χρονης κ. well black people who were traded by their own people did care. Also the people who are still getting harassed and fell like they are still treated like slave might care. I mean I'm just saying. I get back then they would not have the same morals us what we have now but you can't blame people for being hurt as they feel that their ancestors were only there for profit and not treated like real people.
republic1001 why do morons like you continually say Africans sold their own people? When you are at war with a rival tribe and you sell your enemies for weapons to defeat your enemies, then it is not "selling your own people" fucking moron.
I'm sure he knew very well, that the unfortunate/poor Africans were completely uprooted, had no where to go, let alone extremely low chance of ever getting back to their native homeland and this made them prime candidates to join his crew. Instead of being taken effectively as a prisoner then into a slave, anyone would rather join Blackbeard and atleast have most of their personal freedom back. The 60 taken probably were the most strong/young ones (without going over capacity). I think he was very smart.
The World Critic and gamer Nothing he did was out of heart. He needed crew members. He only took about 60 slaves to join his crew and left the other 440 or so marooned with the French.
@Brad Roberts Better than working on a slave plantation. Pirates had a code back then, the crew could actually vote the captain out if they were cowardly, bad leader, extremely cruel, etc. The only times the captain had command was during battles or raids, etc. and he would get most of the share and the rest of the crew would get their share. Pirates were pretty much democratic. Self democratic. Basically, you either work for the captain and get payed to fight for him and manage the ship or rot on a plantation.
another fucking dumb southerner... one who probably believes that the South wasn't fighting for slavery in contradiction to what the Confederacy's founding documents deliberately stated
who cares if he's a southerner, he's not wrong. it's not like black beard was going around freeing all the slaves he could find. they were just cheap labor.
Alexander slaves didnt choose to remain captive, conditions were obviously much shittier on the salve ships. Blackbeard chose the slaves who looked like they had the most promise and let the rest go. Maybe Blackbeard kept them as slaves, but hostorical accounts suggest otherwise. You're right, it shouldnt matter that he's a southerner, but somehow I dont think it's irrelevant that the guy with a Disneyfied idea of what slave conditions were also has a Confederate flag in his profile picture.
perfect labor pool. wasn't about abolitionism, is about having a source of new crew members who were highly motivated and likely extremely grateful. a happy and motivated crew is a perfect crew.
@TheCrazyKid1381 Facts, it's a shame he died a horrible death. But he went out like a badass. 5 shots and 20 slashes. He went out like a legend. Most pirates were people who didn't want to be ruled by a king, they didn't care about your skin color, religion, nationality, etc. As long as you can work and fight, you were treated like everybody else. Of course you had the cruel pirates that did disgusting things but everything has a few bad eggs.
will crow I kind of just wonder like. You without a doubt hate these guys. There’s 440 of you and 30 of them. You just watched them get punked by pirates and now your stuck on a island. I just wonder why they didn’t revolt. On the ship they were literally bolted to the floor boards so they couldn’t do anything to help their situation.
Black beard needed enough men to sail a second ship, and the slaves were needed as deck hands. He probably took the strong men with promise of freedom and wealth. For service and loyalty
Who would be the best crew that you could get for a pirate ship at that time, recruit the people who have been kidnapped, treated badly, who friends and families have been killed, that's the best crew you could ever have, the people who the slavers made hate them, just think of the fear those slave ships captains had when they enter that area.
Before Blackbeard even captured Queen Anne's Revenge, his lieutenant and second-in-command was a man named Black Caesar (someone whose impressive stature rivaled that of Blackbeard himself). Black Caesar was rumored to have formerly been an African tribal war chief before being captured as a slave, escaping slavedom, becoming a pirate of some repute in his own right (he had both notoriety and wealth), then leaving his established hideout to seek out Blackbeard and join up with him. Black Caesar remained one of his most loyal crew members (and friends) up until, and beyond, Blackbeard's death. Blackbeard was said to have always had a crew of roughly half ex-slaves, of which all were treated as equals to any other crew member. On capturing La Concorde/Queen Anne's Revenge, Blackbeard gave the slaves a choice - either they could join him or be set free on a nearby (semi-inhabited) island. Some joined him and the rest went ashore, though it's believed those who went ashore were eventually re-captured and enslaved anew.
Makes sense. As a target it's poorly defended, and by freeing the best slaves, they're likely to join your crew and become fiercely loyal. Always good to get more manpower
People get that misconception because he spent a lot of time in the Carolinas like the time he famously blockaded Charleston, South Carolina and took ships and crews hostage and demanded medicine.
Probably took them on because he knew they wouldn't habe many qualms about killing those who bought them. And they had no connections, so they couldn't leave the pirate life.
Why are people praising Black beard like he was some kind of Abolitionist. Didn't you guys hear that he let the French keep their human cargo and let them ashore in the New world for all the slaves to now begin their great lives as slaves. He let only the strong and the warriors join his crew and that was just to benefit himself, he didn't do it FOR the slaves.
blackbeard wasnt only looking for gold (smooth jazz starts playing) he was looking for love
He was also looking for Milk Duds and some sweet patterned tile to decorate the commode area of his cabin.
Melvin T. Nimtz II ya like jazz?
Melvin T. Nimtz II in other words he was looking for Booty 😂😂😂
That’s exactly what I was thinking!!!
Melvin T. Nimtz II he wanted both kinds of booty

Sam Craven yeah! "it doesn't matter what color you are when you die for me." I bet that was his thinking
Thutmosis7 But the Moors were Berber/Arab people. Not black.
Thutmosis7 Moors? Moors?! Buddy... I think you might have been a few centuries off there.
That was pretty smart of him. It was an ideal way to get more crew members.
tail feather he pulled a luffy , just how he got zoro
Highly motivated too, I bet.

Thought they were going to something like “he found the real treasure wasn’t gold but, friendship and that together anything could be accomplished”
Blackbeard definitely would be an asset today.

if Blackbeard were alive today, he'd probably get to stay in the imperial suite of a five-star hotel, for free.
STEVE P You might need to read a bit more about what he's done.
Yeah.... He really wouldn’t
He’d be in prison probably for some modern day crimes, pirates were gangs of the seas.
Chinese Himmrah Still a 5-Star hotel by his time period standards.
Free food
Free bed
Free entertainment
And its all for FREE!!
I believe he was looking for the legendary treasure One Piece. Can't believe they didn't mention it here.
funnyguy3D, it's okay if you like Bleach man, we all still like you!

Eric Alfaro One step ahead of you, went back and passed with flying colours! Now I'm in second grade! X'D
One piece?
I think he hated Big Brother. Could use a Blackbeard today!
Definitely
He was a proponent of democracy and freedom, something the various empires didn't provide nor was interested in providing to its people.
Jamar Jackson u could be the new blackbeard we will call u blackboy!
I think today he prefers to be called Beard of Color.
There is honor among thieves.
he needed soldiers to fight in his war... simple.
Most likely true. Pretty much everyone was racist or prejudice back then. He mostly like saw those slaves as profit or easy labor aboard his fleet.
Right and who would be more loyal than a man you took out of chains?
He didn't care about skin colour. Just abled bodies.
@TheCrazyKid1381 Facts, it's a shame he died a horrible death. But he went out like a badass. 5 shots and 20 slashes. He went out like a legend. He had his head cut off then he swim around his ship then he died(totally real btw not some silly myth)
He died where I live, shits dope... he also threw the biggest pirate party there on this chill ass beach
Blackbeard was the Dutch Van der Linde of pirates
Give a man his freedom, and he will be loyal forever
