- A small town in Iceland created a “floating” crosswalk to slow traffic instead of conventional speed bumps.
The traffic control project is a road safety experiment conceived by the Ísafjörður environment officer Ralf Trylla. Trylla was inspired by similar “floating” pedestrian crossings in India he spotted on the internet. “I was looking for other possibilities and different solutions to slow down traffic other than the regular speed bumps,” he explains.
Spoiler alert - the 3D effect optical illusion is achieved through a clever painted design.

Luna McLean I'm not so sure... where I live, we use stop signs. They do a pretty good job of regulating traffic where there aren't any lights. What is the point of speed bumps (or painted 3d crosswalks) at an intersection, when you can have a stop sign, and really make people slow down, without hurting a bus driver's back

There's a little town in the French Pyrenees that has a great way of doing this: There's a traffic light, and if you travel down main street too fast, the light automatically goes red.

Or put in laws that cars must stop at pedestrian crossings if someone is waiting to cross/crossing. That's how it works in QLD Australia, and it's pretty effective.

Overall, this idea is cool, but I don't know how anyone could think for a second that this would work to solve any of the problems they mentioned. I bet the bus drivers would love it, but that's about where the idea stops working.

This is nonsense. Once people know what's going on they will become immune to it and drive just as bad as they do today. If you want something useful, try the speed-sensitive speed bumps. You won't feel them at low speed but your car would be flying if you went over them at high speed.

adtc those aren’t exactly great long term... they’re essentially a bag filled with liquid, and it has all the problems that come with them, and a speed bump is meant for people to notice it and realize there are potential hazards ahead, more than it’s really meant to strictly slow people down... the point of this crosswalk is they go “holy shit, that things floating... oh, it’s a crosswalk” and realize people may be crossing and be more alert
Daniel Simonds maybe children on bicycles, I don’t think many people do that. There’s a reason they’re posted up around construction sites and in residential areas where speeders are prominent, and studies show they work to an extent

This will solve nothing. Speed bumps never stopped my vehicle from flying through them, only cars. I use the speed bumps as a way to get some air.
I've tried that a few times. They move quick. Had some crack-head block me into a parking lot so I gunned it. Let's just say she moved and was within a fraction of an inch of going over my windshield. Been waiting to find one of these road blocks I been hearing about.

I think it's very similar sound to of the song Midnight City by M83
I create these kind of optical illusions for a living and they only really work when seen through a camera and only from a small, set particular angle. As you have two eyes giving you depth perception you aren't fooled by these types of illusions in real life so it will do little to slow a driver down other than out of curiosity as what the purpose of the strange road markings are most likely causing them to take their eyes off everything else around them. Also people will be more at risk as they'll be stood in the street with their backs to oncoming traffic trying to take photos of their friends on the crossing.

I foresee a lot of fender benders where someone takes their eyes off the road for a second and when they look at the road again they see the "floating" barrier and slam on their brakes causing a tailgater behind them to slam into them.
I'd slow down just to look at it some more.

Would be absolutely useless if every single sidewalk was painted like this. What would actually work however, is to paint on potholes / dips / random rubbish on the road that the boyracers in their low profile cars would normally want to avoid.

But there are 2 problems: 1. Once the driver knows what it is, they're less likely to stop the next time and 2. It would confuse the driver the first time they see it.
