    Seat belts are designed so that your body can lean forwards a bit in a crash so that your head can dig into that airbag. Harness restrains your body movement in a crash, but your head is free to move, which means your neck can snap before your face touches the airbag (if it ever does). Wear a helmet and HANS if you ever want to use harness for safety.

  • @Lippy7
    @Lippy7 5 лет назад +56

    If you attach the bottom part of the harness to the bottom of your seat or below you in general the pressure will snap your spine in half if you crash

    • @solaraproject3614
      @solaraproject3614 5 лет назад +3

      thats correct, it'll force your body downwards due to the angle of the harness. but this one isnt as bad as some i have seen, some has literally installed it at the back of the driver side seat and not at the rear passenger seats.

  • @sirfrancischl
    @sirfrancischl 6 лет назад +25

    This is kinda wrong. You MUST put a bar in the backseats that are separated from the bolts you just screw to the chassis. The correct method is to custom make a bar that is welded to the chassis. The bolts may lossen up during time and cause the belt to lose all tension and cause injuries when in a situation. Just be careful and do it not for "look" reasons...if you are going to do it, do it the way it is intended. Cheers!

    Counterfeit Takatas, not SFI rated, tests done by Takata on the Tanaka knockoffs showed that the harness snapped and the dummy went flying through the windshield, installed the way you installed them the stock 3 points are far safer.
    Look, I love the WRX, I love racing, I don’t have a lot of money, and think that how a car looks is very important, but you guys are only a step or two up from ricers. I’m not saying this to hate, I’m saying this because you guys are going to get yourselves and/or others seriously injured or killed. If you can’t afford to spend 150-250 bucks on a Takata or Sparco or Braum harness that’s fine, but don’t buy the knockoff version of whichever brand you wanted to try and look cool. I personally use a Racequip harness I acquired for a very reasonable 50 bucks (new) on eBay. Racequip is a very well known, very affordable, SFI rated brand. Sure it’s not the “coolest,” but it’s respected as a budget brand and it’s proven to be safe. You don’t have to spend a fortune to look cool, just be smart about it a make sure not to sacrifice the safety of yourself and others in order to do so, cheers.

    • @WCKDStreetMedia

      Zach Wise due to the bolts being longer that install in the pre existing holes, and the overall coverage of the four point harness is a greater area than the stock three point, they actually are safer, and being that they are adjustable, you can calibrate where you want them to rest on your body. Makes no sense that a three point would be safer guys, just saying. But thanks for the comment

      No they are not SFI approved. Actually I saw on Takata's website, they said that these fake/counterfeit/replica harnesses are extremely dangerous and should not ever be put in a car, sold, or resold. I saw a video of Takata crash testing these fake/counterfeit/replica harnesses and what happened was the harness broke and the crash test dummy went flying forward right out of the seat. Real Takata harnesses are really good quality harnesses.

    • @antus666
      @antus666 6 лет назад +1

      The genuine ones which carry the SFI tag have been found to be non-compliant also. Im shopping for belts and the moment and recall seeing the detail at the confederation of australian motorsport page here: www.cams.com.au/media/news/latest-news/urgent-recall-sfi-161-tanakaruian-dragon-safety-harness The SFI should have it documented too. It looks like this one is one of the affected ones with the cam lock.

      Usually after a harness/cage install the owner does not have much use for the back seat unless your passenger was to twist like a pretzel getting in and lay flat on the seats. I say 'usually' because there are some rare cases like in an Evo where there is still _some_ space left but in the event of a sudden stop your passenger(s)' mouth(s) will likely make contact with the steel... and make the Tooth Fairy very happy.

    this is the stupidest thing you can do, mount a 4 or 6 point harness in a car without rollbar!!!

    • @WCKDStreetMedia
      @WCKDStreetMedia  7 лет назад +4

      panos75 you don't need a roll cage for a harness, could use a harness bar if you want but 90% of cars out there don't have a roll cage just cause there's a harness

    • @panos75
      @panos75 7 лет назад +1

      the thing is that they are more dangerous in an accident! if you find yourself upside down and are strapped with the 4point harness ,say bgoodbye to your head!

    • @panos75
      @panos75 7 лет назад +9

      4-point harnesses, 5-point harnesses, racing harnesses, or other non-stock type seatbelts are made to hold a driver in place during extreme driving situations as exist on the race track or autocross course, so that he doesn't have to use his strength to keep himself from sliding around, and can instead concentrate on driving.
      They are also made to keep the driver safe in the event of an accident in a vehicle that is equipped with a rollcage. The driver's torso is kept mostly in one place by the harnesses (they do stretch a little bit normally and during an accident). This attempts to keep the drivers (helmet-clad) head from banging too hard against the "not-going-to-deflect-much-when-hit-by-a-head" rollcage. It also performs a number of other safety duties as well.
      As far as safety is concerned, rollcages are made mostly for one thing, and that is, keeping the person inside the vehicle from being crushed. In racing vehicles, they stiffen up the chassis, improving handling, yadda, yadda.. that's not the point of this.. We're talking about safety here. When a vehicle gets in an accident, the rollcage (which is usually bolted or welded to the floor of the vehicle in some manner, will do its best to absorb some of the energy and prevent the foreign object (another race car, tire wall, whatever) from entering the vehicle and harming the person inside. It sometimes does a good job of this, but it doesn't offer as much safety as you would think. However, when a vehicle rolls, rollcages (if properly designed and installed) SHOULD prevent the vehicle's roof and other parts from collapsing in and crushing the occupant(s). This is where 5-point harnesses step in, and prevent the person from flying around and hitting random parts of the vehicle as the vehicle goes from shiny-side-up, to shiny-side-down, to shiny-side-sideways, to other random configurations of the "shiny side" (otherwise known as the "top" of the vehicle).
      Street cars are a whole other story. When street cars get in accidents, there is not a rollcage to protect the occupants from being crushed inside. This is where the stock seatbelts shine. Since there is no hard metal rollcage to contact (usually a few inches from the drivers head), the passenger can move a little bit more inside the cabin. In event of a rollover, stock seatbelts allow the passenger(s) to slide sideways and "lower their profile" so that the collapsing roof doesn't squish them. If a person were to have 5-point harnesses (or their equivalent) in the vehicle, the harness would hold their torso up so that only their head could move (and in a very limited manner). When the roof comes collapsing down, the occupant(s) torsos are held stiffly upright, and the roof causes either a broken neck, crushed vertebrae, snapped nerves, broken back, paralyzation, or any other range of rather nasty things we don't want to happen to us.

    • @CantilEdge

      panos75 very useful information, I will now install a roll-cage in my car.

    • @frenchieblack1
      @frenchieblack1 7 лет назад +2

      Their angle with the back harnesses are within 45 degrees and not floor mounted which is acceptable although not optimal. But, without a HANS device the harness and the roll cage are also still not enough. I just wouldn't plan on doing any truly spirited driving that could potentially have you end over end. The harnesses will keep you planted for backroad carving and will work great in less egregious accident situations. I would still defer to the standard three point seatbelt for day to day use.
