He was born and raised in America his parents were Irish Immigrants, and his mom was a champion Irish Step dancer, he became a middleweight boxer with five knockouts before he decided in the early 80s to do Irish dancing full-time. He was asked to come up with something for the intermission of Eurovision and helped create Riverdance.
Just incredible dancing. The first time I saw this I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. The control, the athleticism is out of this world. The hair, I love. Actually that style for men or women was the 80’s. And for what they’re doing here it works perfectly.
Jeeze...your first comment is about hairstyle...?!?! Seriously?!? This is one of the most amazing performances ever - it blew me away then, and still does. But you think his hair is outdated. Right.
I remember watching this as it happened. Usually the Eurovision interval act is something to be endured, or avoided as you go and put the kettle on or something, but this just blew my girlfriend and I away. At the end when the applause broke out we stood and clapped as well and just looked at each other like we'd seen something extraordinary. It really was a special moment of live tv that was totally unexpected.
This was such a moment, I must've been 5 at the time and I remember it, the crazy reaction and all. I think if you've got any Irish blood in your veins it sturrs something up inside, does me.
During the end when the camera pans across the audience there is 1 woman in a red dress Her name is Mary Robinson In 1994 she was the President of Ireland. The first of the only 2 Female Presidents to ever hold the title.
It's too bad the video you chose skipped the vocals. That sets the mood for the whole thing. Not only that but there are captions that tell a bit of the story of how RD came to be the phenomenon it was.
there is a style of dance called sean nos meaning old style in irish its much mor flamboint as dancers use there upper body just as much as there feet you should check this out
it represents the river ... every dancer is a drop of water that become a trickle and then come together in a dance to form the river and they become rapids at times and meander down the mountain to the sea the river gets bigger, wider, and louder as it gains more trickles as it dances down the mountain.
this wasn't part of the competition, but the interval act usually is used to portray some local culture, and since that years contest was in Ireland, they decided to showcase this, it became one of the most succesfull things ever to be featured in the song contest.
It was an interval act, after all acts perform, they need time to collect all the votes, so an interval act is in place to keep the audience entertained. The Eurovision Dance Contest also used to exist, but ran for only 2 years
@@ImStevan True indeed, based on the '81 interval act. I remember watching when riverdance came on and I yawned, usually the interval act was something boring - my mouth stayed open the whole time lol. It was mindblowing
This is still the best interval act ever in Eurovision
👍
It'll never be surpassed, makes you proud to be Irish!
I agree. But this weapon didn't even bother looking at it from the beginning. what a tool!
@@LegionGames2076 why didn't start from the beginning...the irish choir
Laura Pausini in the first act of the latest Eurovision was pretty awesome, too. But, maybe Riverdance takes the biscuit.
The audience reaction described just how everyone who witnessed that live felt at that moment. Gobsmacked.

You should of started it from the beginning, the haunting music at the beginning makes the whole performance more magical.
Yes Indeed!
Should HAVE. But yes, you're right.
Michael Flatley holds the world record at 35 taps per second.
Not any more, James Devine currently holds it with 38 taps per second.
To be honest I love his hair, and such talent from him. They were ALL incredible!!!!
First time I saw River Dance I lost my mind. Incredible, absolutely incredible. Never seen anything like it before.

To bad they cut of the beginning entrance of the Choir singing by the river Liffey.
Note,,,,, the two main dancers come from CHICAGO.
They expected a standing ovation, but they didn't expect what they got.

Believe their song that year was My Little Horse.
No-one remembers who actually won the contest except those who were there.... & I was one of them!
Absolutely amazing ☘️

This amazing talent & you talk about the HAIR ???? !!!!
why did you leave out the start - unbelievable.

I remember this::: love Eurovision - this was fantastic 😊😊😊😊

I definitely will!
the ringlets and puffy hair are a traditional part of the costume
no, it isn't .. The CCE made it a part of the outfit. I was a champion Irish dancer in the early 80s and this curly hair (wig) thing didn't exist.

Was so proud to be Irish watching this. Amazing, even now so many years later
Shame this is the shortened version, cutting out the choral intro completely!
what a shame you only saw the second half. it's a beautiful moment in time so it is. you should watch the whole piece.
What happened to singing at the start of this is this a shorter version it looks like the same one but without the singing
Riverdance is almost 29 years ago, next week, I was 21[ going on 22 ] at the time. 💕🇦🇺
Why did you cut out the start of it
It's a shame you chopped off that beautiful choral opening.
They dont dance with their hair dude.
You barely reacted
you cut the start of it...really portant piece
I did actually go back and watch the beginning.
A mullet haircut will taint a man for life, even decades after he last had one.
You missed the start...river dance needs a debut and a finish
Yes his name is Michael Flatley. Brilliant x
That video is missing 3 mins at start . Wtf
Actually I thought Michael Flatley looked like the 80's era more in that shirt and with the hair.
If you can dance like that you kind of get to do what you like with your hair.
Magic and easily blows away the rubbish that Eurovision has now become
So Eurovision is more than just singing? What other genres of dance haven been done in the competition? I’d love to see you react to more dance!
