All these cases are sad. But Maurice's is especially terrifying. I'm not even 38 years old. but the idea of being (falsely) locked up that long is just so beyond me. as some other commentators said, that man deserves the world and I hope he'll find a way to live the rest of his live in peace and comfort.
The jury who convicted him ought to be put against a wall & shot IMHO. I mean, who convicts somebody for a life altering sentence on the back of zero evidence FFS.?
@@deathbywords He is a better man than I, I would be unbelievably bitter and vengeful after that. I would have dedicated the rest of my life to tearing down the broken system that got me into that situation to begin with. I totally agree. I feel so bad for Maurice. District attorney that refused to test the DNA, should have to go to jail for the extra 20 years that Maurice was in jail. What a criminal the DA is!! I would love to have Mr. Maurice and his family at my house for a celebratory dinner and stay, in someway to show that not all of us are stupid evil humans
Maurice's case is disturbing...38 years of his life erased for something he had nothing to do with. Whoever made the decision to not run a DNA test the first time needs to face repercussions

@@fullmetalmello Yeah but he appealed to have tests run in 2000 & they fucking denied him. Both whoever was part of that denial & the original jury who convicted him based upon zero evidence should put against a wall & shot IMHO.
The story about the Somerton Beach Man ended up being kind of sad. A man who loved culture, with a broken marriage, practically no friends, and who probably committed suicide on a beach somewhere in Australia. What an unhappy story.
@@lilliputianhitcher3808 Its still sad that none of his family ever claimed his body or looked for him. The video says some of his closer family members never even met him.
4:20 the fact that one of the girls have been in contact with such a psycho while he wasn't even the one who killed them is just insane. This is a sick and effed up world we live in.
Goes to show that children are more likely to be targeted and kidnapped by people they do know rather then strangers; and how there's more to a person then what the communtity sees, unfortunately.
that wouldnt work nowadays, if anything they are less powerful now, back in the 2000s annd 90s underage girls would often date 20y guys nowadays most of those relationships are way less common
There's the very real possibility that Maurice Hastings had to wait so long for a DNA test because the authorities did not want him exonerated. They'd rather an innocent person so to jail for life than admit they had to wrong guy. It's disgusting.
And he probably got arrested and charged for the crimes due to racist bias, too. And then the tests were refused probably because of that and a bias against convicts.
Wouldn't be surprised if the police didn't release the name of the real killer because it was a white guy and they don't want the racial question brought into it.
No it’s because DNA testing was horrible in the 80s-90s, it was invented in 1984. It wasn’t really used much back then because it was 1. Very expensive and 2. Pretty unreliable. The technology was in it’s infancy. If he got a DNA test back in the 80s it might’ve said he didn’t do it, but it also might’ve said that he did it. DNA testing as we know it today it’s more of a modern thing, it wasn’t really reliable until the 2000s. Not much people know this but American paternity shows were the first ones to use reliable and accurate DNA tests.
Honestly, never thought story 1 would be solved. Brooo Maurice deserves everything from life. Whoever sent him down needs repercussions. That's disgusting.
Stories like his are the reason that I don’t believe in the death penalty, even if there are people who deserve it. If he would have been sentenced to death then he’d be gone, and the possibility of even one innocent person being killed is absolutely unacceptable. His situation is still a travesty, but at least he was released and had his name cleared
@@TheFawse Yeah that's kind of where I'm at with the death penalty - definitely people who deserve it but innocent people getting put to death is totally unacceptable and with a life sentence, they still get the chance to clear their name eventually - even though innocent people in prison is messed up too.
I can't believe the Somerton Man case was finally solved. That has always been one of the most mysterious cases in true crime. It's been so long that I was sure it would remain unsolved forever. To finally know the answer after theorizing about it for many years is really strange. As is usually the case, the truth turns out to be much blander than fiction. Just a normal guy with a broken marriage who decided to kill himself on a beach, leaving this world with his beloved poetry. However, him NOT being related to Jo's son is pretty insane. a 10-20 million to 1 chance? Honestly, the fact that a case with so many clues straight out of a spy thriller that all turned out to have fairly mundane explanations is crazier than the case itself . Jo's refusal to talk, Taman Shud, the "coded message", the luggage, the secret pocket, no one who could identify him, all of it not adding up to anything.
In my opinion a possible theory could be that Charles Webb just saw Jo somewhere on the street and saw that her son looked very similar to him. He probably approached her, talked to her about it, then they talked about how his marriage fell and how his son would've looked just like Jo's son had he had one, they probably exchanged numbers for a possible friendship, that's probably what happened, that's why Jo was so shaken and disturbed to fiind out that the man was found dead. I mean imagine you meeting someone and then you fiind out the very next days that he's found dead randomly, it would disturb anyone.

