I remember watching this and thinking how different it sounded from their past work and thinking they were headed in a totally different direction. Not bad, just different! Strange to see it now, knowing in hindsight he was in the middle (end?) of that relationship nobody really knew about at the time.
Yea I've seen another interview where John describes that moment in the recording studio. They were recording Iris and all the string musicians came in, he said he told Robby "we have turned a corner man, there's no going back"
Oh this is so cool! Been looking for this interview for a while. No one has much info on this actual date but I’d think this was probably one of if not THE first performance of Iris ever!
@@baileyb4470 yeah, i'm like obsessed with finding it because there are hardly any iris performances that even remotely sound like the studio version where john properly goes for it, i know my dad saw it years and years ago and said it was unbelievable
I don't unfortunately. I have asked someone who has a larger collection and she's going to look for it next month. So, it might resurface at some point
Yea I'm guessing this is around April of 1998, when City of Angels was released. Carson asks if Iris will go on the album if it becomes a big hit, that made me smile. They had no clue how much success they were about to have
Yeah they were in tune with the band but man the strings just didn’t fit with the mix! Come to think of it though I don’t think they’d ever played with strings before
Awesome video with young Carson here. "if it becomes a big hit," it became HUGE. 😂

It's either this one or the Leno one, on the setlist website it says the Leno one was the first
@@Caspar_17 I wish someone had that one I’ve never seen it but I keep hearing how amazing it was

Any chance you have the performance of Iris on Leno?

can tell that's an early performance, they sound really out of tune
