I think one of my favorite things about Deca-Dence is how the twist doesn't betray the premise. A lot of shows with early twists end up completely changing the tone or fundamental storyline. This promises a story of a young girl who thinks she can fight impossible odds to change the world, and a tired old man who once sought to do the same but is now too disillusioned to continue. The twist is huge and reframes everything, but *doesn't change any part of that*; I still feel like I got what I came here for.
I think it did, I was prepared for a "world ending" scenario shrouded in mystery like Promised Neverland, Kabaneri or Made in Abyss did. The whole Gear-simulation made by the system kinda caught me off guard in a bad way tbh :/ Glad many people enjoyed it tho! The animation is incredible!
I really hate how you can just say "his actual tragic backstory is that he was a pro gamer" when talking about Kaburagi and that you're not only correct, but that really just, sums it all up rather accurately
Question: did you enjoy most of it at first? Because the only reason i finished episode one is Natsume being best girl of the show, the rest of episode 1 was potentially interesting but nothing too crazy...until the end at least
Kisuko EV I enjoy all of it. It almost feels like a generic isekai, but has a lot of interesting concepts and compelling characters that It’s kept me interested.
Just imagine how shitty this plot twist would have been if it had happened at episode 11 instead of episode 2. This is just a masterclass in storytelling, right here.

Deca-dence only got 3 stars on Netflix, but I can tell you it was EXTREMELY UNDERRATED. It deserves a 5 star!! The plot, drawings, effects, music are all really good!!
I was honestly saddened when a lot of people immediately wrote of deca-dence after ep2, saying stuff like this show went from a 9/10 to a 0 real quick. Like WHAT?! The cinematography, characters, story structure, and all else stayed the same and just as good, all that happened was that there was a twist showing the real premise of the show, making it more inventive and unique. Since when are those two words a bad thing? I hope this video changes atleast some people's minds, even though their judgement seemed to be pretty stubborn, probably relating it to previous shows they watched and being unwilling to have an open mind.
I am definitely one of those people who wrote it off after ep2 and to defend that view really quick. I personally loved everything about the world and story before the twist in ep2 and then they changed everything about where the plot was going. I wanted to see that "this world is not what it seems" story. I didn't want it to all be laid out in ep2. It's definitely a unique story but I just don't care for it and was let down that the story didn't go where it seems to be setting up to go to so early.
@@usakenvi lol ironic, since we all watch anime, which are nothing more than japanese cartoons and yet those people are triggered by chibi and "cartoonish" characters....
I don't understand why they didn't leave it as a survival world like "Mortal Engines" but they wanted to add that touch of isekai that complicates the plot :(
Because there are a lot of people that saw the twist at the start of episode 2 and then decided it was absolutely stupid, without giving it a chance, some based solely on how pastel and bright the Cyborg side of things is.
@@r.a.3829 It's still a survival world, though? Just because they adjusted the framework doesn't remove that layer; it modifies by adding people thoroughly invested in keeping things the way they are, and using every means at their disposal to do so. So, Natsume, Kaburagi, and all the rest are still fighting to survive in this world, both against the hostile nature of the climate itself - Earth seems to have been almost wiped to before life evolved at all - and against the system that forces the status quo they're all living in.
@Yakadito Dito for me, messing up the plot and the story with this "game" and "bugs" thing when they could leave the story straight and clean, but analyzing the society that runs (and is based) on Deca-Dence would have been much more fascinating. But no, another conspiracy, another isekai :( ....
Damn, so sad Deca-Dence's MAL rating is so low. But it doesnt really matter to me who didnt dropped it after episode 2. And what I got was one of the most boldest and in my opinion original anime to have come out in a long time.
In most shows, ths sudden shift in what the world is like and what the actual stakes are would have come across as a jarring, out of nowhere twist...but this avoids that because the reveal comes in at the SECOND EPISODE, meaning it's way less jarring and works better than Franxx's attempts. Also I love how there's an actually subtle difference between the artystyles of the 'NPC world' and the world of the Cyborgs. Not only are the cyborgs more cartoonier and more colourful, but they're ALSO drawn with thicker outlines, and made to be somewhat simpler compared to the more...AOT-ish humans.
The sudden “Aliens” twist was definitely an issue for me when watching Franx or similar anime, but in Deca-Dence it was great to inform the viewer at the start that the plot was about aliens. What makes it work even better is that it shows the aliens’ perspectives and that they are complex characters rather than cookie-cutter villains for the main protag to defeat.
I straight started tearing up when Natsume was so knocked down by ableism that she was going to quit, then saw Gears with prosthetics and was inspired to join. Some disabilities are about society refusing to accommodate you, rather than them being disabling in and of themselves. It was so nice to see that in media. There are so many little touches - like her room having bandages to protect her stump, to Kaburagi helping her with a new arm...You never usually see disabled people in anime without them being a walking tragedy. It's nice to see such a positive and realistic example.
Honestly I would recommend people not even watch this video, some of the footage he uses suggests/hints at story beats that are really best experienced without any knowledge before hand. Watch the first two episodes, then come back.