Maurice's case is just depressing, half of his life taken away for something he hasn't done. What makes it even more depressing is the fact that his mother passed away just four months before she ever got to see him free, i hope he enjoys his life to the fullest.
Now imagine how many more people just like him are still rotting in prison right now for something they didn't do and most them will probably never even have the chance to be proven innocent. No matter how much some monsters deserve to die, cases like these is why I am against the death penalty, some people were executed and later proven innocent. Based on past cases it's estimated that around 4% of the inmates on death roll could actually be innocent. Innocent people don't deserve to be executed for the crimes of others.
@@stevonwhite8933 I agree and I do believe it's much higher percentage in reality, just when it comes to numbers I go with the ones that are most commonly referred and known as a whole because even if I believe it's more than that, I have no way to verify the numbers more specifically. One thing is for sure - the system is rotten and it has been for a long time.
The Abby and Libby case has always chilled me to the bone because of the audio recording. So glad to see that someone has finally been charged in that case.
@Zelina even if he is "proven guilty" and "convicted" it doesn't mean it is suddenly an absolute. If the man is truly innocent but is wrongly convicted does it make a difference when the RUclipsrs put him in their videos?
@Zelina I agree that a lot of RUclipsrs, maybe most, use other people, other people's pain, for content and make money off of tragedy and injury. It's part of this twisted and broken world
@Zelina we do know that the man was charged with two counts of murder at the very least. Down the Hill Podcast and Murder Sheet went into much more detail. Innocent till proven guilty, yes. But there's cause and reason for the excitement surrounding his arrest.
His case is an example why, despite me having zero moral problems with putting a murderer to death, I still oppose the death penalty. "Where there is life, there is hope"... and since the legal system is an imperfect human system, the benefit of the doubt needs to be adhered to. If we had a perfect method of determining guilt, my opinion would be different - but we don't. So let those wrongly convicted have all the time they need to prove their innocence.

So jails that the government should take care of are run by private contractors, _while aviation passengers logistics, that would benefit from a custom-fit and lean private security,_ *is handled by yet another bloated alphabet agency.* It almost feels like the cronyist government sold our nation a scam. And yeah, Maurice deserves a huge settlement for the idiotic justice system making him waste half of his life while denying him the plausibility of _habeas corpus_ every accused deserves. But even beyond the money, it makes me glad he didn't get institutionalized, kept his faith in God, and has the disposition to enjoy life as a free man. Institutionalization is a very depressing psychological phenomenon. *Yet they never broke an innocent man's spirit,* just like they couldn't break Jesus after mocking and torturing him. *Both carried their own cross with silent humble dignity.*

