You did not dissappoint, Im in the middle of this job right now and didnt wanna mess up the clutch fork and retaining clips part soive been looking for someone to cover exactly that and you did. Thank you!
damn, you are a dedicated stick shift guy, i would have AW4 swapped it the second time i had to pull it, lol. my love affair with stick shifts ended in my 30s after many broken T5 transmissions and various parts street and drag racing and ive never looked back and im 53 now. i was running toward the TV trying to catch your falling trans, that sucked. well you got all new stuff now so hopefully it lasts👍.
We definitely lucked out. The only damage that I found was the yoke. I got the truck in 1995, so pretty much everything has been "fixed" multiple times at this point. Thanks for watching!
Ironically, almost all of our vehicles have manuals, except for the hot rods. It's just so much easier to stick an auto in rather than swap to a manual and as you found, it's also easier on parts!
Best conversion video I've found online, great job and thank you!!! Will this work to convert all internal slaves on AX-15 s (YJ for example), or just the commanche?
They should all be the same. Advanced Adapter shows the same part number for 89-93 YJ and XJ. You might check Advance Adapters website to verify. Glad you found this helpful
I am also in the middle of this job. Where the pivot ball threads into the Bell housing, it screws flush against housing, and then nut (a nut ?) #12,#13, goes on backside of bell housing onto stud, backside of pivot ball ? And I tend to over complicate things. 😂 The diagram doesn’t show it going on the back. But it does kind of look like it is separated by the bell housing. Or do you screw the nut on the pivot ball stud, and then screw all of that to the bell housing? In your video I don’t see a nut on the back of the housing.
cdn.xjjeeps.com/pdf/en-us/1994-to-1996-parts-catalog.pdf In the factory part diagram, (page 103 in the link), it appears that the factory setup is for the ball to just screw in. I don't know what installing the nut would hurt. Looking back at the AA instructions, I do see a "ball pivot nut" listed in the parts list. My guess is that it is just a failsafe to keep the nut from loosening? I wish their instructions were more detailed.
I have owned my 1992 Comanche for the past 26 years. I have the AW4 and would like to swap for the AX15. Novak Conversions sell the AX15, and if you tell them the year, they will drill the correct hole pattern. I have the AX15 in my 1992 Cherokee, and the power, cooling and gas mileage is much better than the automatic. Glad to see your keeping your Comanche going. I noticed you have the cowl intake. Do you find that it is loud?👍
Thanks for watching, we went with the Advance Adapters because of the cost savings. The cowl intake does make some noise, but it just adds to all of the other old truck noises 😁
We've got a Ford explorer 8.8 rear end with disc breaks with no hight sensing setup. Here's a link to the walk around video that shows it a little bit ruclips.net/video/4M4Ad6moe0E/видео.html
I’m getting ready to do this on my Comanche. Could you give a little more detail on the clutch fork and pivot ball setup you were having trouble with? What was the issue?
The orientation was my question, the fork would fit in two different ways. I confirmed the proper orientation with Advance Adapters, I believe that I covered it in the video. There's also info here. comancheclub.com/topic/70337-advance-adapters-ax15-transmission-and-external-slave-kit-link-to-youtube-video/
I converted it to the AX15 about 20 years ago, so I don't remember every detail. I did use the crossmember from the AX15 Jeep and had to move the crossmember to another set of holes on the frame. The blanks were there, but needed to be threaded. Hopefully, that's what you were asking. No modifications were needed on this go around as far as the mounting went.
Hey man I got a few questions. We just picked up an 89 Comanche and I’m not sure what trans it has. But I’m thinking it’s a BA-10? The guy that sold it to us said the “slave cylinder is bad”. My questions are: -What year of ax15 do I need to bolt in the 89 Comanche? -will a AW4/Np231 from a 2001 XJ bolt up to the Comanche? -how hard
I believe that any year AX15 will work. The later ones will already have the desirable external throw out bearing. TJ ones will also fit, but you need to redrill the rear housing, like I had to with the Advance Adapters unit. You should have the BA-10, but I'd definitely look at photos and make sure yours hasn't already been swapped. Not sure on the 2001 XJ AW4, I don't know about the computer control system in those or if it would move things enough to need a different driveshaft/shafts?
I just saw this, might help you with the Auto questions. comancheclub.com/topic/72730-1991-ax15-4x4-swapped-with-1998-cherokee-aw4/?fbclid=IwAR3fq5IyCHqFdfVUimzkm3Ii-5d94ObK7Gi44N6N2Ud_xP3EaNMGziH_w_Q
I believe it was Precision fc69907. The crankshaft is stepped and this one is a larger diameter and sits slightly farther out. It's listed for a 94+ . I just use a cheap puller from Harbor Freight or Amazon usually, but I've tried the bread trick too.
There is also a bushing that fits into the original smaller hole that's supposed to work. dorman PN 690-042, fits a 1974 CJ5 with a 304. I haven't tried that one myself.
@@campoutwestus for the precision bearing that includes the outer bushing and the inner bearing ? Also, how did the outer bigger diameter bearing out? Just with a puller?

Have you converted your rear brakes to Disc's, or are you still using drum brakes and the Height sensing set-up in the rear?

Why did you go with a standard transfer case chain and not a wide chain and 6 pinion planetary?
The standard components have lasted over 30 years and the chain was still functioning, so I didn't see much sense in changing.
Did you have to do anything to the crossmember to get the new transmission in a bit?

What pilot bearing did you use?
I believe that it's PN fc69907. The crank is stepped and it fits in the outer location.
Do you wanna sell your old trans and new bearing retainer that you have left over ?
I sold the retainer, I'm holding on to the trans in case I decide to manual swap the XJ in the future. Thanks for checking though.
