What does the entire Universe look like? ...using cereal

  • The scale of the Universe might seem too big to grasp, what does the Universe even look like? What do you picture when you hear that word? Galaxies? Stars? Empty space? It can all seem so endless and overwhelming, so I made this video to try and fix that. This is a journey to the edge of the Universe and back, in a way that you hopefully don't lose all sense of scale. All to find an image of the Universe that's simple, relatable and you can even hold in your hands. So I used cereal!
    If anyone would like to support this project of mine further I've just setup a Patreon account where I'll be posting ideas, updates, behind the scenes and early access as I work on the next videos. One day I hope to be making these full time and much more regularly so any support is greatly appreciated:
    / epicspaceman
    For those looking for a little more detail before embarking on this adventure, this video is a close look at our neighbourhood of the Universe, called The Local Group and my pitch that it's the most logical image of the Universe on a grand scale that we have. The Local Group can still be a little overwhelming and the images out there of it are a little uninspiring, so I've tried to make it as simple as possible while still maintaining accuracy and scale.
    So! Step one of exploring the Universe is to turn all the galaxies into cereal, if you're going on a long trip, you're going to need snacks...
    P.S. I should probably mention a couple of limitations of the video and it's depiction of the Universe. While I've gone to great lengths to make the exact positions and sizes of the galaxies in The Local Group correct. The rest of the visible Universe, while accurate in size has a great many more galaxies than I've shown, partly because my computer would explode if I tried to simulate the hundreds of Billions of galaxies in the visible Universe! I've only got around 300,000 here as I recall. Also, the spread of galaxies in the Universe is a bit more uniform at full scale too than mine I believe. For the camera moves I've used most of these galaxies would be too small to see but it's probably best to mention this is more of an artistic simulation beyond the galaxies of The Local Group. There to emphasise the clumps and threads of the spread of galaxies.

I feel it helps pull me into the story you're telling and keeps me hanging on and looking forward to what you'll say next. I like your pacing too-provides just the right amount of time to absorb the information and concepts. My favorite part is definitely the visual aesthetic. Thank you Marie, that's very kind and an incredibly helpful comment. I'm really pleased you enjoyed the calm narration, I wanted it to be quite a peaceful experience and journey, rather than overly energetic as that would have felt like I was trying to be someone else. Really pleased you liked the aesthetic too, inspiration is from a variety of areas: The starkness and moon shots of the Apollo landings, the grand scales and cinematography of Interstellar, anything dark, neon or anamorphic was Blade Runner (BR is always my favourite aesthetic), Tron Legacy and Space Odyssey 2001 for the spacship room and there's a touch of recent Marvel films for the flying epic spaceman and vibrant colours. Sometimes I have to make a compromise on the style because I need to be able to see something small and bright or dark that's floating. Hope that hleps!

      Thank you, really appreciate that. My goal really is to make the kind of video that I’d like to see and what I want my kids to see when their older, so I want it to take all the wonderful things out there and make them so accessible that years later someone can pick up a couple of pieces of cereal or think of that pen on Everest or a finger in the United States and remember how it works and share it with whoever they’re with. So it’s so great that you’ve described just that too and have enjoyed those things I’ve tried to put together. That’s the plan going forward too, to make all these places and concepts accessible to anyone regardless of background and hopefully spark some interest in science and wonder in kids and adults alike. Cheers!

    Damn bro, this is crazy. Finally a solid approach to interest people about the universe. People are not even aware how gigantic the universe actually is. If more people were aware of the size of the universe, they would start to realize that there is a strong chance that other species exist outside of our small planet. Actually, in my opinion, it's silly to think that creatures outside of our small planet do not exist. Just because we haven't seen them with telescope yet, doesn't mean they are not there, living their own lives, developing their own technology...

      Thanks! I think at some point we’ll probably find some simple life somewhere like Europa and for the people born after that date, it will be completely normal that alien life exists and it will be hard to convince them of a world where that was unusual. In the same way planes in the sky are just considered normal but would melts the brains of someone on the 1800s. Glad you enjoyed it!

      Thank you so much! I’m not no, I’m a filmmaker and very keen amateur that’s passionate about science and space and how to communicate them in new and interesting ways. I had to do a lot of research on The Local Group so I could explain and plot the galaxies and that’s one of my favourite parts about the process, learning enough about a specific subject to be able to explain it accurately but in non traditional ways. Plus checking the maths a lot!

    • @EpicSpaceman
      @EpicSpaceman  2 года назад +6

      Thank you! It has indeed taken ages and glad you're finally getting to see it! For the calculations I spent about a week putting together an excel spreadsheet of all the galaxies in the Local Group that there is data for and doing a lot of excel maths to convert their sizes and positions into x,y,z positions to put into my computer program called Blender. There aren't actually many images out there of The Local Group so it was really fascinating just for me, zooming and rotating around our local galaxies.

At some point we’ve got to be content with how much we get to see in a lifetime and we’re so lucky we’re living in the part of our timeline where we take an image like the Ultra Deep Field or a black hole for the first time, that only happens once in forever!