Love how Studio NUT seems to love animating shows that criticize society at large. This is just as important as KyoAni normalizing relationships and conditions that are heavily stigmatized in Japan and to a lesser degree around the world.
What relationships are you referring to with KyoAni? The only thing I can think of is the lesbianess of Dragon Maid (and to a lesser extent Sound Euphonium).
been saying THIS. everything about it is quality and it’s made by talented people. (mob psycho) so sad to see it not as talked about or near as popular it should be and seeing it overshadowed by other popular titles dropping this season on the same day
It doesn't have to be sad for you. You get to enjoy the show, right? You don't need to be validated by people talking about it. That said... if you mean in terms of gaining hype for multiple seasons then I feel you.
@@user-dj9iu2et3r I understand that but part of enjoying an anime for a lot of people is the discussion that results from it. For me personally I would love more people to talk about certain anime not for validation but to discuss the themes or characters.
It's amazing that something like this is getting overlooked. Then again, episode 1 looked like it wasn't going to be innovative, and episode 2 betrayed everyone's expectations, on top of that Funimation set availability to all of it's episodes to "premium only" for about a week, so I wasn't able to see episode 3 until I was also able to see episode 4... maybe it wouldn't have been a surprise to me if there was anything else to watch.

4 mins into your video and I already KNOW this is a show I'm going to binge. AND its from the director of my favorite anime!!! boyyyyy I'm finna act up
It's always funny to see the anime equivalent of pointing at the stands with confidence before striking out, falling down and shitting their pants, all the while going, "I went beyond my limits!".
When I saw the original episode you did on it I could only think to myself “Did he not watch the second episode?!?” It literally turns the anime upside down and throws so many questions. The last surviving human beings have been reduced to garbage collectors and maintenance workers constantly fearing for their lives and fearing ever day that their home will be destroyed and live with the existential fear that there’s nothing they can do. But in reality it’s just a theme park for virtual gamers who seem to about the humans as much as the would a worthless NPC! That’s a premise! It makes me curious just how large they can open this world up. Are there other theme parks? Is there more than 1 Deca-Dence’s? So many places for this anime to go. And it’s already got one of the best action scenes(twice) where a giant metal fist is rocketed into a big ass monster’s face. That’s enough reason alone to watch it.

