    I was 20 and being a big Eurovision Fan I saw this as it happened. I had never seen anything so gobsmackingly brilliant in all my life! If I remember rightly I had to pull my jaw up off the floor and the next day I ran out and got the soundrack. It still gives me chills now.

    I remember so clearly watching this on TV. I was about to go and get a cup of coffee (as one does in the interval) but heard this start and had to come back and watch. I was so gripped, amazed and overwhelmed, just like the audience. Truly an evening never to be forgotten.

    Its weird thing to understand, in the 80’s as a Irish kid I attended waking Irish wakes, where the sons and daughters of neighbors went to England for work and the neighbors would chuck what little English currency they had into a pot to help the traveling neighbors. In the 90’s the Irish soccer team had a English manger who woke the country up and we realized we where an entity worth recognizing. When the euro vision came about we watched the mid show and our jaws dropped. It was a celebration of been Irish and that year, nobody knew who won the competition, but we all knew who Riverdance where!

    It seems that Ms. Baker has branched from reviewing comic acts to reviewing stage dancing. A good choice was made for the initial one. What is noteworthy, in addition to the synchronicity is that the dancers kept their torsos upright and relatively motionless while their limbs were active, especially the legs. Imagine how much discipline and practice it takes to achieve that flawlessly.

    • @123YMR
      @123YMR Год назад +2

      Yes a lifetime of practice, sometimes starting from as young as 4 years old. Traditional Irish dancing is straight arms by the side and straight body.

      @@Rosiecrossley1 Well that is disappointing. Did he steal the style or was he the style? It seems to me that if Flatley wasn't the genius behind the show, Riverdance should have been fine without him. • @weeardguy
      @weeardguy Год назад +2

      The Irish dance world basically didn't really differ from what it is today: you had Irish dance competitions all over the world, just like you had World Championships on an annual basis. I don't know about outside the US (and possibly Australia) but the US had a vast number of competitions and though I expect Europe to have a few as well, I can not believe they are as widespread as they are today.
      But the thing is that you wouldn't normally know about such competitions if you were not 'in to this world'.
      But basically, there already was a select group of top-level dancers that would win the important competitions and thus would have very little trouble getting to this level, in particular Jean Butler and Michael Flatley, who both already won basically everything they could have won, with Michael being the first American to win the World Championships. The only difference is the length of the performance: traditional Irish dances on competitions usually last something like 30 to 60 seconds, as endurance-wise, anything longer is hardly possible. Paired with the synchronised dancing which is far, far harder than I expected, (I started Irish dance when I was 23 and I'm still dancing now, age 35) is what makes this all the more spectacular to watch.

    I think pausing it and missing the huge crowd’s reaction at the end took away from it as this performance had a huge impact in Ireland. I was working in a very busy pub on the night and didn’t appreciate what was going on until the end when everybody in the packed pub jumped up and started clapping and cheering. Unreal. It was so big that, RTE, the state broadcaster,had to repeat the performance due to demand the next night.

    Georgia , good commentary. The whole performance was based on the old traditional Irish Dance from Jean and the new style from Michael. Traditionally, Irish dancers were always taught to have their arms straight down by their sides. The transformation is in the show.

    @janfitzgerald3615 Год назад +4

    I’ve seen the full show live three times over the years, it never gets old. A lot of people think it’s the same as tap, there are differences. Unlike Irish dancers, tappers tend to dance on the melody of a song rather than the downbeat, and while a tap dancer definitely uses their heels, they do not rely on them quite as heavily as Irish dancers do. Tappers also often dance solo; and Irish dancers more often dance in groups. Getting the synchronization with other dancers in your group correct is definitely one of the harder parts of step dancing. Tap is believed to have been born from a combination of step dancing and African American slaves dances.

    • @weeardguy
      @weeardguy Год назад

      Whether an Irish dancer more often dances in groups is slightly debatable: though you can dance in a group in school, this does not mean you interact with eachother: usually everyone dances for themselves (especially at competitions). Only ceili's (look up the word for pronounciation) (groupdances) are dances where dancers interact with eachother, the rest is all solo.
      The major difference is that a tap dancer uses the whole body, while an Irish dancer is not allowed to move the arms at all and they should be kept rigid, next to the torso, with clenched fists.