Most officers would care a whole lot about such a circumstance, but I just don't think a person passing away in the care of a hospice nurse is being surrounded by six cops watching them die- dying is a slow process for most that can take a few weeks, and by the time death is there, they are almost always unconscious or on heavy pain meds. Many members of the criminal justice system are notoriously stubborn when it comes to closing a case. If they feel they have the right person, they want to just move on and not think about it again, even if new evidence comes along that the person they have is innocent. I am waiting with bated breath to see the evidence against the suspect in the Delphi case. Few cases have touched me like Abby and Libby's. The only other one in recent memory is the "honor" killing of the Said sisters Amina and Sarah in Texas in 2008. The frustration with that case was knowing who did it, but not being able to track him down. The fact that Libby did everything she could to bring her and Abby's murderer to justice, yet they couldn't identify him for so long was equally devastating. Omg. This is how I found out about the Delphi update. I was listening to this while doing my makeup and started bawling my eyes out. I really hope they've finally got him. I've always prayed their case would be solved in my lifetime. Those sweet girls deserve nothing but peace 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
I've always been fascinated by the Tamam Shud case, specifically because of the name found on the tie. T Keane are my initials, along with my grandfather and great grandfather's. We all live in Australia (Queensland) too. I'm glad to hear that this man was identified and the biggest mystery about who he is was solved!
Wow I remember you covering the first two cases and never thinking they'd ever be solved. But here we are. Gives me hope that even some of the most cryptic cases can be solved eventually. Thanks Lazy for coming back to these and giving us updates
I'm glad Maurice's mother got to see that her son was innocent. It makes me so mad when the DA are so stubborn are refuse to imagine that they got it wrong. Getting DNA tested should have been done as soon as it was able to be. It's like withholding evidence.
Happy but at the same time sad for the man from the last story...imagine spending half your life in prison for the crime you never committed. How many innocent people like that have been locked up and even died in prison, while actual monsters are roaming free enjoying their lives? Infuriating!
I’m so glad they seem to have found the person in the Delphi case. These families need it. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, it’s not “solved”. We’re just getting started. 🤞🏻 I hope this is the right person and they have everything they need to nail him to the wall!! Love u Lazy, keep ‘em coming 👊
But have they? He's already guilty in the court of public opinion, but hasn't had a trial. People are calling for him to be murdered in prison, that's sickening.
@@TheRoadhammer379 yes that is truly disgusting. And I’m not sure if he’s the guy which is why I said “seem to have found the guy”. Who knows. It will probably take years for this to even go to court. There are RUclipsrs making videos saying the Delphi case has been solved and I’m like really? Not it’s not. Not yet
The Somerton Beach Man case is a classic case of Occam's Razor, the simplest explanation was the one that made the most sense, for decades, people were creating theories about secret messages and spies, but no, there was a simple answer all along.
All I can say is that your voice and the background music sends shivers down my spine. I feel like I’m being watched whenever I listen to these videos, and I feel like I’m hearing things I’m not supposed to hear.
Isn't it strange that all these mysteries just happened to be solved in these past few months? The lady of the dunes was just solved a few days ago too...😲
That Delphi one always really bothered me since there was some footage of the guy. I really hope that they got him and make the charges stick. Can’t wait to see the evidence against him.
That video doesn't prove anything. There was an older man that everyone was absolutely convinced it was him. The walk matches! The voice matches! Arrest him! He passed away and people were convinced he got away with murder. Now everyone says the same exact thing about this man and that video. You absolutely cannot tell who it is, and honestly, because of that, I highly doubt it can be used as evidence against anyone because it can literally be anyone.
@@frasert8779 My point was specifically about that footage. You were bothered because they had it and presumably couldn't get someone with it? That's all I was pointing out, the footage can be anyone, it can't pinpoint anyone.
@@ApohMay Ah I see, yeah I didn’t mean to imply they should be able to use the footage. I was meaning to highlight how disturbing it is that we have the guy on footage but can’t use it because it’s so grainy, which makes it all the more frustrating. I was not clear so I can see why you took it that way
Oh my God, the Delphi murders, finally. THANK YOU for this update, Lazy, I'm so happy those poor girls are finally getting justice. And this must be some small comfort to their families.
You're the first major true crime-esque RUclips that I watch that has spoken about the Delphi arrest. He really was HIPS. But now that you can see his face, those sketches are him. He never even moved out of the area. But they couldn't get him until now. I'm so glad they had the wherewithal to get that video and audio evidence.
I'm so happy to know there is promising progress with the Delphi Murders. I'm so shocked that all of my crime channels haven't exploded with this. Thank you for sharing the info you have!!!
jesus man, so many popular cases being covered in one video... I never though the somerton beach man would ever end up solved. Thanks lazy for covering these. Made my whole year to see these ended up being solved.
I remember first watching your videos 5 years ago when you made stalker stories, skin-walker stories etc. I stopped watching your videos a year ago due to having watched all of your vids so there was nothing more to watch. I’m so glad I’ve come back to catch up on all the new content. Love the direction you’re going in.
The fact that I'm alive for Delphi to be solved gives me chills. It seems like so long and only just yesterday I remember hearing the breaking news of missing girls and then horribly just hours later that their bodies were found. I remember the weather that day in my area. I remember thinking as years passed that this might be another case of "we have a still image of the suspect but that's all we'll ever see of them." I'm so so relieved and happy they finally have someone. I hope the show a bunch of evidence in his trial. You can tell the detectives took this personally and think of Libby and Abby as their own children that were taken too soon. This entire case breaks my heart all over again, but I'm thankful the families will start to be able to have closure.
Wow.... as someone who has seen their case, and the haunting last snap video, it is such a relief that they found the a suspect. I hope they brings the families a little bit of closure. Maybe the sweet baby girls would finally rest in peace ❤️😔
Lazy! Thank you so much for updating us on these stories. I had it set in my head that we would never figure out the first two stories. Sometimes I go back and listen to your old videos and be so perplexed everytime those two stories would play. I finally have some closure and I'm glad to know the families of the deceased have closure too.
i’m so happy that the delphi case finally seems to have a solution. i cannot imagine how the families felt, or even the town, not having closure for so many years. rest in piece, liberty and abigail. i hope justice is served for you. ❤️
I remember hearing the update on the Delphi case on the news last week and I almost lost my mind. I'm so happy the family is finally seeing progress in this case!
I'm so happy that there's finally an update on Libby and Abby. They were only a year older than me at the time and as I've grown up I can't help but think about my achievements and how they should be getting to the same places in life as me. It's scary
I'm so happy that these girls finally got justice. I've known of this case for years. And it is so heartbreaking. But finally finally these girls can rest in peace, and their families get justice for their girls.
Saw a lot of people (in comment sections elsewhere) saying Libby taking video and audio of the suspect wasn't brave or smart because since they watch true crime stories on RUclips they would have done this or that to avoid being murdered. Like they would know as a kid what to do. Her actions made this case impossible to forget and talking about child victims as if somehow their actions led to them being murdered like when you were a kid you were never vulnerable is ridiculous. I'm glad they got this guy and I'm sure the other inmates will know who he is and what he has done.

