  • The Beatles fired Pete Best and chose Ringo Starr over him because "...Ringo was the better drummer," but was Best really all that bad? We take a look/listen to measure the validity of that claim.

In my honest opinion, I would say that Ringo Starr was the right drummer for The Beatles in the long run, because he could keep in time better as far as beats per minute is concerned. Also, Ringo is more creative with his fill-ins than Pete Best is; they are unforgettable like those in "A Day in the Life", "Hey Jude", and "Come Together". With all that said, while Pete Best is not an outstanding or phenomenal drummer, I would not say that he is an abominable one either. I was not bored by his playing, although I would have to agree with you that he was somewhat dragging in the video that you showed us. Anyway, I enjoyed your commentary Jerrid.

If you compare Pete's tempo at the start of the live I Saw Her Standing There (6:05) vs at the end (10:00) you can hear the difference. Best did not maintain the BPM, but slowed slightly. Same thing comparing 11:30 vs 13:10 (though not as pronounced a slide).

LOL. After a lifetime, people are still talking about this? No, Pete Best wasn't a great drummer. If he was, he would have been asked by other good Liverpudlian bands, like The Searchers and Gerry and The Pacemakers, after he was sacked. Best's mother, Mona, owned the Casbah Club and that was the stage The Silver Beatles needed for gigs. Pete could barely keep a beat, but it was better than nothing. On the Decca Tapes you can exactly hear how he sucked at drumming.
Ringo was a in a different dimension. He was an excellent drummer, made great fills but never tried to be in the limelight with unnecessary solo's. He only got one, literally in The End. As John said: it was always the plan to sack Pete Best if we could get a better drummer. Everything else (jealousy of Pete's good looks and talent, Epstein helping the 'jewish' Ringo) is nonsence.

It’s impossible to say who was the better drummer at the time. Ringo has the weight of history behind him. Judging Pete on what he did as a 18,19, 20 year-old or now as an 80 year-old is ridiculous. I’m old enough to remember that Ringo was regarded as the luckiest guy in showbiz in the 60s because he was considered nowhere near the musician that the other three were. It’s only since the Beatles heyday that misty eyed popular opinion has built him up into some kind of genius. He was inventive because he was a leftie on a right-handed kit and because he didn’t have good technique. Yes, he held down the beat, but IMHO what many now call “genius” is only seen as such because of the nostalgia that surrounds it, not because no one else could have played it. Had they kept Pete in the band, would their trajectory have been the same? Probably. I’d suggest few people bought a Beatles record because of the drumming.

  • @scottcarter8155

John said Pete was a good drummer but he wasn't a good Beatle. In Germany he often hook up with a girl and didn't make their show. Ringo played at another club then came to see The Beatles and they would have him fill in or Paul would play if Ringo wasn't there. The band would hang out after a show and Pete would leave. You can't have someone you can't depend on. The only band I was in we plated a show with 22-23 songs then did a 10 minute blues jam and it looked like we could start looking for shows, then the singer knocked up the drummers daughter and split and we could never get a singer that would show up for practice. Now I'm not saying Pete was a drumming virtuoso here, but he was still considered pretty good and if you do any real research, you will find that after removing Pete from the band they asked 4 other drummers to drum for them who all turned them down because they didn't like what they were doing to Pete. Not only did they not go straight to Ringo, but they weren't even considering Ringo until they had no other choice. He was literally the bottom of the barrel last resort as he was the only other drummer around at the time who could at least keep decent time, and he happened to say yes, or they might have had to stop for a while. Most don't know this and don't want to know this because they don't want the truth to get in the way of a good story. Strictly speaking, Pete got screwed and Ringo, who was a very average ordinary no frills, no thrills drummer, got lucky, simple as that.

Is any of this still a thing ? Paul said when Ringo used to fill in with them in Hamburg , everything ' felt right ' , John said they were lucky to get him , he was a working professional ( with his own car ! ) and they were just ' herberts ' . The ' not even the best drummer in the Beatles ' quote was actually Jasper Carrott , a seriously ordinary pommy ' comedian ' .. . When the Beatles backed Tony Sheridan at Polydor in Germany ' producer, legendary bandleader Bert Kamfeort made Pete Best take his bass drum out of the studio . Ringo was the Beatles drum machine ... He was there for every session , when he had enough , everyone went home . Pete Best was a one trick pony , and it wasn't a very good one . An adequate four on the floor , meat and potatoes , no frills thumper . Fine for dancehalls and tiny clubs, but totally out of his depth in the studio ... He got a huge Pay Day when the anthology came out , I should be so lucky . Try and play some of Ringo's iconic parts sometime ... and the weird ones . Rain , Ticket to Ride , I Am the Walrus , Come Together ... Ringo was the guy . End. Of . Discussion .

Much of Beatles lore is fiction designed for good publicity during their glory years. Pete was not a bad drummer. There's no way they would have kept him in the band for two whole years if he sucked as bad as people like to claim now.
The band did not ask for Pete to be replaced. No one from EMI at their audition suggested that Pete be replaced. George Martin told Brian Epstein that IF he offered The Beatles a recording contract he was going to use a session drummer in the studio, a practice that was quite common then. Epstein panicked and thought that the recording contract might be in jeopardy. He was the one who told John, Paul, and George that Pete needed to go.
Another fallacy is that the lads had wanted Ringo all along. Once the decision was made to replace Best two other drummers were offered the job before they asked Ringo, but they both said no. Epstein even asked a fourth drummer after Ringo had already said yes, but when he turned them down Ringo got the job by default.
After the Beatles broke up John Lennon famously claimed that Best was a lousy drummer that they always intended to replace, but John also said "The Beatles were at their best when they were playing in the clubs in Hamburg and Liverpool. That was the real Beatles." That's when Pete was the drummer.
In the end I believe Ringo was a better fit both musically and personally, but I also believe that Beatlemania would have happened with either drummer. The real magic that made the difference was having George Martin as their producer. He was vital to their early success.