will admit, that 2nd episode twist initially disappointed me, was looking forward to a moderately grounded steampunk series, with a real threat to the characters and some fun action. so all the sci-fi layering kind of disappointed me, thought It bogged the show down into annoying Isekai tropes and would severely damage the tension of the series. and make it just feel like... say, SAO's Alfheim arc. where it's basically just a bunch of twats dicking around in a videogame with death being meaningless to them. but. two things happened amidst all that, given the great characterisation of Kaburagi and Natsume (the latter of whom is a fucking TESTAMENT to the power of great character animation in endearing you to a character) I continued watching just to enjoy the interplay of those two, even if, at that point, I had resigned myself to not really enjoying the story... then, as the premise becomes clear... I found myself, fucking LOVING the direction the story took, it was less... Alfheim (urgh) and more WestWorld flipped on its head, with a bit of Hunger Games thrown in and the core concept of James Cameron's Avatar except.. not bastardised... Westworld- AIs playing a 'game' in a closed off zone, with actual living human "NPCs" in the mix as opposed to real people playing a 'game' in a closed off zone with increasingly aware AI androids. Avatar- (Smurfahontas, not anime/cartoon hybrid masterpiece) using Avatars to communicate directly with an 'alien' race. except here, they don't know they're talking to fakes, so it isn't akin to using blackface as a communication bridger like it is in Smurfahontas. Hunger Games- death game trap for the humans, who are merely playthings for the rich, who also participate, but willingly as a point of fun and glory for themselves. amidst all this hybrid stuff, the key here, is that there's CONSEQUENCES, the Human 'Tankers' are decidedly mortal, there's no respawning for them. they're actual people they die brutally in an uncaring game, fighting for their ACTUAL survival while being deceived, the Gears can be killed aboard the ship for their infractions, they're mortal and there's consequences for them directly, even if in game they can just respawn, (still decent consequences here as they get entirely reset) this factor alone dispells basically all the problems of the Isekai subgenre which this skirts alongside. so the premise is a real winner for its ability to explore concepts of humanity, dehumanisation, AI, ownership, and adversity. and then you have Natsume and Kaburagi who are just fucking fantastic. Natsume's instantly endearing, basically a female version of the obstinate, earnest, wide-eyed shonen protag, (which is refreshing in of itself, though it would have been even more refreshing if fellow pioneer Promised Neverland hadn't pulled the same trick.) she's perceptive, emotionally honest, and a joy to watch, identifiable quickly for her desire to prove herself amidst adversity, and her desire for a better life. she's also naive and presents as someone who needs to learn, without pushing the boundaries into irritatingly stupid or contrived, (which is a common problem with Shonen protagonists, Naruto not even being able to initially pronounce Chakra annoys me to this day.) and Kaburagi is one of the best examples i've seen recently of this... pseudo-dad finding a new reason to live archetype. production is a little mixed, CGI elements feel a bit janky quite often, but everything else is top-notch stuff. the character designs are vibrant and convey a great deal, character animation as I said, is stellar, action sakuga is thrilling to experience, and the soundtrack is a belter. (even if one theme sounds like a rip-off of the melody of "Perfect Time' from Nanatsu no Taizai) overall, so glad I picked it up, and SO damn glad I didn't drop it when I second guessed it.
in most shows, this twist would've been saved towards the end, but because they reveal in the second episode it allows them to actually properly build on it as the show's core concept rather than build up a fake cocnept only to destroy it to shock you, and it creates tension because WE know the truth and Kabaragi (or however it's spelt) does, but the other main character doesn't
I'm so glad that someone with your reach is talking about this show. This is so far one of my favorite anime from this year and it's cool to see an opinion that almost mirrors my own as well.
So... you're telling me this series has a connection to Star Ocean: Till the End of Time? A game with a bit of a divisive twist in its own story that I don't want to really talk about or spoil for those who might not have played it or played it long enough. Neat! It's on my to-watch list, but I definitely moved it up now and it'll likely be the next thing I watch once I'm done watching definitely-not-an-anime-don't-fight-me Avatar The Last Airbender in totality again.