The story about the Somerton Beach Man ended up being kind of sad. A man who loved culture, with a broken marriage, practically no friends, and who probably committed suicide on a beach somewhere in Australia. What an unhappy story.

Gotta love the legal system amirite
Wouldn't be surprised if the police didn't release the name of the real killer because it was a white guy and they don't want the racial question brought into it.
@@ludameri1384 yeah our system is crap right now and there needs to be change.
Maurice was done fucking dirty. It’s infuriating.
Agreed. What I was thinking. Those stories suck so bad where an innocent person rots in jail for decades.
@@Blalack77 Innocent people have no doubt been summarily executed. Sad. I'd be so bitter...
I know right? That's up there with the most mysterious of any historical mysteries, absolutely wild that it's been just ... solved.
Sometimes it's best to go back to basics, and that's what solved the case. Just do a DNA test on the man.

@@toreadoress Even that number, is reportedly likely to be 3x higher at 12%.
If he is the one I hope he rots in hell.
And hopefully he's the correct person this time.
Maurice looks like such a gentle soul. 38 years locked away, and he still doesn't outwardly blame anyone for it; he's just happy to be out :)
@@MrJest2 I'm under the belief that the death penalty should be reserved for the worst of the worst, and that it should not even be considered unless there is actually substantial, irrefutable evidence to back up the charges.

Teach them self defense. Give them weapons (if they are old enough) for example, a pocket knife, teach them how to use it.

The idea of the Taman Shud case being solved is insane!
And then to hear that his life was actually quite depressing...makes me feel really sad for him.
@@elsupremeo 100%. Things are often not as intriguing as we make them out to be, but this case fascinated so many of us for so long it's so surreal to be faced with these potential facts.
Solved! Or has it been?
There is still some questions in my mind:
o. Why were the tags cut out of his clothing?
o. Why was the "Tamam shud" quote sewn into the lining of the man's coat where it was unlikely to be found?
o. Why did the woman "Jo" seem to have known the guy?
o. Why did this video not mention later statements from Jo's daughter revealing that Jo did indeed know the Somerton man?
o. Is the evidence that determined that Jo's son is not related to the Somerton man correct? I am not a geneticist, so it is only my opinion that if Jo knew the Somerton man, and her son expressed the same rare genetic characteristics; that seems unlikely to be a mere coincidence.
Nevertheless, it would be great if the case is actually solved.
@@barrybrevik9178 The best thing we can solve is his identity. It’s best to give people’s identity back to their corpses after such tragic disappearances. Delphi murders case always bothered me so much. First of all thinking of how scared those poor girls must have been to cause them to film and record the suspect (and how smart that was of them). It was always so creepy that they had the video and voice recording of the guy and it was still unsolved.
To me they didn’t want to solve it bc they probably know there’s lots of this going on in their town. Cops are probably assaulting people too. Someone mentioned they discovered more creeps in the area when looking for suspects. I don’t think they were in a rush to solve this bc a lot of cops abuse their power and SA women/girls. They’d be afraid of uncovering any of that up.
No way, Abby and Libby's case has finally been solved?! That's fantastic news!

