  • Is your discipleship one of feelings? Or one of faith? When you decide to persevere in virtue, is it because it feels good? Or because you're relying on faith?
Today, Fr. Mark-Mary gives us another one of his "gut-check" videos and asks us to examine our intentions honestly and gently.

I did find my faith and a call to the Church as my world got hard and dark. But I won't lose it if my world suddenly becomes bright and happy.
I go to Mass because that's where I find a new meaning in life. That's where I see the face of Jesus.

Feeling come and go. Emotions come and go. we must persevere regardless of how well
Faith comes from within regardless how we feel, Lord increase my faith and not based on how I feel. We can’t do this alone we always have God at our side to help us carry our cross every day, God will not give us a cross heaver than we can handle
Trust in the LORD. not our fleeting feelings or emotions which can lead us astray

TJ Hughes . You said it so wonderfully. May the living God bless you.
These feelings and emotions are given us to have mercy on our neighbour . It overflows to such an extent, so much as GOD has mercy on us himself. It was never meant for use on ourselves. So let your feelings and emotions flow when forgiving some one , while letting go of their faults . It is a gift.

My mother gave me such wonderful advice about prayer, faith, and feelings. We are not always going to “feel” like praying, but we push on, pray, and give the Lord what we have in that moment. If our faith and prayer life is only about the moments of consolation, are we loving Him only when He makes us feel good and gives us what we ask for? Or do we trust in Him always, through consolation and desolation.

Hi Fr. Mark-Mary, I think you make really good points here. I have heard Abbot Nicholas Zachariadis describe 4 levels of existence: 1) Physical, 2) Emotional, 3) Intellectual, and 4) Spiritual or Mystical. Everyone is at least at level 1 and most are at level 2, I believe he has said; that is, the level of feelings (physical would include rituals, for example). 3 is more rare, and makes me think of someone like Bishop Robert Barron, who is so keen to present an intellectual Catholicism due to its lack in the culture, as he sees it. But 4 is where it is really at: our direct communion with God. The emotions or feelings may fluctuate, but faith keeps us rooted in God. I think it is very important to realize, as you say, that we cannot figure it all out; that is where trust comes in. To me, even in the storm (like in the Gospels), he is still there, taking care of things, no need to worry at the deepest or highest level. So, it is all good. Even someone like St. Anthony the Great who was always battling demons and so forth, shows that the power of the Lord is stronger than all of that. For, he has already (ultimately) guaranteed the victory for us, though we must cooperate in his victory and will for us as we walk toward eternity little by little.
God bless you, thank you, Fr. Mark-Mary.

I don’t think people avoid prayer and faith because it doesn’t “feel good” rather, I think that people do not accept and understand their own emotions. Societally we are emotionally sick. I think people would rather be numb and apathetic in an attempt to avoid feeling anything at all. So if someone wants to binge tv instead of praying, I don’t think they’re choosing to binge tv because it feels good- but because it feels safe and comfortable (perhaps that’s what you mean by good- but I think it’s important to get clear about distinctions) Sitting in prayer might not be feel “good” (and on that note, we need to stop labeling emotions altogether as good or bad- they simply are!) but because they don’t want to face the complexity of emotions they’re experiencing under the surface, whether that’s because of shame, guilt, fear, or anything else. Perhaps they also don’t want to bring that before God, because they know God will reveal themselves to themselves. We can’t hide from Him. Society has created a fear of experiencing the fullness of our humanity and our emotional life.

A lot of pastors used to copy Mother Angelica's teachings decades ago. She really put a lot of pastors in the right direction. In the 1970s and 80s, I was watching Catholic and protestant presentations, so I saw the blatant copying. Good that the Pastor is still on the right track that the Church has taught for nearly 2,000 years.

It's overwhelms me to tears, thanks to His gift of my feelings! That moves me to surrender my life for Him. I think that God touches us differently. My feelings bring me to profound appreciation and feels me with enthusiasm to love and serve and spare no sacrifice for others.

