Sergeant Speed The car developers install tail gates, because it's a pick up truck. It's designed to transport cargo, and the tail gate helps. That being said, removing the tail gate will not only reduce weight, it will also improve the aerodynamics. making the truck run faster.
It did good for a work truck vs a racing mustang, the truck is so much heavier, they just wanted to take some of the mustangs advantage away to make it exciting

The damn thing is shaped like a brick. The tailgate weighs almost 55lbs(or more. Don't remember) So yeah. Taking it off saved some weight at the cost of very little loss of aerodynamics for a vehicle who's front end is more flat than a parking lot. Aero only comes into play for downforce or gas mileage which, because it's a truck. It's not going to street race past 120. At 120mph having the tailgate or not it's not going get a better trap time with or without it from aero alone. It'll be solely for the 60 foot on weight. On a 2WD it might help with slipping because trucks have next to no weight on the back.
