In 2001, Cassidy was but a 19-year-old Philly rapper bubbling up through the ranks and was signed to Full Surface Records. Freeway, also from Philadelphia, had only recently joined Roc-a-fella's family, having parlayed a high school battle-rapping career into a membership in State Property after being noticed by Beanie Sigel. This legendary battle, hosted by Swizz Beatz in New York's Hit Factory studios allegedly came about after Jay-Z and Swizz placed bets on whose roster had better upcoming talent.
For five rounds, Cassidy and Freeway went at one another with rapid-fire rhymes, pre-written as they were. Cassidy and Freeway continue to be asked about the battle to this very day, though it happened well over a decade ago. - "25 Greatest Rap Battles of All Time"

Eh; ruined the art if I'mma be real. This shit is boring. Used to be Bars, Punches, Flow, and how you mixed all of that together.
Now it's just "bars." It's less interesting; go watch Eyedea on Blaze Battles. How is this a "Better" format than that.
You can get away with things that would never work over a beat when it's acapella; those things would have been viewed as mistakes [because they are] back in the day.

This is a legendary moment in rap history. Rocafella felt they were on top of the world after that hot 97 freestyle and being that this was before social media they had no idea who Cassidy was. Plus they never heard someone rap like him before. He would have melted anyone they put in front of him INCLUDING Jay Z.
Only thing I'll add is that all those Philly cats knew exactly who Cass was. He was battling nightly on the radio in Philly since he was around 15. Jay might not have known who he was but the Philly cats on the Roc absolutely did. Free knew he was cooked before it started. I actually give him credit for competing nonetheless.

One of the most legendary battles. I normally like freestyles with a beat. But this is still 1000 better then the battles they are doing now, because it still stays a rhythm flow to it....no unnecessary pauses.
Legit off the top freestyles are majority wise sloppy trash. Theres a reason battlers write their bars. Cass nor Freeway spit anything off the top. Both came with writtens. And today's battle scene is 100x better than this garbage. URL, RBE and KOTD battles destroy mediocre showings like this. Cass lost all 3 of his major battles in the modern era. He's trash and can't compete with today's battlers.
@@whoknows4379 the only people who think cass lost are url super fans. The consensus is cass beat disaster and goodz. I personally have ars losing to cass because ars got boo'd more and had to do a bunch of antics. But I will say cass might of lost that one.
