Bodycam: Man Tried Murdering Cop and College Students with Stolen Tractor, Police Say

- Bodycam footage allegedly shows a golf course greenskeeper ramming a police cruiser with a stolen tractor after a pursuit on May 4. Key West police said Ethan Layne allegedly drove the tractor through a college dorm building in an attempt to kill two students before leading officers on a chase. Authorities said, “Layne went to the college with the specific intent of killing two individuals.” Layne was arrested without further incident after ramming the cop's car. He was charged with aggravated assault, grand theft of a vehicle, attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, and two more counts of attempted murder, among other charges. He is obviously in a very dark place in his head. Extremely self-sabotaging. Unfortunately, often these extreme mental health cases don't get help until it's too late because of the failing medical system and "treating" every problem with police force. So crazy stuff like this unfortunately happens way too often. Obviously this doesn't excuse his actions and police force + prison is appropriate once it happens. Just saying the system is not set up for preemptive measures to prevent crazies from hitting boiling point and to release pressure, so it will probably happen again in a few weeks with another person in another place.

It depends. If he has no criminal history and takes a plea deal, he’ll be out in 25-30 years or so. If he takes it to trial, he’ll get life.

In my career I saw only one instance of a successful insanity defense in a case, one where I arrested the murderer at the scene, literally red handed. His lawyer argued that the suspects use of crack cocaine rendered him unable to understand right from wrong while he stabbed wife 52 times. While I was booking him he made statements that led me to believe he did indeed know what he was doing. Another aspect of the judge's decision is that it flew in the face of caselaw regarding voluntary intoxication.
Bundy was a topic of discussion at a homicide school in Orlando a number of years ago and even though he was 'diagnosed' with a number of mental mental conditions, not one doctor could testify that he didn't know what he was doing was wrong nor could they prove that he was unable to cooperate in his defense at trial.
Again, Oldschool got it right.
The way our legal system works now he probably will get some lawyer to plea the whole case down. Would not be surprised if he actually only spends a small time behind bars.
