Dan Lampinski recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978. His earliest recordings were made with an internal microphone deck, and though they are somewhat lo-fi compared to his later work, some very great moments in rock history were captured for posterity. In late 1974 he bought a Sony TC-152SD tape recorder, a Sony ECM-99 stereo microphone, and began using Maxell cassettes. He was also fortunate enough to have a friend who provided excellent taping seats for many shows, resulting in high quality recordings. In 1977, he switched over to a Nakamichi 550 tape recorder, two Nakamichi CM-300 microphones, and continued using Maxell cassettes.
He recorded many of the major 70's bands: Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kiss, Black Sabbath, The Who, Al Stewart, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck, Bruce Springsteen, Supertramp, Jean-Luc Ponty, Moody Blues, Neil Young, The Faces, Rush, Rick Wakeman, Kansas, as well as several "under the radar" acts.
Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated. Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes. No EQ'ing has been done to any of the transfers. Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original recording.
Dan was very meticulous about taking good care of his tapes and is very pleased that these recordings will now circulate among the trading community. Please honour his kindness and generosity by sharing these recordings freely.

Incredible! Thanks SO MUCH for this.
My sister Patty took me to see this when it first came to Long Island in 1971, the same year that the Allman Brothers released their Fillmore East album with the venerable "Whipping Post". So, when I hear WP I think back to the graphic scene orchestrated by Mel Gibson in "The Passion of Christ where they're whipping the tar out of JC and that channels me back to the 40 lashes scene as this 12 year old witnesses at the Westbury Music Fair on Long Island. How's that for a Palm Sunday recollection?
Interessant
Opera Straordinaria!!!❤
I believe that is Paul Ainsley as Herod. He also played the role on Broadway and in many latter-day revivals. What a sweet, wonderful man, much missed by all of his friends!
Yes that is indeed one of the few cast members we were able to identify, the other two are Tom Westerman as Jesus and Kurt Yaghjian (who played Annas in the 1973 movie) as Judas.

It's most likely this, but with Tom Westerman as Jesus.
Anyone know what type of character Harod was playing. I have seen him as Elvis. as a partially nude leather bear, a game show host, I can not remember the others.
Seeing that it's Paul Ainsley, he probably did the drag queen style like on Broadway.
@@tristanbray2184Drag Queen Herod is my favorite!
Shit...I forgot I recorded this.
So is the score of the production pretty much a replica of the arrangements of the 1971 Broadway production? Because if it is this is pretty much the closest thing I'll get to hearing the full Broadway score
I guess you can say that, yes. There are differences in arrangements of course but it's likely pretty close.
Are there any pictures available for this tour?
Unfortunately not, I have seen a couple of newspaper clippings that have a few photo's but the quality often isn't very good and most haven't been scanned yet. We are working on a new section of our website that might include them in the future though. For now you could check out our image gallery: www.jesuschristsuperstarzone.com/image-gallery/
Could you please tell me what are the casts for this version? I wanna know if Colm in it or not:)
lorschach Who Kurt Yahjian who played Annas in the movie is Judas iscariot in this one
This is an American production. Colm Wilkinson is not in it.
Oh dear. The pitch on this recording is wrong! Overtime many recordings go sharp or flat depending on a myriad of reasons . This is something I’m an expert on. :) Half a step sharp in most cases, sometimes more, sometimes less. I wonder if the tempo was altered as well? It’s SO fast and I find it hard to believe that they performed it like that.
very fast
The tempo in this production was fast, but not this fast. Tape can sometimes speed recordings up over time. Like think about it- This tape is like 50 years old now.
Yikes! Slow down! And who's singing the part Jesus, Ethel Merman?
Is that yvonne elliman as mary magdalene
Probably not.
Kurt Yaghjian's laughter in Judas' Death is so creepy… he's really lost it by that point. Tom Westerman is very good with the notes he hits but he has the same problem that Ted Neeley has for me, he sounds a bit like a duck a certain bits. I know that's a bizarre thing to say.
Caiaphas sounds like Bob Bingham
No Bob Bingham is much deeper and gravellier (if that is a word). I found a cast list that suggests it may be Walter Charles from the original cast of Annie, but I'm not sure how accurate that is.
I saw something saying Caiaphas was Peter Schlosser, u/s from Broadway.
And that Annas was Steve Schochet, from the 1977 revival.
terrible Pilate LOL
every singer sounds the same. weird.
joey Leverton what do you mean?
+Anais Amaya What I mean is every singer sings in the same register.
That's owing to the tape being slightly sped up when the recording was processed from tape to digital, which sometimes happens. Slow it down by about 5 to 8%, and it would sound closer to the reality, with the singers less similar to each other in register.
This is amazing! I'm actually listening to a 1970s JCS show, let alone one that's high quality. I really hope there are more recordings out there--I'd love to hear the OBC and London live. And Kurt Yaghjian rocks it as Judas... the movie definitely didn't show off his full ability.
I saw Kurt as Judas in Dayton, Ohio in 1975. He got a Standing Ovation and it's obvious why! I never thought I'd hear this again!
Omg I'm impressed by Kurt's job as Judas!
I mean, he's already awesome as Annas, one of the best actually
But just, woah, he's pretty good at portraying Judas too, especially in "Damned for all time/Blood money", he left me open-mouthed
Yeah, Kurt's Judas had soul. :)
thank you very very much!!! I really wanted to listen to the version when Kurt played Judas!
I thought I would never find a recording of these :')
1:24:02 Mary's anguish cries just hurts my heart 😭😢
Yes. That "NO!!!" made me broke the heart.
Its true that musical theater is inspired by many fans all around the world
This sounds so much like the original broadway score
This is such a fantastic recording. Really strong production. Does anyone know of a recording out there featuring Bruce Scott or Kim Milford (RHS Roxy Cast)??
Hey Sean, sorry I don't know of any JCS recording with either Bruce Scott or Kim Milford unfortunately.
Hopefully one will surface at some point. As far as I'm concerned, their voices were right up there with Neeley's.
"But to let her stroke you, kiss your hair" whoops...
That part is wrong. The original lyrics is "But to let her kiss you, stroke your hair..."
People tend to mess that up, I think either “choice” works.
Awesome show I had the record with the original cast love this
This whole cast is brilliant. Wow.
Casting Kurt was genius......
Fabulous thankyou :)
There was a production that included Tom Westerman and Kurt Yaghjian as Jesus, I believe that Judy Kaye played Mary and Walter Charles was Caiaphas. But I couldn't say for certain if this is the same.
Thanks for the information!
Here's the link: ovrtur.com/production/2897191Tom Westerman is in the chorus so he may have been an understudy or a replacement later down the line. Doesn't match with the theory Paul Ainsley as Herod though.
I can say with 99% certainty that this is not Judy Kaye in this recording. Would love to hear her version.
Barry dennen as pilate possibly
Not the case.
Oops. Hit send too soon. I’m going to fix the pitch. This is why the singers all sound high pitched and similar to each other.
Kurt Yahjian is Annas in the movie.
great! thanks!
Was the show actually in this key, or has it been altered? It seems really high.
When the recording was processed from tape to digital, it got sped up. That sometimes happens owing to the process. It is slightly faster, but was not nearly as fast live as heard here. Slow it down by about 5 to 8%, and it would sound closer to the reality.
Awesome show loved it
Ted neeley could have been an understudy for jesus
Not in this production.
My great uncle Tom played Jesus in this cast and this recording. :)
You'll have to ask him to share a few stories for us (:
