The dedication of Peter to this podcast is awesome ! Not only continuously listening to it, appearing on it for hours on end, apparently instantly coming back to join, once he's "challenged" to do so, but also to find the time to rerecord the "Day Tripper" section for the podcast. We can be so lucky for everything he's doing for Beatle-Fans over the last months and the pure love he shows about it.
Kinda reminds me how much love was put into the Behind the Szenes of the Lotr Trilogy. This man ist just all about sharing knowledge and experiences !
In case you read this Peter: "Hi !" ;D

The fact that such a prolific A-list director is also deeply devoted to bonding with fellow fans (of The Beatles and perhaps of Tolkien too,.though I’m not up on podcasts from Middle Earth) demonstrates that Jackson has genuine rather than sculpted humility and is the salt of the earth we hoped he’d be, and makes a consumer of content like me feel I too make a passive contribution to culture rather than just endlessly doss about!

There is only so much Mal can do. If I listen to the new 2023 remix of She Loves You, which is not from the original master tape (because it's lost), i'm disappointed. But that should matter, since the mix itself could be dissected by MAL, liberating all the radio additions ( which Peter said it did). And of course, you hear SOME of the Shakespeare in the new mix - but most of it, including the very last things heard in the standard mix, are so buried in the new mix that they’re virtually inaudible. Also, although the Shakespeare performance was live the night the Beatles mixed the track, a recording of the broadcast exists (I have a copy), so even if MAL hadn’t been able to separate it, the existence of the recording separately means that there is no excuse for it having been lost in the new mix.

When I first heard that “then and now” is coming out, I was disappointed, as I wanted to “grow old with me” to come out instead. As the song was about to come out and be released, I was expecting NOTHING. On the day it came out on audio, I listened to it and it was better than I expected. Then the next day when the video came out for “now and then”, I fell in love with the song, as the song grew on me. Now it it will always be one of my favorite all time Beatles song. The message of the song, the magic of the song, the love by Paul to complete the song of his best friend John is heartwarming and finally, hearing John’s voice is unimaginable and priceless. What I learned by the song is that, Shouldn’t we all not look in our heart and remember our forgotten loved ones, every now and then.

@@dukeviking Paul did state in a interview that he was given 4 songs, and “grow old with me” was one of these songs, however in the interview, it sounded like Paul felt uncomfortable doing this song at that time (1994). Hopefully as Paul will rethink this as technology is now better and John’s demo can be separated, and do a duet with him and John (alike he did with “i got a feeling”.). With the overwhelming positive response from the public to “now and then”, I know there’s a very slim chance that this will happen, but maybe it will, as this would be a fitting thing for Paul to do.

FYI: According to Mark Lewisohn, the song Jackson mentions that The Beatles are playing in the silent color footage with Pete Best in 1962 is "Dream," which Cliff Richard had recently covered. (The footage is usually dated to Hulme Hall around Valentine's Day. Ironically, Pete himself is not in the camera shot.) It was a swing-era standard which Ringo also recorded on SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY. I have never seen any reference to the second performed song he cites, and since the footage is so brief, it seems doubtful that there really is such an additional one.

Hello Gentleman. I just finished this "chat" with Peter Jackson. I think he and his team are geniuses. After i heard about the MAL tech they developed for the Get Back sessions i immediately thought " Yes! Now this opens the door for them to remix / remaster the ENTIRE Beatles catalog! I was really encouraged when Revolver came out. However, after seeing the Red & Blue records released i am not optimistic that there will be any further deluxe remasters. Since they put a LOT of Rubber Soul on the Red LP i seriously doubt that they will put out a box for Rubber Soul. If they don't do that record, a record that inspired Brian Wilson to make pet Sounds, what hope is there for them to go all the way back to Please Please Me, with The Beatles or A Hard Days Night, not to mention Beatles For Sale? As the discussion progressed and Peter spoke about what he was interested in doing in the future but that it was totally up to Apple or Disney, in the case of additional Get Back footage, I feel like this might be the end of any major releases. the other reasons he mentioned was about the "shareholders" of these companies and wanting to make money for their investments. There has never seemed to be much imagination coming from Apple regarding what the fans are clambering for - EVERYTHING! LOL I can come up with a MILLION new projects and while the original Beatle fans are getting less in number i feel like there is plenty of interest from the next generations. If they aren't going to do separate boxes for every record what about doing a Movie box featuring A Hard Days Night, Help, Magical Mystery Tour & Yellow Sub? You could also include either the extra Get Back Footage or the totally remastered Let It Be movie to top of the set. What about releasing the Shea Stadium show using Mal to get the soundtrack music correct? How about their very first concert in Washington D.C. (which i STILL believe is one of the finest and most historical of their performances i've ever seen)? what about a release for 2024 - a 1964 box with ALL of the Ed Sullivan shows in video and audio, as well as the 5 records that made up the Top 5 on the April 4th 1964 charts along with A Hard Days Night and Beatles for sale? You could include a few posters and buttons that reflect the more of what Beatlemania was about. You cold re-release the I Want To Hold Your Hand as a companion single using the new mixes. More like the latest Who's next release which includes 10 cd's, a book, badges, posters. Anyway, i enjoyed hearing you all talk with Peter. I will be waiting for the next one should you have one. Cheers Tony

Great stuff, guys! Peter always amazes me at how generous he is with his answers, and that "Day Tripper" breakdown segment he sent you after the fact is such a perfect example of that.
The most revealing thing here for me is what he said about I Am the Walrus (and THANK YOU so much for asking him about that)... this makes Giles Martin's mix even more puzzling to me, because Peter reveals that they DID in fact successfully separate all the radio elements using MAL. And yet there are still elements present in the 2023 mix that as far as I can tell ARE NOT in the original, particularly that loud, intrusive symphonic thing that starts around 4 minutes 7 seconds.
I am even more confused now... where did Giles get that from, and why did he put it in the mix, when he clearly didn't even need it? I can't fathom he would just pull it out of a hat, which makes me think it must be from another alternate mono mix with different radio elements, but Peter seems to indicate they only did the MAL treatment on the one mix. Of course I'm all for hearing those alternate elements if they exist, but that should have been saved for the MMT box set... not thrown in this collection for a whole new generation of listeners who may have never heard the song before. It's tantamount to repainting a Picasso.
I'm assuming at some point Giles will explain himself on this one, until then I remain completely flummoxed.

I love this. Thank you. Interesting that Peter’s non-musician status may have influenced how things were separated. For example, there are clearly two guitars on track two of Day Tripper: John on rhythm, and George on the riff. Yet Peter talks about it as a single guitar track. Is this why it isn’t separated? I found it a mystery as to why some songs on Red have separated guitar tracks, and others don’t. This seems to explain it: if Peter and his staff are hearing them as one guitar part and not two, maybe that’s why the different parts are mixed as one on some tracks on Red.
Actually, it’s the same for Revolution: on Love Giles separated the main guitars, but on Blue they’re together. My guess is that Giles decided to work only with Peter’s stems, rather than the original multitrack parts.

It’s a good theory, but the problem is that (as I understand it) the separations are not done by Peter, his staff or other humans, but by the MAL program, based on the amount of material (as Peter explained) fed into it. So in theory, it has been “taught” John’s guitar sound and George’s - but if they’re both playing their Epiphone Casinos, it might conceivably have been confused.

All around fantastic! I am hoping that before any live box set gets released that Rubber Soul gets done first. I wonder what peter's thoughts would be about the Yellow Submarine Songbook release from 1999. I remember hearing Eleanor Rigby & Nowhere Man and they just blew my mind, they sounded miles better than anything else before them. Great show!!! I really wish that Universal/Disney had nothing to do with the Beatles. We would have had a great Get Back DVD set with bonus tracks. My only concern with the Red/Blue albums is that I feel there was absolutely no reason to make The colored vinyl sets so limited that now people have to pay double on Discogs or Ebay, it is just a shame. They should have made enough for everybody; and, as a box set there was nothing really box set about them. No book, no promo poster....aside from the mixing it's a huge let down calling it a box set. Respectfully I refuse to bend down to Discogs or Ebay and but the colored vinyl set or any other version of it.

He already told is in episode 355 - and again in this one -- as I understand it, it's not really Apple, it's Disney, who have the rights to both the streaming version and the DVD/Blu-ray, and therefore can dictate whether there's an extended cut. From their point of view, they've already compromised by allowing it to run 8 hours rather than the 2 hours they had contracted, and putting out a DVD and Blu-ray (with no extras) despite not wanting to put it out in a physical format at all. Personally, I think they're insane, and I've said so a number of times on the show since 2021, but if they won't listen to Peter, they're definitely not going to listen to us.

@@allankozinn192 That is what I meant, specifically who in [Disney] is preventing the Blu-Ray release of a Get Back Expended edition, complete with extra footage? Peter Jackson appeared on a Financial podcast some time ago and was urging fans to voice their support for a Director's cut of Get Back. My fear, judging from Jackson's comments, is that it won't be made available until a 10-year anniversary, which is an awful long wait. Possibly due to distribution rights issues, which I would have liked to have known the particulars about.

People could have had the streaming version free -- it was on dozens of websites, in some cases in 2160 quality, within days -- but were willing to buy the DVD or Blu-ray because they want a physical product, which Disney was initially against releasing at all, with or without extras. They may claim that the demand isn't there (on who-knows-what basis), but it's really about control. They seem to feel that so long as a physical product isn't available, they have greater control of the content. But they're deluding themselves.

