed hundreds of years ago and there's no one left to mourn them and nobody left to be arrested, everyone deserves justice, especially the nameless deserve to get their identity back at the very least...
This happened in the country outside of the small town I live in. Jeff Bullard, the sheriff mentioned in this story, was one of my instructors in college. I work in Ina (eye-nah, not ee-na). My mother told me of this story when I was a kid, and it terrified me.
I never even considered that people retelling true crime/unsolved mysteries like this would continue to keep them alive and maybe one day gain answers. It makes sense now in hindsight, but I can't believe I didn't even think of online spooky videos having that kind of significance beyond entertainment. That's really awesome!
As a man I would NEVER let my wife walk ANYWHERE for 8 miles. Especially pregnant, at night, in the cold of December. ALL OVER SOME FUCKIN PIE. HELL NAH. If my family wants some damn pie that bad and we don't have a vehicle then as the man of the house it's me that should go out in the cold at night to get it and leave my family in the safety and warmth of the house. What the hell was her husband thinking! And how the hell don't u own a freaking land line phone at home? Even back in 1992 home land lines were a SUPER COMMON INEXPENSIVE HOUSEHOLD PRODUCT. How was this family living their lives? They must of been living a very hard very poor lifestyle. Really sad.
@Lazy Masquerade I've always loved your channel but you are one hell of a kind person. I wasn't expecting you to change the thumbnail and even I was thinking that it being creepy to me was just a me problem, but thanks for changing it anyway.
Honestly I don't think most of them are skilled enough to pull that off the way it's described. No one would recognize her from that sculpture, it looks nothing like her. To me it's honestly disrespectful especially because it doesn't seem to work
The point is to not make them look scary to make them more memorable, the point is to emphasize defining/unique features of the person. It’s been shown to massively increase chances of recognition bc our brains don’t store high def memories. It remembers key/unique details then fills in the blanks later. So by over emphasizing what the brain most easily remembers, it makes it significantly easier for and more likely to get someone to recognize the forensic artwork.
@@jzdude01 everyone knows that already. its pretty obvious that this case was pushed way too extreme and theres honestly no reason it shouldve been. it did nothing but freak people out and is likely part of why her identity took so long to uncover
Composite portraits scare the hell out of me, I literally scroll down and just listen to the video. Is there a "-phobia" word for the fear of composite portraits?
Well, "-phobia" has a Greek root, and Google suggests "afýsikos" for "unnatural, abnormal, freakish, _uncanny,_ absonant, constrained". I don't know any Greek so someone'll tell me I'm wrong, but how about coining *"Afysikophobia"* for this?
I got so happy when i learned that Amy Michael along with her team, discovered the woman's identity. I mean, obviously the crime is horrible, tragic and heart-breaking. But at least the truth about her name was discovered, as well as her whereabouts for her family who were looking for her. It's extremely sad that she was also pregnant when she was murdered. Also her kids and her husband endured SO much and continue to do so. The pain never lives. But at least now, something changed. Technology can offer SO much if it is used for good and it is so nice when cold cases are being solved. They offer some type of closure to the family. May she rest in peace...Now she will be with her husband too
What a heartbreaking case =( That poor Lady, her poor family... There is no way ro imagine what horror and pain all of them had to go through. Living years of your life not knowing what happened to your wife or mother is so cruel. At least Susan has finally her identity back, and her children now know what happened to their mother. May she and her husband rest in peace.
Regarding Susan Lund, another question that popped into my head right away once she was identified was - why did a pregnant woman walk to the store instead of her husband? Surely he could have called her sister & just passed on a message for her. Then when it was revealed that the walk to the store was 8 miles EACH WAY, it just made me even more curious/suspicious as to why a man would allow his pregnant wife to walk that distance at night on Xmas eve. WHAT?!?! I don't know, maybe I'm being overly paranoid but something just doesn't sit right with that whole scenario of him staying with the kids & making her walk alone at night. The fact that she may have planned to hitch a ride makes it even worse. What husband would be ok with his wife getting into a stranger's car? These weren't the days of Uber or Lyft... What, no taxi? Weird, that is all I'm saying. Did the cops even question this? How awful & tragic for her kids to grow up thinking she had left them & never knowing what happened or why... Then to find out the truth, I can't imagine what they are feeling. I'm so glad she got her name back & that her family has closure, although the pain & unanswered questions will always remain... RIP
Yes 16 miles would be insane, however it was 8 miles round trip. Personally I think even being 4 miles each way my husband would never let me walk that alone at night in winter. But we don’t know their circumstances and it’s easy to judge with limited info.

