    I remember when I had a battle with reality from taking to much acid. I couldn't tell if what I saw around me was real or just a big hallucination. From the sensation of touch to audio to visuals, and even time, I was lost. It wasn't until I thought about it like this; If I was really old and crazy, wouldn't people rather see a happily crazed old man compared to an unhappy paranoid soul? All those feelings and thoughts have long ago left and changing my attitude towards the reality I was in, really helped me ride out the storm man. So yeah, nice video and thanks.

      The most common counterargument, which gets me pretty irritated.
      I am well aware of that, I know that what I'm saying is maybe called a "game-rule" I believe?
      But you see, we assume that if we cannot prove otherwise, then absolute truth exists, *well good luck coming up with a masterfully crafted word-game that is a logical argument prooving that absolute truth exists...* so it can just get proven wrong a few years into the future.
      So then, we cannot prove that absolute truth exists or doesn't exist, we are not sure, *so what do we do in this position when doing decisions which impact the lives of other humans?* We are humble, just, and honest saying: "what I believe may not be right, so I'll take in acount what you believe also, for a more just judgement"? Or are we fascists by saying "I am right, you are wrong, so I will do this thing (which could just be banning you from eating an specific food, or could just as well be killing your entire race, as it happened in the past)."
      I barely thought about this, I just been letting it out on the go, so there may be an obvious flaw that I am missing, criticism is welcome... Don't worry, I won't send you to hell.
      If there's something you aren't absolutely sure you understood, tell me, I'll gladly try to explain it better, I know that with my attempt at satire and Spain as my country of birth, I can get pretty hard to understand.
      Also, I should mention that I haven't watched this video and I'm probably not going to watch it. If you watched it and think that it's relevant to this argument, then tell, me. Thank you for reading.

    Joe, I normally don't comment on videos.... but I must say... I've been using youtube for 6 or 7 years and I've seen all the most known science channels out there, and yours is, by far, the one with greatest potential. I hope you survive the growing stage of your channel because, of all channels, yours is the one I want to see succeed the most. If you can, please, stay motivated!

      “We aren’t sure that there isn’t absolute truth” so your saying that there is 100% absolute truth?...... if absolute truth doesn’t exist then I did not contradict you, no one would be able to lie about what you just said either because there would not be a true or false hood to what you just said. Every thought, statement, etc. would not be a able to be true because you just took away truth by taking away absolute truth and it wouldn’t be false because if absolute truth doesn’t exist the it couldn’t be true that something is false. Every thought and statement would alway be in contradiction even these statement that I have said. If absolute truth doesn’t exist than every bit of knowledge would fall apart, the things that you think are true couldn’t be true but also couldn’t be false, because even falsehood relies on the existence of absolute truth. For example if you got a false answer on a test then it would be true that you got a false answer on your test, without absolute truth this would not be the case. Every declarative sentence is a truth claim. Also all of your statements “we aren’t sure that there isn’t absolute truth”, “ ....so it isn’t an absolute truth” , “There’s no way of winning this no matter which side you take”, and “It’s like a whole new uncertainty principle” are truth claims, this means that in order for you argument to have any merit what so ever it would have to be true, if that is the case then absolute truth does exist. So you have two options, either have a argument that has no merit (if you assume that it is possible to not have absolute truth) making it just a bunch of meaningless words or you could just be wrong. So, either way you can not be right, so put it simply and to quote one of these RUclips comment “if you are right then you’re wrong”.

    An old joke: A theoretical physicist stood next to an engineer, they both watched the cheer leading team practice across the field. The referee told the two they could get a kiss from the captain if they would walk across the field half way at a time to the end. The theoretical physicist despaired when realizing the infinity in between. The engineer said: "I can get close enough.

    Probability of truth is also relative and subject for our own experiences.
    To illustrate this, consider the possibility that of the existence of magical (or "magical", if you will) unicorns who can move at the speed of light and are normally invisible and undetectable to humans, unless it choses to be noticed by a human. To pretty much everyone, that is an astronomical improbability. But assume that youre the only person alive today they like. You have seen them, you have been kicked by one even to prove they were real. While you just saw them a few times, you considered it far more likely that you were just losing your mind. But after many experiences with them, after being kicked by one of them and seeing and feeling very real bruises, your assertion of the smallness of the possibility of their existrnce flips on its head. Granted, you can't prove to any other person, but that doesnt change the facts you experienced yourself. Of course, you might still believe everything was just a trick of your mind because you assess that this possibility clashes with all other things you know, assume and trust/believe, and asses instead that complete madness is more likely.
    Of course, this was a very extreme and exaggerated example, but it serves its purpose and make it clear what I am going on about. You can easily scale it down to more mundane, less exaggerated cases.

    There are absolute truths and I can prove it.
    Assume there are no absolute truths. In such a universe the statement "There are no absolute truths." would be an absolute truth. The universe would then implode in a poof of logical paridoxicality. (there's a word for your unabridged Webster's dictionary. :-) )
    Since the the statement "There are no absolute truths" must be false then its inverse "There ARE absolute truths." must be true.
    There are absolute truths.
    end of line...