    Just for the question....👍👍!
It is the discipline... But, we have to keep on.
When I'm tired, I switch with "talking", letting it all in his hands (this is the theory). But, when I need a sign, I look around seeing the world's troubles getting positively changed at a genius God's speed. When my eyes are opening a little to see it, I tell Him "You're Genius" 😉in admiration of how He does it. So, it isn't necessarily "about me" but through the others change that I'm admiring God acts. And, yes, this does affect me,as if He knew I'd need a little (most of time) big sign.
Those years, children don't have all needed spiritual support. Though, I see the Holy Spirit opening spiritual eyes in them through little words they could say.
On of my niece had to get an operation for cancer. Prior to this, she had chimo-therapies. But, on the operation table, as she was opened, doctors noticed it wasn't any worth operating; she responded really well to her prior treatments; meaning, she kept her body parts. She'd keep some little treatments but, I certainly would say, it was a miracle.
Four months before this, when we heard about her cancer (Mother at young age), I gave her a "Blessed Mother Mary with Jesus" pictures and, for her child, a little statue of Mary. I was wondering if at 7 years old (not prepared into) if she would understand. But, it seems, Mary did the rest, cause this little Sarah was well surrounded.
So, I believe, there were people praying for her young mother. And nurses and people around my young niece told her, it was a miracle, as herself told me.
Let say this, little by little but surely Mary took care of my little niece. And that now, she is certainly starting to believe in Mary and her Power of Love for her. I believe my niece and her young child will start a new spiritual relationship with Mary. I'll do my best to encourage both.
So, once in a while, a touch of feelings helps and encourage the faith.
I believe, it is as with a child; first with sweet and, eventually, you don't need that much sweet, but the act of faith that God keeps forging our hearts through some silence and God's peace.
So, once in a while, I like when God's keeping me informed of His Genius acts (grace) on this world.
    God bless!!

Why not both? "Feelings and figure it out" confuses me. Life is about figuring things out; that's the beauty of life, discerning God's pathway for each of us. I understand feelings are fleeting, and I embrace faith as an expression of gratitude for existence, rather than nothingness, but are we denying our humanity with a renouncement of feelings? Did not Christ feel anything? If he was like us in all things but sin, does that mean the removal of feelings? Again, I'm all for faith, but I'm ALSO all for "figuring it out." I may "feel" the depressing, anguishing, and spiritually dry dark night of the soul, but I also have faith in the rising dawn.

There is a passage from a book I read that goes to the heart of the matter, a question really; do you follow Jesus or do you admire him? A lot of people, especially those who claim to be spiritual but not religious fall into the admiring camp.
“Many will say to me on that day ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name? Did we not drive out demons in your name? Did we not do mighty deeds in your name?’ Then I will declare to them solemnly, ‘I never knew you.' ― Matthew: 7

This is a good video for me. I love passion, excitement, etc. I am a very *feelings* type person. I used to think I was melancholic but I think I'm sanguine too. I have obsessive and addictive tendencies. Feelings should not dictate your choices. People do very unreasonable things because of their feelings. I wonder if it is sinful to "follow your heart." I have difficulty accepting uncertainty and ambiguity. I am someone who wants to figure everything out.

    • @martymcfly4464
      @martymcfly4464 2 года назад

these tendencies are disordered through sin (whether our own or ancestral or sins of the world). I know from experience. Do not submit that you were born that way, sin has corrupted you to become sinfully addicted to these things. God will test you to push through these tendencies, and the more you trust in Him and turn to Him the more properly ordered your tendencies will become. Please don't fall into the new-age trap that you were born this way and God can't reorient your desires. He can and will if you let Him.

