      ABS its a personal preference. The bike is pretty light and doesn't need ABS IMO. When you're over 500lbs in machine ABS can be useful,again IMO. GOOD LUCK!

    • @RodRidesWrenches
      @RodRidesWrenches  2 года назад +1

      Actually, this is exactly the point. The bike needed a new clutch, with BMW's this is expensive in parts and time consuming in labour compared to the Fz6 I'm working on now. But would you throw away a perfectly good car if it needed a clutch? Society bias motorcycles as something with a short life span. Yet when you go out for a ride you'll routinely see bikes that are 20 years old. As for the cost.. Very few vehicles cars/trucks/motorcycles/boats appreciate in value and in a throw away society we have been trained to look at only the material values. That's why insurance companies would rather write you a lowball cheque than fix your bike. 1 clutch and the bike runs and operates like its new, does the clutch add value? No. You expect the bike to have a functioning clutch in it and if its worth it to the owner it can be done with an investment of either money or time or in my case a bit of both. I also say that I would rather own a high mileage bike in good condition (which the BMW is) over a low mileage POS. Sorry for getting preachy but it is Sunday... Ride Safe!

      @mmm4638 2 года назад

      If you can trailbrake no it'll annoy you means you have a feel to beat abs with feeling tires and temp according to conditions. If not a trail braker and may ride in ice cold temp wet in downhills get abs.

      1999 5th gen is better. Gear driven trimming is awesome. With mods and power commander will blow 6th gen away and heaps more reliable. Have done 130000 kms and no problems..All original. Hate vtec.

    1999 5th Gen is the one to get. Gear driven cams, more power, no cat, no hot wax idle to go wrong, cheaper servicing and longevity is better due to having no cam chain and tensioners. I think the styling is nicer too.

    I like the 5th gen looks because it’s subtle, soft, rounded yet still aggressive enough. It matches the VFR’s goal- to be fast and sporty yet smooth and comfortable for long rides.
    6th gens hard lines and edges remind me of the current Honda civic type R. Over styled and overly aggressive for the machine it covers.

    Great vid! I’ve owned the 3rd gen, 4th gen, 5th gen, and 6th gen and loved them all but power and acceleration-wise the 5th gen was the king. The shorter wheelbase on the 5th gen also helped it through the tighter twisties. The 6th gen was the better tourer though and my 2007 anniversary model looked phenomenal. Still, the 5th gen will always be my fave for day rides.

    I've owned a total of 8 Honda V4s over the years, including four 5th gen bikes - one 98 and three 2000 models. I had first chance at the first 2002 6th gen that came to my local dealership - rode it and absolutely hated VTECH. That particular bike also did not match the fit and finish of the 5th gens, to my eye. I prefer the styling of the 5th, but that is subjective, of course. As far as a difference in performance, even if there IS one, who cares? Not me. The 5th gen ticks all the boxes for me.

Since I have no garage to do most repairs the reliability factor was huge and I'm happy with my decision. The parts angle is very true. And forget about getting OEM fairings at this point!

    The whine of the gear driven cams with the music of the engine is what makes a beautiful VFR. The gear driven cams were a response to previous cam chain reliability issues prior to 1986, and its absurd that they went back to chains in 2022 only to have issues once again. Both nice bikes, but I would prefer a 5th gen in great shape.

    Thanks for the video! I bought a 1999 model in yellow this past spring. I loved the colour and the gear driven cam sound. After replacing the voltage r/r, testing the stator output and adding CNC bar risers, I was good to go. Put a couple thousand miles on over the summer. Thrilled with the quickness and smooth acceleration of the bike. The temperature readings during summer city riding concerned me having come from the motocross where you don't slow down. Wired in a manual switch to turn on the fan when I enter a city bought me some piece of mind (and slightly lower temps). Guess I will get used to it. Overall, glad I bought the 5th generation.