Haha yeah right their society is capitalist. Capitalism is defined by competition, and there can't be any of that when the entire world is- now that i have your attention, great video geoff. i stopped watching 8 minutes in to go binge all 5 episodes that were out so far, and then came back to watch the other 10.
Capitalism is defined by gaining as much *capital* via profit as possible. Competition is only a mechanism to achieve that, but history shows that whenever a corporation grows large enough to eliminate competition and increase their capital, they do it. Hence we have monopolies, and in this case, an absolute monopoly.
@@Zarastro54 I mean, the problem with the system is it's authoritarian, not capitalism. I don't deny that the system used capitalism to gain it's power but it owns everything and is using authoritarianism to keep hold over everything.
Is it just me, or do anime like these, where it focuses so much on the world instead of just a cast in a specific place, feels so nostalgic regardless of when they were released? Is it because the old school anime either expand so much on the world the characters inhabit or is it the art style and kinds of characters? The plot? Watching this reminded my of my childhood in Adventure Time, besides the apocalyptic vibe, the whole, "there's a whole world out there". It's like, after seeing the horizon in the world of this anime, I remembered the sunny morning weekends of watching cartoons. When back then, life was so simple. When the most you'd worry about is being late for the special episode of your favorite show.
This show really stuck with me. The relationship between natsu and kabu is one of the best things Deca-Dence has to offer. To see how kabu helps natsu become more confident, follow her dreams despite of what others tell her and how natsu helps kubo gain back his will to lead his life and put up a fight against all odds is just a beautiful thing to witness. This is in my top 5 of best written anime ever (not because of the plot, but more so character development). Additionally it is just a delight to watch because of studio Dogs' well-crafted, impactful animation. I'd love to hear your thoughts after watching the series till the end.
I like how so many popular works these days are just like "HEY, HERE'S SOME CLASS CONFLICT. HERE'S SOME CAPITALISM. CAPITALISM BAD PROBABLY" left-leaning messages in media are IN and I am HERE FOR IT
the immediate problem is the authoritarianism; capitalism is what let our heroine get a replacement arm from a black market shop. basically, their "capitalism" is like north korea's "democracy". their backstory of capitalism is so hand-wavy, its also like drk's fabricated history they tell their populace. it doesn't bother me though, it's just that fiction is fiction
@@enosdirk6542 in fairness, the shop doesn't claim ownership of the replacement arm, there's no rent, the shop seems to be independently owned and operated, etc. it's definitely not peak capitalism. my own problem with reading capitalism into the show is that we still haven't seen the cyborgs as a whole doing much labor. they say 'have a profitable day', but what are they doing to Generate a Profit? what does it look like for the average cyborg toiling away in service to The System? etc
THANK YOU This anime is so much slept on and people shit on it because they thought it was a snk rip off and then hate it more because it's not. They even says that the anime BETRAYED THEM, like wtf... Couldn't stand the shit this anime was getting for no reasons

I love that Jeff has become more left-wingy over the years. On the other hand, Gurren Lagann levels of comparison? I want to jump the bandwagon, but darling in the Franxx left me very skeptic. Having said that, Kamina-sama also thaught me to throw logic out of the window and believe in the me that believes in me
Unknownymous Po ako! I kind of just made up the word. The idea is that he’s getting to talking points common in the left wing ie: socialist, anarchist, etc
Give it a chance. The actual execution of a thing is always far more important than the description of its parts - just look at seemingly hyper-generic MHA - and Deca-Dence's execution is REALLY high level.
I'll be honest I never tried the series when he recommended it the first time but when I saw this video pop up I was, "welp, I've got some work to do" and I'm not disappointed at all
It's not a capitalist dystopia. It's a communist, state-governed fascist society. Saying they're owned by a corporation does not make it capitalist. You can't have capitalism without democracy, circulation of wealth, and social mobility. That's why China is capitalist only in its international businesses and only about 1% of its population actually benefits from that, the rest being barely more than slave labor. And let's not even go into North Korea.
What you are calling "democracy" is bourgeois republicanism. Democracy and communism are inseparable concepts opposed to both liberalism and capitalism. Fascism is the last resort of a terrified bourgeoisie to forestall proletarian revolution.
Yeah, I also think it's a communist or some other totalitarian regime. There is autocratism and "the leader" in the form of this corporation, some utopian bullshit and propaganda that their system is good and perfect, "we're all a part of the great system, comrades!" censorship, interference in life etc.
I'd like to point out that you're wrong. Here's the definition of Capitalism: 'an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.' Where anywhere does it say that Capitalism is exclusive to a Democratic system? And just a simple question for you, have you never played or heard of Shadowrun? A series that explores what happens when megacorporations control the lives of their employees and command their own armies. It seems someone only taught you about Democratic Capitalism, which is a narrowed down specific type of Capitalism.