@@IONov990 I assume you are a woman so you're likely not going to like the answer in this new day and age, but it is backed up by Scripture and Tradition. Women are more easily influenced by their passions and emotions which is why God designed men generally to lead, and why women are to submit to the men. Women have failed terribly in our times to do that. Men have failed miserably in leading others (in family and culture) toward God through sacrificial love like Christ does for His Church. Men by nature are more logical and reasoned and less able to be deceived. Women are more compassionate and nurturing and emotional, but also more easily deceived. This is why Scripture tells us how relationships between the two are to be complimentary, but it is backwards in our culture. The very first sin of Adam and Eve goes deeper than Eve simply taking the apple, she went outside of God's ordered structure of the family. She should have brought it to Adam's attention first (Adam also sinned big time).
Now sin is so prevalent in our culture that men are being ruled by our passions and desires, but that is not how God designed us, rather it is the effects of our sins that distorts us. And to make matters worse, we don't want to recognize it and repent and let God heal us and order our desires properly through faith and reason and prayer, so things just keep getting worse and worse. Look at the breakdown of families, gender disorders, homosexuality (St. Paul talks about why that comes into play, essentially because of our sins), etc...

I wonder if being more emotional makes women stupid.
I am curious what men get out of dating women.
      Women seem kind of annoying.
Women seem to always hate and compete with each other.

@@IONov990 Men LOVE a traditional woman. Someone that will nurture kids and be a supportive wife that will take care of the house and have their husband's backs no matter what. A woman that loves kids and is loyal. There is nothing more attractive to a man (obviously looks are important too). Unfortunately, feminism has taken over most women to where they have been lied to in school, media, entertainment, etc... to be told that they can do what men do. They can't, they're not designed that way, just as men aren't designed to have maternal qualities. and now women are growing up wondering why they are single and 35 years old. And men, not founded on God, see scantily dressed women prancing around in their more beautiful years (early twentys ish) and let their lustful desires get the better of them and have babies out of wedlock with different women. It's almost impossible to find a woman that hasn't grown feminist tendencies (because they are more easily deceived). Most of their fathers (the ones that actually stuck around) have failed them by telling them they're princesses that can have whatever they want rather than teaching them to be virtuous and modest and protecting them from the godless ways of our society. A virtuous man is really simple. He wants to lead a family to God. He is going to have to make choices for a family that contradict our godless culture, and they're going to be tough and unpopular choices. He doesn't want to fight the world AND his wife at every turn.

About Adriàn Ortega Rojas, Vocational for The Priesthood in The Work of The Church, talk about, send regards for Father Mark Mary, I agree with Father at speaking about we should follow to The Lord Jesuschrist by Faith, not by feelings, like The Apostle Saint Peter, to persevere in The Lord and in The Love of The Lord, it is hard to fight in The Spiritual Fight but we must fight with The Help of Lord Jesuschrist, The Blessed Virgin Mary and with God Almighty Father

I believe that faith is NOT a feeling. For this video, before watching at this home, at work, do I need to "feel" something in my heart, to love the Lord with everything I have & am? Or do I just say it with words? From my heart, that is. With NO feelings? Including when praising Him? Please let me know, guys. Thank you & God bless! 🙏

I think with my head instead with my emotions. I come to realize people who think with their emotions are irrational people and because they think of only themselves they hurt other people never thinking about the consequences of their own actions. Basically trying to discuss an issue with an emotional person is like talking to a wall. It's much easier to speak with someone who is calm as they listen to the person who is speaking to them therefore they can respond in kind rationally.
I've noticed with the younger generation many are driven by their emotions including males which itself shows me that masculinity is disappearing as men tend to think with their head instead with their emotions this also makes them more dangerous as they tend to act out upon their anger.

Great video. I don't know your audience numbers but it seems mostly women based off comments. You want men to follow this channel, more gut check videos and challenges. We have been hearing effeminate kumbaya "everyone is going to heaven" preaching most our lives (most of us) and there is nothing less attractive. There is a reason the biggest denomination in America is ex-Catholic. I meant this to be a positive comment but I got carried away. Please keep up the gut check hard truth videos. We need to be challenged to truth, especially the men including myself.
