I personally loved My Sister, the Serial Killer, but I think it’s quite different from your ‘usual’ mystery/ thriller. I don’t necessarily think I would put it in that category. I’m curious to see what you think.

It's great to push yourself out of your comfort zone with your reading, you often get nice surprises that way! A lot of books I've picked up with zero or low expectations have become some of my favourites. Fantasy is still my favourite genre but it's good to mix things up!

I feel weirdly personally invested in you liking Red, White and Royal Blue. I think I like romance a lot more than you (low bar though lol), but I honestly think the book is really well written - the politics, the character building, family relations, and overall writing is really good. Really hoping you like it, for your sake too (I always have so much awe when you read books you don't think you'll like, I could NEVER). Good luck with the challenge this year!

I really hope it’s not as bad as it might look with the amount of people voting for a book and the amount of people who have read them. As far as I understand it because the voting happens in three rounds every reader technically has three votes per category, so if Night House has 21k rating it could get 63k votes if everyone who rated it voted for it in every round. Also if you read a book and don’t give it a rating you will not be counted among the ratings statistics. I am not saying the people didn’t vote for books they haven’t read, but I don’t think the majority do that.

Yes! I went to vote on Goodreads, but I only voted in one category because I read only one of the books mentioned! I did not want to vote on books I haven't read because I don't know anything about them. I couldn;t say if they were a winner or not. Voting in the Goodreads award is just a way to vote for the author's name you recognize and they automatically win!

I just want to recommend the Mercy Thompson series which had book 11 in the fantasy category. Despite 11 plus books it’s a great urban fantasy series with great characters/plot/world building that’s easy to devour (I can get through the whole series in about a week)
I liked it from book 1 but it definitely improves with each instalment so even if you don’t care for the first book much (which some don’t as it’s not the best) they’re such quick reads it’s easy to read and get to when they start getting amazing (which are most of the books imo)

I decided to challenge myself to read the top 10 debut novels. I've read 9/10, waiting on the last one from the library. From the top 20 I've actually read 3 more, so 12 total. I do recommend red white and royal blue, it's fun in a fan fiction kind of way. I don't think it should have won debut though, I think A Woman is No Man by Etaf Rum was the best of the top 10, so I recommend reading that. Other 5 stars for me from that category were Queenie and Fleishman is in Trouble, so I think you should give those a try!

Ninth house was disappointing to me! The huntress is a good read historical fiction is my jam so I love books like that and its hard for me not to gravitate towards them! On the come up is good and if you like the hate you give, dear Martin is also amazing told from a guy's perspective. I just put three books on hold because you reminded me I need to read them. I agree that the voting system for the Goodreads best is rigged. I won't vote if I haven't read many or any in a category as I don't feel like I am informed or read enough to do so so others just voting for certain authors is infuriating to me. And my goal is always 100 too and I think this year I might make it there as I will hit my goal of 90 this weekend for sure.

Five Feet Apart didn’t become a movie. It started as a movie and they novelized it. On principle I won’t read it because of that. But... hopefully you will enjoy it!

This is how you lose the time war has a ff romance in it. So as you said you wanted to read more of ff, I think you might enjoy that.

I chose 13 categories only and chose about 2 books from each category. I don't want to read any children's book and I don't think I chose any YA or cookbooks. I'm also most excited about the Science and Tech category. So many good books nominated this year. I am sad I didn't get around to many of them this year but that just makes a good list for next year :) P.S. I have a feeling the ending of My Sister, the Serial Killer will make you mad XD

I don't know if you'll enjoy Red, White and Royal Blue haha. Romance isn't my favourite genre at all but I am a big sucker for certain tropes so I did love it. But if you generally dislike romance, it's pretty sappy and I found some of the sex pretty graphic too (though not cringey and actually well-written). But it is really funny and there's a lot more to it than just a romance so... you never know.

Daisy Jones was a great book but I don't get the hype, I preferred The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo sooo much more. I think the interview format kind of distanced me from the characters and I just wanted more, Evelyn Hugo felt a lot more real to me. Could also be that I watched too many rock n roll movies and it was too predictable for me, not sure haha. Also totally agree, the goodreads awards are definitely a sad popularity contest !

I think you might not completely hate Red, white and royal blue because it's very political heavy and the sex scenes aren't that explicit

I was much more disappointed this year with the awards! Ninth house was bad, so self-important and boring - its just people who like her other books (which are entirely different, and not rave-worthy), or know her name, or anticipate liking it because of the hype. I couldnt get past 100 pages.
A lot of it is timing too - so many books come out at the end of the year. People just dont have time to read it. Or people who like the show/film. Arg.. I wish recognition went to the books that really earned it (even if opinion differs - read the book at least!)
I really like that you use the library - such a contrast to blatant consumerism. Love my library
    Opinion.
I do reckon read The Wicked King - I had the exact same thing, couldnt remember a thing of the first - except that I had liked it at the time, but it drew me right back in somehow. Curse so Dark and Lonely was really good - my favourite, but I went in with no expectations. Sorcery of Thorns, worth reading - the book is so good till the end which had a sting - with room for the second book making up for. Fingers crossed.

I plan to read a few of the ones you chose, I but I like to read the ones the fewest people voted for in each category. Why? Sometimes popular books don't resonate with me. For instance, everyone raved about the Twilight series and when I read the first book, it made me question why I ever learned to read in the first place.

Regarding Daisy Jones & the Six: I didn't read any of the other historical fiction nominated, and I haven't read the author's other book yet, but I read fifteen new (2019) books this year and I thought Daisy Jones was the best of the bunch

Middlegame is awesome but they don't really re-live their lives like I think you like as they don't actually remember it. Just don't want you to have wrong expectation 😅

The Wicked King was soooo good, but The Queen Of Nothing (the third one) is very disappointing. It would be interesting to know your opinion, but if you didn't like the first one, I think it's not even worth continuing the series

You should read Maybe you should talk to someone in the non fiction category. That's the one I voted for and I adore that book.