@Yakadito Dito for me, messing up the plot and the story with this "game" and "bugs" thing when they could leave the story straight and clean, but analyzing the society that runs (and is based) on Deca-Dence would have been much more fascinating. But no, another conspiracy, another isekai :( ....
To those who didn't back out at episode 2,
You've earned my respect. Period.
Dude this series was so sick
I watched the hole show in a row before watching this vid....
Damn, so sad Deca-Dence's MAL rating is so low. But it doesnt really matter to me who didnt dropped it after episode 2. And what I got was one of the most boldest and in my opinion original anime to have come out in a long time.
Ain’t going to back out now…
In most shows, ths sudden shift in what the world is like and what the actual stakes are would have come across as a jarring, out of nowhere twist...but this avoids that because the reveal comes in at the SECOND EPISODE, meaning it's way less jarring and works better than Franxx's attempts.
“Subtle”
It’s an incredibly different artstyle lmao. But I agree
This video truly encapsulates with beautiful and refined rhetoric how much I want Kurenai to step all over me.
Watch the first two episodes, then come back.
yea he even spoiled episode 5
Yeah I wish I hadn't watched it, there should at least be a spoiler warning before the reveal. Still gonna watch the show, tho!
I stopped at 2:20. I think I'm safe? Whew.
Yeah he spoiled the ep 2 twist and I'm pretty annoyed
for 13 years I have been looking for the successor to my favorite anime of all time Gurren Lagann to think that after all this time Deca Dence might be it sends my hype levels SPIRALING out of control I can't wait to see if this series will finally be it especially since the 2010's were a disappointment in terms of that search

@@quadeevans6484 true that. Love the subreddits that talk about episodes of anime I like. Didn't consider that.

Ive been waiting really long for a video on decadence from anitubers thank you so much
When I saw the original episode you did on it I could only think to myself “Did he not watch the second episode?!?” It literally turns the anime upside down and throws so many questions.

Tbh as someone who's watched the show, this still helped clear up some of the plot. Thanks Jeff
will admit, that 2nd episode twist initially disappointed me,
was looking forward to a moderately grounded steampunk series, with a real threat to the characters and some fun action. so all the sci-fi layering kind of disappointed me, thought It bogged the show down into annoying Isekai tropes and would severely damage the tension of the series. and make it just feel like... say, SAO's Alfheim arc. where it's basically just a bunch of twats dicking around in a videogame with death being meaningless to them.
but. two things happened amidst all that, given the great characterisation of Kaburagi and Natsume (the latter of whom is a fucking TESTAMENT to the power of great character animation in endearing you to a character) I continued watching just to enjoy the interplay of those two, even if, at that point, I had resigned myself to not really enjoying the story...
then, as the premise becomes clear...
Hunger Games- death game trap for the humans, who are merely playthings for the rich, who also participate, but willingly as a point of fun and glory for themselves.
amidst all this hybrid stuff, the key here, is that there's CONSEQUENCES, the Human 'Tankers' are decidedly mortal, there's no respawning for them. they're actual people they die brutally in an uncaring game, fighting for their ACTUAL survival while being deceived, the Gears can be killed aboard the ship for their infractions, they're mortal and there's consequences for them directly, even if in game they can just respawn, (still decent consequences here as they get entirely reset)
this factor alone dispells basically all the problems of the Isekai subgenre which this skirts alongside.
so the premise is a real winner for its ability to explore concepts of humanity, dehumanisation, AI, ownership, and adversity.
and then you have Natsume and Kaburagi who are just fucking fantastic. Natsume's instantly endearing, basically a female version of the obstinate, earnest, wide-eyed shonen protag, (which is refreshing in of itself, though it would have been even more refreshing if fellow pioneer Promised Neverland hadn't pulled the same trick.) she's perceptive, emotionally honest, and a joy to watch, identifiable quickly for her desire to prove herself amidst adversity, and her desire for a better life. she's also naive and presents as someone who needs to learn, without pushing the boundaries into irritatingly stupid or contrived, (which is a common problem with Shonen protagonists, Naruto not even being able to initially pronounce Chakra annoys me to this day.)
and Kaburagi is one of the best examples i've seen recently of this... pseudo-dad finding a new reason to live archetype.
production is a little mixed, CGI elements feel a bit janky quite often, but everything else is top-notch stuff. the character designs are vibrant and convey a great deal, character animation as I said, is stellar, action sakuga is thrilling to experience, and the soundtrack is a belter. (even if one theme sounds like a rip-off of the melody of "Perfect Time' from Nanatsu no Taizai)
overall, so glad I picked it up, and SO damn glad I didn't drop it when I second guessed it.
TL;DR: Watch Deca-Dence
I don't understand how the 2nd episode disappoints in anyway, what is wrong with you people.
in most shows, this twist would've been saved towards the end, but because they reveal in the second episode it allows them to actually properly build on it as the show's core concept rather than build up a fake cocnept only to destroy it to shock you, and it creates tension because WE know the truth and Kabaragi (or however it's spelt) does, but the other main character doesn't
It did initially, but it pulled it back. I ended up loving it more than if it was just big mobile city and monsters.
@@BeowulfCav It disappointed me originally because I thought it turned into a SAO, videogame isekai type beat but now it's dope.