His dumb lawyer should give him back his money too.
I don’t understand how it is even legal for them not to do that. I have heard of cases where people confess to crimes on their deathbeds, but the cops didn’t do anything because they “already had a guy” sitting in prison for something that somebody else freaking did. There is nothing in the world that makes me angrier
@@sabrinatscha2554 Police aren't exactly responsible for the actions of the court, and maybe they can initiate pressing charges, but what you described would be really hard to open a case for. I don't think it would be an officer's actual job in this scenario. Not dramatically holding the hand of their wife and loudly confessing to crimes?
Omg the case of Maurice Hastings brought me to tears. His mother dying just 4 months before he was released from the prison sentence that lasted as long as I have been alive for a crime he didn't commit is just awful. I hope he's having the best life he can now that he has been exonerated.
the opening piano of this channel has always been strangely soothing
Maurice isn't the only one whose request has been denied like that - I've already heard it a couple of times that someone in prison asked for a DNA test or other sorts of investigation but it was denied. And it seriously makes me question why. Seems to me as if they are so desperate never to admit that they have wrongfully convicted someone that they would rather let an innocent person rot away in prison forever than do any more steps to make absolutely sure.
Many members of the criminal justice system are notoriously stubborn when it comes to closing a case. If they feel they have the right person, they want to just move on and not think about it again, even if new evidence comes along that the person they have is innocent.
They don't want justice, they want a conviction
Law enforcement have such a frail ego that no matter how wrong they are, they never admit wrongdoing and only in extremely rare instances admit any degree of fallibility

they always get denied cause the incompetent cops are lazy fat bastards who dont wanna do their jobs dont actually care about justice and dont wanna admit when they've got it wrong.

Man, I remember Lazy’s coverage on the Somerton Beach Man. It was one of the most intriguing mysteries (and one of my favorites) he had covered, and I would’ve never figured that it could be solved with how convoluted it was. Nothing short of a tragic tale after hearing it being broken down. Rest easy, Charles.
I feel such a strong connection to this story and have no idea why.
When the Case of Abby and Libby was still Cold, I never ceased to comment on vids about it that people were crazy to see a young man in the blurred footage of the male on the bridge. And the voice recording as well spoke of someone older, around fifties. Glad the police didn't get biased by that updated sketch and looked in the right direction.
Literally, even the body type and movements of the individual indicated that he was old. That sketch was so off the mark
I also thought he was at his earliest in his mid to late 30s, thought he was probably older tho which, to be fair, depending on the person and their health, can look like anywhere from 35-55 haha.

Be praying for Delphi as they move on, and may Abby and Libby never be forgotten.
Always satisfying to see unsolved cases being finally solved or almost being solved
I am so, so hopeful that like the Said sisters, the vile creature that took these girls' lives will finally be put away.
Props for spelling "bated" correctly 🙂
@@tekbarrier Haha, thanks! I actually meant to check that that spelling was correct, but totally forgot. I'm glad my brain subconsciously got it right!
I am going to wager that the evidence is slim, circumstantial at best. The police strategy is clear... Try this guy in the court of public opinion and he will be found guilty regardless of the weakest evidence.
@@TheRoadhammer379 I don't think that's fair to say this early. They haven't released what evidence they do have, so it's really impossible for us to say whether the case is strong or very flimsy.

Now that I have more information, I believe it even more. Being a poet, getting suited up, laying on the beach, words from a poem tome stitched in a secret pocket, sounds like he was prepared, maybe he bet one last time on horses and lost.

That video doesn't prove anything. There was an older man that everyone was absolutely convinced it was him. The walk matches! The voice matches! Arrest him! He passed away and people were convinced he got away with murder. Now everyone says the same exact thing about this man and that video. Saw a lot of people (in comment sections elsewhere) saying Libby taking video and audio of the suspect wasn't brave or smart because since they watch true crime stories on RUclips they would have done this or that to avoid being murdered.