I will stomp 99% of peeps on faster newer bikes. As, I'd stomp you on your 6th generation. I have never ridden behind a 6th gen, but some have ridden behind me. After 40 years riding I wanted a sporty ride that would not kill my back. After 20 bikes in my past (cbr, busas, ) I no longer needed to be on a hyper bike but cruisers are not my thing. This breaks down to a personal liking. I bought a 2005 6th Gen with 17,000 miles for 5k about 6 years ago. I still just stop and stare at it after a ride admiring the lines, swingarm, under the seat pipes. I think it has aged really well. I never got into the looks of the 5th but if I found one for a good price I still might consider it. My favorite interceptor of all time was the 86 1000rr red white blue scheme. That full bodywork was stunning!

Also, our dyno testing showed the V-Tec didn't make a big increase in power. It just felt like it did. I now own a second 2001 VFR. I was riding with 2 Pro level racers during the test. I owned a 2000 5th gen in yellow and liked it for the most part. Prior to owning it, I had owned bikes with shaft or belt drive, so chain maintenance was a negative for me. I was not a fan of the 6th gen due to the complexity of the Vtec system and, early on in the 6th gen’s life span, I knew people who traded them before the valve adjustment due to the length of the procedure. My Concours14 has variable valve timing and doesn’t require extra steps for a valve adjustment. They are just buried deep in the bike. The other big issue I remember when I owned mine was that people were always wringing their hands over coolant temps. It was the first VFR to have side mounted radiators and Honda gave us a digital coolant gauge. People on the mailing lists couldn’t comprehend how the bike was ok with coolant temps over 212F. Pressurization and coolant allow higher boiling points. Nice comparison. I prefer yellow, but your white one sure is pretty.

    Hmmmh in real life the 5th gen is probably quicker, most of the time you ride between 4-6000 rpm, were the advantage for the 6th gen is only below 3.2 The 6th gen has to wait until 6.2 rpm before VTEC kicks in, by then the 5th gen is already gone. 🤣Styling, who wants a 15 year old bike that still looks like current generation of bikes, I want 20+ year old bike that has the looks of his generation, and can still kick younger bikes ass 🤣 I guess by now you already guessed I’m a proud owner of a 99 VFR Limited Anniversary Edition 🤘💪

But for an all around bike comparing fairly stock examples the 6th gen is great and has some noticable advantages. Vtec kick is a blast. Brakes and handling are more refined. Looks have grown on me over the years however I still prefer the 5rh gens look.

    Thanks for the info, I also went for the 6th generation v tec ...just bit by bit been upgrading &replacing, starting with 2rectifiers in first 8months until I read up &got the mossfett version which has been fine since...oh that was with also my second Alternator which was a bit of a blow as tha aftermarket one first of all didn’t last &cookedvoretty quick, git another one, that happened again so got money back onnnit &went for OEM part which was quiet expensive t say the least...Anyway problem solved, new tyres, chain, sprocket, brake pads (sintered etc) I the put on a full Delchevick stainless trimoval, had a bit of a nightmare getting old one off as every single bolt had seized on old one so all had to be cut &rebored etc...got a power commander5 coming & a K&N filter going in, saving up next for a Nitron R1 Monishick, was wondering what uogradebif front fork spring kit would go with this ? Any advice gratefully received, real happy with the 13000 miles I’ve done in her so far, hoping I don’t have to keep shelling out after these last suspension upgrades, Altho I know about ccts (just replaced) &valve timing every 16000 is quietva big expense but last check they were all ok.. many thanks from a happy vfr vtec 65 yr old rider from London England, all the best mate

    So disagree with the overall conclusion. I'm not gonna own a bike that has a notorious problem with cam chain tensioners. This is just a deal-breaker and game over. I absolutely love my '99 with tasteful mods.

      So you are not gonna own a bike except a 5th VFR? Most if not all bikes run cam chains, yes those on the 6th have a weakness flaw, however, there are available affordable fixes and improved aftermarket options.

    The VFR is a highly functional platform whichever iteration you choose especially if you wield your own spanners. Always worth keeping this question in mind when looking at any motorcycle with circa 100 bhp: just how quickly do you intend to ride your bike on the public road? If you can answer that quaestion sensibly, then all those older bikes such as the VFR make for absolutely fantastic value for money.

