  • In July 2008, Australia ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
When it comes to housing, the convention states all people should be able "to choose their residence and where and with whom they live on an equal basis with others, and not be obliged to live in particular living arrangements". So is Australia living up to its responsibility?
Let Us In is a co-production between ABC, Melbourne Disability Institute and Point 5 Productions.

I often describe myself as having won the lottery, as I have a fully accessible public housing unit. Recently my kitchen was modified so I can cook much more safely. It is perfect for my needs. And I am immensely grateful, every day.
But every day I am here, I know there are thousands of other Australians (and millions around the world) who don't have safe, secure housing, let alone the accessibility they need.
    Surely we can do better.

I'm also constantly amazed at houses that are willingly designed to be inaccessible. Having a disability is something that everyone is potentially only moments away from. Whether temporary from breaking a leg or similar, or permanently through illness or accident, it can happen to anyone.