I really "hope" that the phone call was intentional to throw off leads, made maybe by the next victim under duress before being killed too, or even by one of the killers, because the thought that some random woman decided to just lie for fun and it costed a family to think their wife/mother had walked out on them makes my blood boil more than just knowing someone killed an innocent pregnant lady on Christmas...
Great video! I first heard about this case from a Dark5 video a number of years ago. It's amazing how many long-unidentified murder victims have finally been given their identities back - i.e.: Septic Tank Sam, The Somerton Man, The Lime Lady, etc. Still such a shame that Susan's family spent decades thinking she had abandoned them, and her husband didn't live to get answers. Now let's just hope her killer(s) can finally be brought to justice.
It's unsettling to realize how vulnerable you are without dependable transport. Everyone in their own bubble, surrounded by closed doors... barriers everywhere. Isolated in a crowd of strangers lost in their own mental mazes.
She went to walk 8 MILES to the grocery store… ON Christmas Eve. And for a xmas pie. For some reason I can’t get past that one part of the story. I just forgot how normal it was for something like that to be a thing back in the 1992 era.
Authorities should be trying to find out if a headless pregnant woman’s body was found anywhere around the time her head was found. But it didn’t say how far along she was in her pregnancy. I hope they keep looking for her killer. My heart goes out to her children, family & friends. RIP Susan Lund🕊
Imagine being a police officer trying to sketch out the face of the suspect based on what the eyewitness described, only to finish the drawing for a horrifying result. Police sketch can be weird and funny sometimes, but other times that it gets straight into the uncanny valley. (I'm looking at you The Intruder)
That’s the point. It’s supposed to go into the uncanny valley. When they make accurate reconstructions the chances of reports of people recognizing the people in the sketches goes way down. So instead forensic artists work to over emphasize unique/defining features of the person bc it makes the brain much more likely to recognize it.
The worst thing you can do is look up jane and john doe portraits/photos online. There are thousands of them, still waiting to be identified, while some look relativly calm others are decomposed and have a disturbing gaze.
How does that terrible e fit match Susan,no wonder no one identified her.reminds me of a case from my home town when a Jane doe was unidentified, later it was found that the details released to media were wildly inaccurate like height difference of 5inches etc.
I've noticed something about these recreations: if you blur your vision they are less uncanny and more similar to what they most likely look like. I never noticed this before but figured if i share this maybe it could help identify someone. Not likely but worth sharing I hope
Do you like those 3D images that are hidden in weird patterns, and you kind of have to make your eyes go slack to see them? Stereograms, I think they're called. I love them and what you're describing is in a way, the way you look into those odd images. Some people can't see them at all, like my hubby, no matter how long he gazes into them but I have no problem seeing them. They're a lot of fun if you're not already familiar with them. But I still don't see much resemblance, the composite looks like an old bubbie while the woman in real life was young and pretty.
if I ever get murdered and people make an e fit of me that is so unrecognisable, so incredibly far away from ANYTHING I look like, that i go unidentified for decades... I swear to god I'm going to haunt the people involved for the rest of my life
Finally solving this Jane Doe identity, and still no happy end. Kids grew up thinking their mother left them, husband who was accused of having something to do with her going missing died shortly before her "finding", and the killer might still be out there or dead, having lived a life on the run without being punished. Let alone the identity of the person who called the police...
I've listened to thousands of cases of thousands of innocent people being senselessly killed, but this one just makes me so sad. A pregnant 25-year-old mother of three taken on Christmas Eve while trying to buy pie for her family. And then they fumble her case and put out that monstrous reconstruction, which is the only thing most of the public will ever see of her. And then the children have to grow up wondering if their mom left because she didn't love them enough. And then the husband had to spend the rest of his life being eyed with suspicion. Not to mention the fact that her baby almost certainly died and they'll probably never find the rest of her body, or the killer if he's even still alive. It's just such an awful case from every angle. Some people truly are monsters.
I'm normally pretty accustomed to creepy composites. I'm on the Grateful Doe subreddit and searching for people's identities is a hobby of mine. But lemme tell ya that the girl with the "chipmunk like face" freaks me out. I'm very glad that she got identified, but that composite has haunted me on more than one occasion.