    • @deanboy2416
      @deanboy2416 6 лет назад +13

      Logic in and of itself was created to find truth. So if there is no logic, then there is no truth. However, logic has proven to be inexplicably useful in studying the world around us. Everything has a logical explanation (regardless of whether we know it or not). Logic is basically a "natural way of thinking". Note: natural as in it conforms to nature, not as in "it comes naturally" (because to some people it DEFINETLY doesen't XD).
      So, we have established that logic is valid and thus truth exists. As for it's "absoluteness", well... that is an open question.

    If truth is not absolute; than that is an absolute truth, and it disproves itself.

    • @davidbourne8267

      People aren't or shouldn't be saying that it is ontologically true that there is no absolute truth or truth is subjective.... making that statement would imply that truth is not just another concept in the mind...that the truth of that statement is somehow measured by..or measured in some external metaphysical realm of Truth.
      The real argument for the subjectivity of Truth is that...it is just another concept in the mind = ontologically subjective... We judge statements to be true or false if they are in line with...or in violation of our subjective concept of Truth.
      Note: not subjective in the opinion sense of the word..but subjective in the sense that truth is not a thing that exist out there apart from us like a light wave.
      I think the closest truth can get to objectivity is epistemological objectivity = true within our subjective experience of the objective world.

    I think that it is much more complex than that. Not only do we rationally know things but we also feel them. One of the most profound weaknesses of philosophy and economics, just to name two, is that they reject the place of emotion--i.e. the feeling of that 'meat-suit' that you kind of deride--in the decision making process. We have only just begun to fathom the importance of the physical body in thinking and interacting socially. I believe, for this reason, true artificial intelligence will elude us probably forever.

    • @C0smicNINJA
      @C0smicNINJA 4 года назад

      With the help of logic, all what is required to know truth is to be able to think (if truth does not exist then the statement “there are no absolute truths” would been to be true, making the statement contradict its truth value. That statement Is false, making it’s inverse true). Some truths cannot he know at this moment, but will(or would) be known when(or if) new information arises. But to say “NO truth can be know” would half to be false for the same reason “there are no absolute truths”.
      And I know I’m not quoting you, I’m just taking what your given question implies.

    You can measure that the earth is round on your own. There are multiple methods. The original method was to look at the shape of the earths shadow as it crosses the moon during an eclipse. That shadow is round. It is always round. For everyone, every time. The only known shape that makes a round shadow from all directions is a sphere. Also, you can climb a mountain or hill that is adjacent to a body of water of a few tens of miles width. On a clear day, the amount of water out can see changes with height. The change in that termination point is driven by the curvature of the surface.

    My first thought upon seeing the title of the video was "Math!"... until I remembered mathematics may actually not be a fundamental part of reality. It could just be an oddly effective, precise logical framework we humans use. To put it another way, we may be confusing the correlation of math being effective to a causation that math is effective because it's a fundamental part of reality. For all we know, math could be an abstraction of the REAL truth:
    Turtles all the way down.

    Marcus Aurelius was the former Emperor of Rome and was the most powerful person in the world more than 2,000 years ago. He was a serious student of Stoic philosophy. He said, "Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth." I agree that we should not believe everything we hear or read, but our default assumption tends to be that people are telling us the truth as they know it or come to see it. What was accepted as truth about healthy eating 50 years ago isn't necessarily the truth about healthy eating today. It takes more time to consider other perspectives on the topic of enquiry or check multiple sources for corroboratory or contradictory evidence, but having good discernment and judgment is necessary for sound decision-making.

    i get your point and it's correct, people have the right to believe in the lowest probability outcome. and you tried to make this not political, but that's where there is a problem right now (at least in the US)
    if we continue to let the trust in authorities errode - those authorities who seek to provide us with an objective truth (e.g. media and scientists) - aren't we setting ourselves up for a dangerous future? because reality is going to happen if we believe it or not (e.g. climate change). if you go all in on a low probability, you are, by defintion, taking a chance, taking a risk.
    Frankly those people who have lost trust in the authorities have grounds for that, as there has been corruption in the past and there still is (industry funded science promoting fudged results, media not engaging in nuanced debate but just funneling into echo chambers and going for clicks and eyeballs).
    but we need these authorities - unless you wanna do the job of 1000 scientists and 1000 jouralists combined, which i don't think anybody has time for.
    somehow we need to restore that trust. And while political, I think that this is nonpartisan and in everyone's best interest.

    • @joaquinbocosta
      @joaquinbocosta 7 лет назад +1

      Great points, Oliver. I'd like to point out that whether "you go all in on a low probability," you're taking a chance regardless of which option you choose, but your point is not lost on me. The negative effects of climate change do, indeed, seem to be imminent, however, it does scientists a disservice when they politicize and/or exaggerate predictions for funding purposes (i.e. email-gate, where scientists intended to exaggerate claims to secure grant money). Let's hope they come out on the right side of this and other issues. Peace.

