While on tour in Madrid, Christian McBride's "A" string on his bass broke less than a minute into the first set of the night. (And he played the entire first set on three strings!) The following footage is what ensued backstage right after the Trio got off stage during intermission, where they worked on finding a replacement bass string within 20 minutes!

I was there. I saw it snap. And it was still one of the best Chick Corea shows I've ever seen. You literally could not tell musically that anything was different. And this trio was operating on a level I haven't seen live in a very long time. CM is just the coolest, calmest, and baddest dude there is.
What date is this footage from? Did this coincide with you being on tour with Bob Reyolds?
MrHestichs yes it did
Got tickets for the show in Amsterdam since the day they started selling. Man, I was really sad when the show got cancelled. I really hope there's going to be another chance soon.
Playing tunes of that difficulty with three strings on the fly shows how truly fluent McBride is at the bass. Inspiring stuff!
Wow, what a great story! And what an exceptional resilience Mr. McBride showed here, truly professional! We’re so lucky we live in these digital times. These kind of stories used to be shared by word of mouth but these days we can actually be part of it. So sorry that your show in Utrecht was canceled due to the Corona crisis, hopefully you and your trio will be able to visit us soon! Stay well.
I admire his confidence so much. “It doesn’t matter” - I hope to have that attitude one day.
I would like to see more backstage things!! Cool 👑
I saw Larry Grenadier lose a bass string playing with the Pat Metheny Trio in England. He changed the string on stage while Pat did an impromptu solo acoustic set to keep the gig going.
This is a lesson for all strings and guitars players: keep a set of well used strings in your case or gig bag🎺🎻🎷🎹🎙️🌎💥💰
Exactly! Even more when you are a to notch bassist… I can’t believe Mcbride travel without a extra set and his bag….
And thats why Chick plays with him, one of best around.
An incredible story! Professional musician at work!!!
saw him do the exact same thing in 2015! A string broke on the 1st tune!! have D'addario get you a backup set with that endorsement, bro!!! or stop being such a beast lol
Haha this was great! I would love to see more backstage shenanigans.
Love this!
Incredible!
THANKS Chick!!!
The great Jorge Pardo, for god sake! Plus... shouldn't they always bring a set of strings just in case?
MrPaulOfield yeah you think he would be on top of that
@@samflegal6341 Yeah, you'd think so, right? So unprofessional. :-)
@@ChristianMcBrideTV outstanding ability anyway! Playing all the gig without a string!
Christian McBride and Chick Corea are two of my very favorite musicians great video it just goes to show you! Great musicians can quickly adapt! And Christian McBride is a great double bassist! :-)
I agree with all you say but FFS why hasn't he got a spare set of strings.
@@johnwilson1997 sometimes one can only travel with certain weight ...could be an airline rule (pesky rules) Or he was playing with a replacement. True talent. Yup.
Holy cow!!! You just described one of my nightmares...
Fun watch. Very surprised he didn't have a spare set with him 😅
Not much use at the start of a concert which is under way!
@@martinheath5947 I agree - talk about bad luck! And of course, they just made an honest mistake that we all can learn from. Almost made me nervous watching them look for that string! :D
@@TheodorOnarheim Also a brand new string would stand out from the played in stringd and not in a good way! How stressful but what a test of musicianship. This guy is phenomenal
excellent clip my bro .you should have more subs :))
I don’t think Mr McBride will be doing that again.....as a semi pro bass player I carry 3 sets of strings (overkill) spare straps ,spare leads ,batteries and even a Markbass mini spare head in my gig bag pocket.
But in fairness it’s probably the first time this has happened to him those strings are hard to break, maybe his technique is so strong now digging in can cause those thick guys to snap.😮
Pure Geniuses with mighty love " )
PeaceR
I love Christian's powerful tone, he's a hard hitter. I wonder if Mingus broke a lot of strings too?
I saw Chick a few times at Monterey Jazz......huge loss in the music world.....RIP.....
Sir Ur great.🙏
What a loud bass when the string was replaced.
Yes sir!!
uhh the great Mr. Bernie Kirsch !!!! Sound Enginner!
Nice
You caught me smiling...
They slick
Apparently it's a habit of his, I saw Christian break the A or E string of the bass he was borrowing form a graduate student at the UNC Jazz Fest in Greeley, CO...
Is there video of him breaking the string ?
New song. Christian's got a string.
"Christian Didn't break his G-String"
😍😍😍😍😍😍
A弦切るピッキング、、それにしてもワンセットA弦無しでやるとか凄すぎる
I did not believe one can break a double bass string (they are like bridge cables!). But if someone can do it, then that must be Chris McBride!
🎸👍
What no spares?!
wwoo Thats Pacos old friends hangin around. Did they play?
Jorge Pardo. He is on Chick's "Ultimate Adventure" album and dvd.
Not sure about that night ,though
I saw Stanley Clarke accidentally drop his double bass from the stage to the floor in Edinburgh in the 70's
((Bill Connor on guitar).
Oh a travesty!!! If my double bass (ca 1820) got hurt, i would go nuts.
@@bagpipegnat mate you only wrote that comment to flex about your instrument, and I aint even mad holy molly nice bass man!
@@ivangushkov3651 not your mate. You missed the point and read something into my chagrin that wasn't even there.
@@bagpipegnat OK bud.
Does a plumber go to work without a plunger?
Christian McBride was never a Boy Scout! He would have been prepared. Always have extra strings!
he doesnt carry a spare set of strings??
That's incredible for a pro
That's what I was thinking - I find that amazing that he doesn't have a complete set of string with him all the time.
i might be wrong but i don't think that double bass string are that easy to broke. i've been playing electric bass for more than 5 year and i never broke a string ( and i'm a slapper too). so i would imagine that double bass string are even harder to break. (i don't play double bass so correct me if i'm wrong ).
Champ they definitely take a lot longer but I’m confused how you haven’t ever broken a string that’s insane
@@mileshubler6832 yeah, i don't know, maybe its because i only play on elixir string. i have them on both my bass and guitar and they just never broke. and trust me, i didn't go easy on them.
Always. Carry. An extra. Set.
It doesn’t weigh as much as not having it when you need it
This is why musicians have backline technicians .... apparently not in jazz though. :-D
He broke a string and doesn't have backup set? I thought the pros carried back equipment! No bass tech like rock musicians have?
Quien chucha dio dislike a este vídeo
Poor Chick looks really peeved....where are your spare strings man!
F
Lol
What professional bassist doesnt bring or have access to another bass. Why bother changing a string just use another bass.
Id guess rock musicians have it good... technicians would just hand off to them another tuned bass. No issues. No problem. Just the norm.
Not to dose this with vitriol but this seems surprisingly amateur... No?
Christian's upright bass likely costs upwards of 10,000 and it is much, much rarer for an upright bass string to snap unexpectedly than an electric bass or guitar string. Touring with two upright basses is also more difficult than touring with even 5 electric ones, I'd say. The size and level of care required between the instruments isn't really comparable.
Different worlds man. In the rock world- you go out on a set of tour dates out of a bus(or with bus support) with a dedicated tech. For the jazz population - you very typically fly out for a specific date with no tech and either rent a instrument(which assuming they were in Spain, is what happened) or fly with your personal instrument in a flight case. In either of those cases, space is always at a premium and so things like strings are often a afterthought. Just a case of differing expectations

You also have to realize strings drum sticks drum heads reeds etc are consumables and don't really take up much space... multi tools etc
Unprofessional not always having ones handy
