In this tutorial, I explain how to make an origami butterfly (designed by Akira Yoshizawa) out of a sheet of printer paper. We must first make the paper square, and then go on to make what is known as the "Water Bomb Base" or "Paper Balloon Base".
After that, we will go on to make the wings and head of the butterfly, finally folding it into the final shape.

Unfortunately, my butterfly looks like the airwing out of Starfox and less like a butterfly. It's a pretty good looking airwing, though.

I made 1500 of these butterflies for my girlfriend. I learned how to make them from this video. I had bought 6 copies of her favorite book and tore the pages out to make them. lucky to say. this video is the reason I'm engaged now.

Wow... back in 1992 I use to do try to make paper origamis using a black and white pocketbook with blurred illustrations, I was 12 years old that time. Im so glad we can easily youtube this now. Thanks for this post.... THANK YOUUUUU!

Hey Rob, thanks for taking the practical decision of using regular printer paper! I am a beginner in origami.. and here in my home country, origami paper is not regularly available. Mine turned out like yours. Great job explaining. However, I would pause each step, which gave me time to make the creases. Thank you. I will probably do this again about 5 or 6 times till I can remember.