    THANKS for the informative video - though I found it strange you didn't touch on the biggest selling point for a lot of people on the 5th gen VFR - and that's the whine from the gear driven cams. I hear people love the sound of it for spirited riding but you claimed it to be incessant for longer journeys. I think styling is just much better on the 6th gen hence why I'd get it.

    I have owned several Honda V4 bikes with the 96 Magna VF750C as my first experience with the V4... I fell in love with the engine and the power on the Magna throughout the RPMs... I began reading about the possibility of removing the carburetor set-up on the Magna and fitting the VFR750 ignition system on the Magna... After alot of research and accepting I would be spinning my financial wheels on a project that may never work properly or fit in the frame without extra modifications that I wasn't willing to commit to I scrapped the idea and got a VFR750... From there I have now took ownership of a 2000 VFR800 AND I LOVE THIS BIKE AND WILL NEVER FORGET THE FEELING OF THIS BIKE COMPARED TO THE MANY I HAVE RIDDEN OVER THE YEARS. sorry about the caps but I get get excited when I think about it. 5th Gen all the way. After that the 98 VFR750 but I am not in the market for any of the 2002-2007 VTech models and with the addition of custom fairings installed to the 2000 5th gen and LED lighting and tail light mods and aftermarket parts this thing is super fly and nobody can make me think any different ever... But I'm glad this is a debate between two Honda of the same models at least so much respect for other riders and their own individual Love for their picks. It's all about the enjoyment and it's equalled among the riders in this series make and model and that's what makes it so damn respectable.. Thank you Honda and the riders that also feel the same way about these wonderful machines... LONG LIVE VFR V4 POWER

    16:04 i owned a silver 98 vfr800 for years , you didnt mention how the regulators in these bikes were an issue......
    It had a bullet proof motor and the gear driven cams sounded amazing at idle..... i rode some long distances on that bike being 1100ks a day on a couple of bike tours and i had no issues with sore back or cramping in the legs ......
    The dual control braking was another highlight put the rear brake on and 30 per cent went to the front brakes and visa versa.
    Through the twisties you could drag the rear brake which was magnificent.
    The only reason i sold it at 180 thousand ks , i was struggling to get parts for it..
    I bought 18 model harley fatbob with a stage 2 set up and its still no comparison to the vfr being 20 years its junior.

The 98 has no cats no oxygen sensors. I truly think the 98 is the one to have it’s really bullet proof.

      It's really bullet-proof because the gear-driven cam and shim-under-bucket valve adjustment motor came out of Honda's legendary RVF endurance racing motorcycle development programs. Those bikes won Suzuka 8-hour, Bol d'OR 24 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. As well as multiple IOM's in the hands of Joey Dunlop (RIP).

    I've been noticing something over the last 10 years of buying Honda's, the VTX line, and VFR line are high mileage survivors! Even 100k+ is really not an issue, what is the issue is parts availability, and I think that plays far more a role in decision making than the mileage itself.

My friends 6th gen has 2 fuel exhausts and sounded nice too just NOT as nice as the gear driven cams sound. both bikes share the engine and both have the STATOR/REG Bike Killer issue.. It's your own opinion & you're entitled to have one, but you're misinformed about CCT's & Timing chains ... all chains wear out & stretch "Fact", all CCT's wear out "Fact" ... yes I agree chains & CCT's are ongoing maintenance as you say, but you'll never have this worry with the superior 5th Gen motor, valve timing can't ever slip, cam gear drive won't ever wear out like a chain & cct will, plus you've the added complexity & expense to maintain the pointless / no performance advantage V-tec system, massive labour fees if not capable of DIY ... yes I agree in some respects, the 6th Gen does look more modern, yes the styling was yrs ahead of its time, still a cool looking bike even today ... But everyone in the know, knows the 5th Gen is the better all round bike, more sought after, handles better, lighter, more nimble in the twisties ... Yes I own a 5th Gen, no I would never own a 6th Gen for the above reasons given. 😀