  • @Uroshius
    @Uroshius 7 лет назад

    Concerning all the people saying that the statement "there is no absolute truth" is paradoxical: it actually isn't. Truth can only be about something, so the whole thought should be "there is no absolute truth about something/anything/everything". However, that would exclude one thing - the truth itself. Truth is a concept, not a "thing" such as a force, a state of matter, an ideology etc. Therefore, we CAN say absolute truths about truth itself, because the same rules don't apply when the object you are inspecting is the same thing as the tool it's inspected with. It's the only exception in this case. As Joe said, believing in absolute truth about something eventually comes down to exactly that - believing. And the important part about what I said is "absolute". Sure, we can hold true certain facts that are isolated from a broader picture, such as "I am alive", "It is noon at 12 o'clock", but there is no absolute principle connected to those statements. That is, there is nothing that could make those small truths universal and rellevant to the rest of the universe.
    I really hope what I wrote is clear enough.

    You said that truth is about trust. Honesty is also good. We want more honest people in our lives and the world needs more honest people who tell it like it is. I define honesty as maintaining integrity to the truth. It means reporting on events as accurately as possible and to the best of your ability (within the strengths of your memory and senses). In court, witnesses are asked, "Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth (so help you God)?" Not telling the truth in court counts as perjury and it's a federal offense that comes with the penalty of imprisonment. There are claims and there are evidence. If evidence supports the claims, then the claims can be accepted as true (assuming that bias and subjective judgment was removed).
    If there's no absolute truth, then is there relative truth?

    for me, truth is a statement in accordance with the terms of any situation. In its acquisition, it's could be seen like building a tower of assumptions and then sometimes the assumptions becomes what kinds of assumptions to prioritize over others. Critiqueing isn't necessarily about showing a statement is wrong but about revealing the other persons argument requires new and further assumptions or to remind that a piece of information is an assumption; isn't self-evident. It just seems to me to be the case, that our worldviews are so relatively narrow that critiqueing easily becomes synonymous with disproof, because we have these "assumptions about what kinds of assumptions to prioritize" and so we instantly reject statements that begin conflicting too much with these even though, as far as I'm concerned, pure logic can't deny the - however wacky - truths produced by your own niche "worldview adventure".
    idk. i've thought about this too much with small or no results and possible damage to my sanity. good video, good night.

    [1] Does absolute truth exist?
    - Yes
    - (Carry on reading for proof)
    - No
    - [2] Is that answer absolutely true?
    - Yes
    - That leads to contradiction and the answer that absolute truth exists
    - No
    - [3] Is it then conceivable that absolute truth exists?
    - Yes
    - Loop back to question [2] applying to question [3]
    - No

    If "absolute truth doesn't exist" wouldn't that make your statement's truth be absolute? So truth really is absolute...

  • @joejangsings
    @joejangsings 4 года назад

    1. Define absolute truth. Absolute truth - something that is always true everywhere.
    2. Humans don’t have the ability to explore into all of time and space so it is impossible for us to identify something that is always true everywhere.
    3. If we say “there is no absolute truth,” then we are saying that this statement is always true everywhere; making IT the “absolute truth.”
    Conclusion: No absolute truth logically cannot be the absolute truth. It is self-contradictory. Because there cannot not be an absolute truth, there must be an absolute truth. But we cannot know it with our ability.

      However, there is one way to “know” the absolute truth and that is to know it relationally. I do not know everything there is to know about my wife, but I can say that I know her because I have a relationship with her. So if the absolute truth comes to me and allows me to recognize it and have a relationship with it, then I can say that I know the “absolute truth.” Just like I can say that I know a friend. This seems to me the only logical possibility of “knowing” what is the “absolute truth.”

    There are two choices.
    1) Absolute truth exists.
    or
    2) Absolute truth does not exist.

    Don't let anyone get to ya, Joe :) You don't have to convince anyone of anything for it to be correct. All you're doing is sharing a message, and those who understand it will benefit, and those who don't go without. None of us are your responsibility.
    The universe has been perfectly content letting living things misunderstand basically everything for millions of years. It shows no signs of changing that attitude, so no pressure on you ;)

    Reminds me of an old movie, Rashomon by Akira Kurosawa... A story about a murder, where the witnesses during the trial (the accused, the wife, and the victim through a spiritual medium) all tell a different version of how the crime happened. And there was another witness who who saw everything and has a different version of the events.

    Absolute truth must exist. Because if you say, "trust no one." That statement cannot be trusted by the person who said it. Therefore you must trust someone. And if someone can be trusted. Then lies and truth exist. And if truth exists, its absolute.

    "Something exists" is an absolute truth, it follows necessarily from the old statement "I think, therefore I am". "That something has always changed" is another one (it can never have been a state of complete non-change, even just a potential means change in some way in what that potential consists of or is caused by).

    To answer the question, "What is truth?" requires, first, some sort of determination of what form that truth can take. Can you actually state a truth in words? (Remember, the word is not the object, it is simply an index of the object.) Truth might come in the form of a picture, OR does it come in your understanding of the picture? Thus, you have to begin your search for truth with some assumptions; do those assumptions actually lead to truth? Can they?

    The truth is ONLY ONE and the reality prove that it exist, but the lies can be infinite. The real problem is if we can find out it in this world dominated by lies.