Have you never heard of monopolies?
Capitalism is defined by gaining as much *capital* via profit as possible. Competition is only a mechanism to achieve that, but history shows that whenever a corporation grows large enough to eliminate competition and increase their capital, they do it. Hence we have monopolies, and in this case, an absolute monopoly.

I like how so many popular works these days are just like "HEY, HERE'S SOME CLASS CONFLICT. HERE'S SOME CAPITALISM. CAPITALISM BAD PROBABLY"
left-leaning messages in media are IN and I am HERE FOR IT
the immediate problem is the authoritarianism; capitalism is what let our heroine get a replacement arm from a black market shop. basically, their "capitalism" is like north korea's "democracy". their backstory of capitalism is so hand-wavy, its also like drk's fabricated history they tell their populace. it doesn't bother me though, it's just that fiction is fiction

Yeah mortal engines + avatar bodies this sums up the combination
Idk i feel like know knowing this is where it goes, it kinda killed any interest i had
Give it a chance. The actual execution of a thing is always far more important than the description of its parts - just look at seemingly hyper-generic MHA - and Deca-Dence's execution is REALLY high level.
Don't worry, you don't know where it goes.
Thank you Jeff, more people need to watch this.
My man, that’s not capitalism, it’s big government.
It's a big corporation that bought the entire planet. Their motto is "Have a profitable day." My man. How can you possibly not get it?
I'll be honest I never tried the series when he recommended it the first time but when I saw this video pop up I was, "welp, I've got some work to do" and I'm not disappointed at all
It's not a capitalist dystopia. It's a communist, state-governed fascist society. Saying they're owned by a corporation does not make it capitalist. You can't have capitalism without democracy, circulation of wealth, and social mobility. That's why China is capitalist only in its international businesses and only about 1% of its population actually benefits from that, the rest being barely more than slave labor. And let's not even go into North Korea.
Their motto is literally "have a profitable day." This is not ambiguous or subtle. How do you not understand it?
Mother's Basement real compelling counter argument there
What you are calling "democracy" is bourgeois republicanism.
Here's the definition of Capitalism: 'an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.'
Where anywhere does it say that Capitalism is exclusive to a Democratic system? And just a simple question for you, have you never played or heard of Shadowrun? A series that explores what happens when megacorporations control the lives of their employees and command their own armies.
It seems someone only taught you about Democratic Capitalism, which is a narrowed down specific type of Capitalism.
The plot twist blew my freaking mind, I can’t stop thinking about it
