  • To know what size headset you need for your bicycle frame there are two ways to measure. This video shows you how to measure your frame with the headset cups taken off the frame. With the headset cups off your frame you can measure the inner diameter of the frame's head tube, the standard size inner diameter is 1 1/4".

    Thanks for posting this because you've helped me figure out which headset to buy for a bike I'm building from scratch and it's my first time building a bike.

    I wish I'd read the comments before watching this video. I need to replace the headset on my 1983 Jamis Boss Cruiser. As a first time diy project I need accurate information on the sizing of the headset replacement. Idk, maybe back in 1983 one and a quarter inch was standard sizing?

    I think those kind of measurements should be done with a calliper instead of ruler....

  • @flaminx0r

    The most popular sizes are 1 1/8" and 1.5"; a 1" steerer is rare and the headsets are rarer.
    I do agree however that 1 1/4" is not a common size at all!
    Otherwise, great advice!

    How about explaining the difference or a regular headset, and integrated?

    definitely, i have a caliper that went missing, sometimes if a ruler is all you have, it'll do just fine.

    You got it, you will need your tapered fork measurements as well as the frame and headset measurements to match.

    you need to buy a caliper to be more precise over a ruler....they are cheap if you buy it from Harbor Freight....but Mitutoyo or a Starrett would be best if you can afford it.

    those measurements are off you're measuring OD saying it's ID one time you measured 1/2 od and1/2 ID I got so confused watching this Man use a caliper

    1 1/4 is NOT a standard headtube size, and hasn't been used on bikes since the early 90's. The most common sizes are 1 1/8" and 1". The outer diameter of the headset cup and the inner diameter of the headtube should be the same for proper fitting, and I would suggest using a nice pair of calipers instead of a ruler when measuring.

    • @melee401
      @melee401 5 лет назад

      I agree. 11/4" and 11/2 are serious downhill systems OR aluminum framed bikes, take your choice. I have 11/8" threaded and I have a HELL of a time getting parts that are correct for it. The frame tube ID id is dead on 1.125".

    I don't understand why the measurements aren't given in metric measurements. I can't wrap my head around 5 16 of anything but I do get 38 mm. I am sure the bike manufacturers don't think in fractions and most likely never did. Using both imperial and metric is not efficient nor practical.

    • @bernieolivera5632

      "Using both imperial and metric is not efficient nor practical".
      That is not a true statement! Neither one system is more accurate than the other. It has to do with the engineering requirements and the dimensioning; and the applied tolerances but mostly where the parts a manufactured.
      By the way it’s a bike not the space shuttle.
      To get the metric dimension multiply the standard dimension by .039. It's just simple math. How hard is that?
      Use your brain!!

  • @donsjuand

    Measure the inner diameter because that is where the headset cups will need to fit in. Then look for a headset outer diameter that is equal to frame inner diameter. Make sense?

    Thanks for the info, i'm hearing some conflicted information from this video and what the manufacturer of my bike told me. I bought a KHS Flite 100 without a headset and I measured the inner diameter of the tube and it says its 1 3/16" but when I emailed KHS they told me they use a 1" Cane Creek headset. Can you shed some light on this for me?

    I dont care if you use a ruler but at least use one that is all there. We cant see exactly where hes starting the measurement from because its missing.

    Why not just use millimetres? 🙄🙄

  • @doormat321
    @doormat321 12 лет назад +3

    your measurements are way off you are measuring the id (interneal diameter) from the outside and the most common size of head set is 1 1/8 inch its just you measurement are crap. i find it easier to measure the stearer tube of the fork to get a more accurete result.

    • @Machinima2Minecraft
      @Machinima2Minecraft 4 года назад +1

      Ur forgetting about the washer tho, so the correct measurement would be that of the inner steerer tube routing because it’s the washer that goes around the actual steerer tube and presses the bearing up against the side walls so getting a bearing measured for the steerer is just wrong.