Oo
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who does that

Poor lady. I feel just awful for her and her family, the pain must have been unbearable losing a mother and wife and having no closure. Not to mention that she was pregnant. My heart goes out to them and i hope they're doing well.
And the police telling everyone she ran away
One of the worst parts for me is the fact that her husband was accused of murdering her and he died before his name could be cleared. Could you imagine losing your wife, having no idea what happened to her, and then being blamed for it for the rest of your life? God damn

They literally made the e-fit look about the age she'd be now instead of back then

I think that would've traumatized ANYBODY for life, no matter their age.
That's not why i kept her locked up... not for just a baby.
This theory could also explain who made the false call.
This is what I was thinking. Unfortunately we don't know far along she was.
@@nickyblue4866 wtf is wrong with you?
@@jedijessic I think he said three months when she went missing
@@philping2102 I was thinking that myself

How pregnant was she when she went missing? Did her abductors keep her until she gave birth so they could keep her baby? Was the person who picked her up and the woman who made the call the same person? So very heartbreaking and awful.
So long ago no one will ever know
Baby is surely dead.

@Rich Perez right bc it doesn’t help things. Just makes it a lot harder.
The face does stick out…but not in a way that helps the case.
imagine being someone who routinely sees up close and has to reconstruct the victims of murder and mutilation, i'm sure beside the official reason given, some of these artists wanted to share their trauma with the world
Also they really got her nose wrong.

I think what really jars with people about the e-fit is it does actually look like a decapitated head. 🥺
Of a much older person than the actual victim.
I think a lot of recreations miss the way that death changes how muscles are held. I get wry neck from muscle spasms occasionally and I hold my neck straight when it happens.

Have you ever seen anybody dead or alive look like that horrendous e~fit?
i dont think its too far off. how close do you think any artist rendering is in real life? i mean the ghislane one is pretty spot on. as were the tony and john podesta sketches
They made her look like she had severe cerebral palsy 😕
He made a video about e-fits. The reason why the details are so extravagant is so people could recognize them quickly and they don’t want them looking average. It did stay in your mind and caught your attention. That’s what is supposed to do tbh
Thank you for this! I am so happy that her family finally has some answers and that her name and identity has finally been returned to her!

Yea they’re uncanny by design bc the artists specifically emphasize the most defining/unique features of their face. There’s a lot of evidence that it massively increases the chances of recognition. These police sketches genuinely scare me. That's the point of them I guess, it makes the faces more memorable even if it's less realistic

That poor Lady, her poor family...
RIP
These are a lot of my questions also.
It was an 8 mile round trip. 4 miles each way. Some people like walking. If she regularly walked, why would he be so controlling as to stop her?
she was pregnant, not disabled.

@@jzdude01 Seems fair enough.
Lazy, I love you and your videos. But that E-fit picture is absolute nightmare fuel.
7:33 this might be your worst transition yet
I can’t believe I’ve made it this far in life and have never heard the term, “E-fit”! Shocker.
The worst thing you can do is look up jane and john doe portraits/photos online.
There are thousands of them, still waiting to be identified, while some look relativly calm others are decomposed and have a disturbing gaze.
The e-fit is straight up a sketch of the victims mutilated face after decomposition and they went with it
How does that terrible e fit match Susan,no wonder no one identified her.reminds me of a case from my home town when a Jane doe was unidentified, later it was found that the details released to media were wildly inaccurate like height difference of 5inches etc.
Just woke up and this notification scared the hell out of me. Good job, Lazy. 😂
Imagine those two kids who found a human head in the brush. That had to be traumatic!
The king has returned
Didn’t expect the detective to contact would be 10 minutes from my hometown. Crazy how things connect
Why is no one talking about the husband seemingly okay with letting his wife walk that far for a pie? Couldn’t offer a ride?
if I ever get murdered and people make an e fit of me that is so unrecognisable, so incredibly far away from ANYTHING I look like, that i go unidentified for decades...
My happy place is Lazy Masquerade! The intro causes a warm & fuzzy feeling!
I have seen this photo so much over the years. She was a beautiful woman its so sad.
Seeing these kind of pictures at night are uneasy on the mind,,,it gives nightmares😰
They were embarrassed to find the head? I'd be horrified, but that's me.
Off the top of my head, the first thing that comes to mind is the Bible Belt Strangler. I’m not sure if the time period would fit, but the victimology and location do. It’s just a thought.
Love your content man! Literally some of the best true crime narration on RUclips.
God that sketch is beyond disturbing I was afraid to even click this video tbh but at the same time I do think how scary the sketch is kept people interested in this case
Orla , that sketch of "U" does not give "U" justice , goddess !!!!
How I could POSSIBLY know that is HATEFUL thinking on your part ??
WTF ??? ( Jesus wept .... )
EDIT // Update // The 2 little girls that first saw the skull were 'devil dog' cultists !!
@@stevenattanasso2003 who are you? Wtf
I hope you start telling more stories about true horror stories that happened to people. Me and my daughter's miss those.
Thanks Lazy for another unique story. Love your style of story telling. 💜
