    The speed difference of A3 to A5 is BOTH due to the nose shape and due to the more efficient engine FAN (that draws less power from the engine (the A3 Fan eats 17% of the engine power just for that) , and that can be used because the longer nose allow for better natural heat dispersion).

  • @kailae3269
    @kailae3269 6 лет назад +10

    BTW, the A5 with the U17 modification was later renamed the Fw190 F-3.

  • @Slahinki
    @Slahinki 6 лет назад +15

    According to techincal data, the A3 and A5 should have the same top speeds. The only major difference is that on the A5 the BMW 801 D-2 was moved forwards by inserting a 160mm "plug" between the rear of the engine cowling and the fuselage. This had no effect on performance, though it and the other minor changes to equipment increased the loaded weight by 5kg, from 3850kg to 3855kg. Numbers and stuff are from Focke-Wulf Fw 190 Volume One: 1938-1943 by J. Richard Smith and Eddie J. Creek.

      @tiagodagostini 6 лет назад +4

      The engine fan also was changed into one more efficient that "wasted"less power than the older one. that means more Engine power used to pull the plane.

    • @ParkRangerStan

      Yes, looking at actual German historical testing during 1942-43 the top speed results are basically the same. Test results of course varied for each aircraft from test to test. The most consistent top speed result for each aircraft was ~408-410 mph @ 6300-6700 m (again, varied by test). To be conservative you could say between 400-410 mph. The A-5 was basically just an A-3 with better ground attack capabilities. That said, the curves are a bit different, and it looks as though the A-5 might have been ~10 mph faster on the deck @ 1.42 ata. Could be a fluke in testing, or maybe it represents a true performance gap. Who knows.

    Very informative, Sheriff. Some points below, based on Wikipedia-level research which is perhaps not the ultimate in authority and scholarship. Bearing in mind that the justification for abandoning further development of the Stuka was that the Fw-190 was to replace it, essentially substituting an up to date fighter-bomber for the obsolete dive bomber in the ground attack roll.
    1. 1-gun pods (adds 2) - The MG FF is a lighter and simpler gun (blowback operated). Reportedly 26.3 KG per gun. The trade-off is lower fire rate and lower velocity.
    2. 2-gun pods (adds 4) - The MG 151/20 is more complex and much heavier. Reportedly 42 KG per gun. So, twice the guns but three times the weight (not including ammo). Hence the greater speed and roll-rate penalty, probably accurately modeled.
    3. They essentially give you the choice between three different versions of the A-5. The default version appears to be the A-5/U3, a light fighter-bomber (Jagdbomber, "Jabo"). Second version - MG 151/20 gun pods - might be the A-5/U12, bomber interceptor. (Except you should lose the inboard wing-mounted cannons. . .) The version with both centerline and wing-mounted bombs. . . Does not appear in Wikipedia. Game developers may have "adapted" the A-5/U8 substituting bombs for under-wing drop tanks.
    So perhaps some creativity was exercised. But I have to sympathize - the "Axis" needs better ground attack to consistently have a chance to win in multiplayer. Whether actual players will use it. . . Dogfighting is more fun. Personally I would rather hit ground targets with a cumbered-up Fw-190 than a Sturmovik. I love the Sturmovik, but typically un-escorted it is cannon fodder in multiplayer.

    I can literally feel that A5 is more sluggish loss more energy when you try to pull g. the adjustable engine cooling slits can contribute some speed increasing marginally. but never test out how much speed you can get from it.

    Hey Sherrif, it is faster because it has slightly more horsepowers in IL-2 afaik. There are many different sources, some are quoted to say they had the same, but some say that was different. There were a few different versions out there, and never underestimate the German mechanic in the actual field.

