Yes, there are a number of safety protocols in place, and every station has an e-stop button that would shut down the line. Attitude, tho is another thing. Some plants do produce more parts in-house than others. Toyota Kentucky (largest facility) has a Powertrain plant and can produce engines in addition to their other 3 plants producing Camry, RAV4, and Lexus, while I believe Toyota Alabama specializes in producing only engines. While automobiles have over 3,000 parts to assemble, it would be very difficult (and actually more expensive) to produce everything needed for automobile production under one roof

Toyota is the most demanding of car companies for flat steel. We used to be there go to steel supplier until the company decided that we could only make enough steel to fill there orders and then when a defect or supply problem occurred there wasn’t enough steel keep them going so we ended up sending substandard material just to make it so they wouldn’t shut down. This caused Toyota to think we couldn’t make defect free steel like they wanted. So we no longer are trusted to make many parts for Toyota. Completely a management screw up.
Tariffs and nationalistic protectionism. The Ronald Reagan era placed heavy tariffs on Japan made products to persuade Americans to buy American made products.