    Regarding "Benign A.I.",
The whole conversation about needing the lowest generation cassette, and the 1/4" tape master... the benign thing we want tech to be able to do IS the dangerous thing.
Have we forgotten The Conversation (1971)?,
And the movie cliche since of using EQ (phase cancellation, sending the signal back onto itself to sum out harmonic ranges) and gain (extra stage of power, therefore dynamics) to "isolate things". The exact thing we're giddy about is the thing we don't want Spotify (who's business is user data) to go to lossless or h ires to be able to do. Spying!
I wanted basically the "smart"phone but I've had to avoid it because they're security vulnerabilities that can't be protected. I've been a long arguer for Hi Res digital audio, but I hate that it probably won't become user friendly until it's first used to spy on people. The file size issue might be what saves it from being useful for spying. Bluetooth's LDAC might be as dangerously close as we get, but Spleeter and M.A.L.. are not benign, certainly not if M.A.L. can tell the Beatles voices apart. The problem with Spleeter is/was the sound of digital squares where dynamics and harmonic resonance should be, and Get Back and then Revolver 2020 were the development on this tech, so... but, fun is never benign. Certainly developing art is never benign.

Regarding the myth that the third 1995 song was a secret, that is not the case. I first read about it in ICE magazine on release of the third Anthology. Ringo was quoted saying there was a third song that didn't work out for technical reasons. And I found this from the Dec 1995 page of Sound On Sound:
Quote: The three Beatles began work in February on a third unfinished Lennon demo. Contrary to press speculation, this song was not 'Grow Old With Me' but one which Lynne and Emerick recall being titled either 'Now And Then' or 'Miss You' - a track which Emerick expects the remaining Beatles to complete in the not too distant future. He says: "We did start work on it, but it was obviously unfinished from a writing point of view, so we thought we'd work on 'Real Love' which had a complete set of words. It'll need to be completed as a song before everybody decides what to do with it, and," he adds with a grin, "it's not hard to imagine who would finish writing it."

    • @allankozinn192
      @allankozinn192 11 месяцев назад

I don’t recall it ever being a myth that the third song was a secret, or that it was anything other than Now and Then. It was widely reported at the time - as you point out yourself, citing ICE (which I used to write for). Nor was there ever any mystery why they gave up on it, since John’s demo was available on the bootleg market. A number of people even tried to pass off fakes that they claimed were the Threetles’ working version. So I’m not sure why you say there was a myth that it was a mystery. However, there were four songs on the cassette Yoko gave them, and the fourth was Grow Old With Me, which they all felt was too mawkish.

Yes, correct, we all knew about Now and Then at the time of the Anthologies. It was never a secret. @@allankozinn192 I appreciate the reply. I called it a myth because I keep hearing on various Beatle podcasts that the public didn't know about the third song in 1995. Maybe I missed something --- it was a long interview, and my attention was distracted at times. No. The Star Club tapes are completely separate from the Tony Sheridan material.
Perhaps you are confused that for two songs, there are Star Club staff who get to come up on stage and sing a bit (if I recall correctly, it’s Horst Fascher a bouncer/manager at the Star Club, singing on Hallelujah, I Love Her So, and his brother/cousin Freddie, on Be Bop A Lu La, credited as “Herr Obber” (Mr. Waiter) by the Beatle that calls him to the stage).
Sheridan also performed in Hamburg at the time, and the Beatles backed him on some studio recordings (My Bonnie being the most well known) as well as other live performances at the Top Ten Club, but the Star Club tapes are the Beatles, not Sheridan.

Peter Jackson's Get Back is a wonderful contribution to the Beatles universe, and to the history of our culture in general. One of the best Beatles' products there's ever been, and perhaps the greatest by a third party. However, the video for Now and Then is a mixed experience. Some excellent footage, but too much dated looking cutting and pasting, with arms flailing around like they're attached to puppets. in the Hello Goodbye sections,, George in particular looks two-dimensional in his Pepper costume. Hopefully, Peter will have another look at the video, and replace the unnecessary and jarring goofing around (John on the podium looks clearly superimposed and silly with "his" arms waving about) and fix the wonkiest of the 1967 inserts. Instead of ignoring innovations in filmmaking, Peter could have optimised footage without resorting to completely fake Beatles created via CGI.

It's great that Peter is prepared to make not only one, but two, lengthy appearances on this, or any, Beatles podcast. Get Back was such a wonderful gift to Beates fans. And the Mal de-mixing technology he pioneered has opened up so many possibilities, including the great new Last Beatles Song, Now and Then. But, I'm sorry to be one of the few voices of negativity here, I really dislike the video. I love the Anthology footage (and lets hope it's a harbribger of things to come), and the ending is very moving. But the mood did not need 'lightening', certainly not with the importation of John's 'zany' antics which, I'm sorry, look foolish and dated. Some of the CGI looks amateurish too. No, love the song, love Peter, but hate the video.