    • @HerraTohtori
      @HerraTohtori 6 лет назад +1

      German (and other) aircraft were operated with a wide gamut of engine settings at different times of the war, depending on what kind of settings the RLM considered acceptable balance between reliability and performance. Especially the Bf 109 - both the DB 601 and DB 605 powered variants - had different engine power at different times of the war, depending on how much manifold pressure they were officially rated for. Minor improvements in production and sourcing of certain parts, such as spark plugs, and some tweaks in engine settings (ignition timings etc.) solved a lot of initial reliability problems, which eventually led to higher approved power ratings.
      I can't recall off the top of my head, but I would not be at all surprised if the Fw 190 A series with the BMW 801 radial engine also had different manifold pressure ratings at different times of war, so different power settings can be correct even if the engine is basically the same thing.

    • @SheriffsSimShack
      @SheriffsSimShack  6 лет назад

      The settings in ata and rpm remained the same from a3 to a5. And what a surprise to see you commenting here right now. I just watched your.... il2 take off.

    • @HerraTohtori
      @HerraTohtori 6 лет назад

      Ah, I see. Were the ratings for the BMW 801 really kept constant throughout those early variants? Considering the extremely wide variety of ratings issued for the DB 600 series engines at different times of war (for Friedrichs and Gustavs alike), I find that surprising!
      Also, hah, that IL-2 take-off was so funny how it just dropped back to its wheels and rolled away like nothing happened. *Totally* meant to do that... :D

    hello, can you do a how to on how you set up head tracking? I got the open track with a PS3 camera and head clip. I am finding it to be a complete gongshow to set up, not exactly user friendly. Im ready to send it back. At first it was just wrong curve set up. When I tried looking to the back of my cockpit, the view would suddenly drop down to the seat at a certain point. Anyhow I got the curve set almost perfect and then of course it couldnt still work. I can see the view moving nice and smooth exactly how I want it, but the screen is now flashing constantly with a view of straight forward. Arg

      @hon0p 6 лет назад

      My apologies if my comments offended you and/or Sheriff himself. It was really not my intention. To illustrate what I mean, please look at 10min, I just have trouble to believe the inaccuracy ("jerky pitch up/down") we see was intended. To me this is typical to non linear setting, either intended or not like in the X52. Anyway I really like his video, and I think I read somewhere he use a simple T16000. So I thought we could do something for him. Please see here to get the idea :
      www.reddit.com/r/hotas/comments/777r20/virpil_mongoos_t50_dual_controller_review/dol3gp3/?st=j91fwl5x&sh=48a7efd4

      hon0p ah that. I was jerking around because I had trouble to judge his movement and I didn't want to collide. Additionally it was hard to see him. And once again my js setting is linear and sine I use my current js I have no problems aiming. My accuracy is between 10-20% which I don't see that often . But no no offense taken. There is no question that a large stick is even better. But there is the question of money and first and foremost space. The reason why your comment is perceived that way is cause you judge my aiming or what by one or two moments. This is a little weird. But everything is fine. Cheers

    Are you certain the information in this is still up to date? I’ve done some research recently and I’ve found that I can reliably find sources that show the 190 A5 only just as fast as the A3 and slower in fact at higher altitudes. The turn rate of the A3 is also substantially better compared to the A5 according to the sources I’ve looked at. For the last few months I’ve found that the A3 is superior to the A5 and that there is little reason to fly the A5 other than instrument improvements and load out options. If this information is out of date you should up date it, it’d be nice to have a definitive answer and if it is actually still update could I see your sources?

    • @SheriffsSimShack
      @SheriffsSimShack  10 месяцев назад +1

      I should be accurate to some degree. The A-5 still has the Covers on the outlets and is more aerodynamic. It might be true that the a-3 is more manoeuvrable. That would be surprising since its lighter and probably has the favorable center of gravity for turning.
      All in all it wouldn't affect how I would advise to fly the planes.
      Videos for games aren't going to be 100% accurate for all eternity. I sadly don't have the the time to update these. Yak1 1b, 109 F-4 also would deserve some words on changes. However I still think that the videos are accurate enough to help players to understand the aircraft.
