  • World leaders have expressed a range of emotions following reports from Russian prison officials on Friday about the death of Alexei Navalny, the fiercest critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The U.S. President, Canada’s Prime Minister, Ukraine’s President, NATO’s General Secretary have all issued statements highlighting Navalny’s courage in the face of adversity and condemning Putin for his brutality.
“Make no mistake, Putin is responsible for Navalny’s death... What has happened to Navalny is yet more proof of Putin’s brutality,” U.S. President, Joe Biden, said.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called Navalny an “extraordinary fighter for human rights, for democracy and someone who was standing up for the Russian people - standing up with extraordinary courage for a better future for Russia and for Russians.”
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in Berlin, said, "Obviously, he was killed by Putin, like thousands of others who have been tormented, tortured because of this one person.”
However, there has been no official confirmation of these reports from Navalny’s legal team.

On May 1, 2023, Lira was arrested for violating Article 463-2 of Ukraine's criminal code, which prohibits justification of Russia's ongoing invasion of the country. The Ukrainian Centre for Strategic Communication and Information Security noted Lira had also shared pro-Russian disinformation such as claiming the Bucha Massacre was faked or that the Ukrainian government was a Neo-Nazi regime, and that Lira had shared video of himself insulting Ukrainian soldiers. Lira was subsequently released on bail and placed under house arrest. He returned to social media to claim to have been tortured while imprisoned, an allegation denied by the SBU. Lira attempted to flee the country by crossing the Hungarian border on July 31 to claim political asylum, but was captured and arrested again for violating his bail conditions. This was confirmed by the United States Department of State and Chile's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His cause of death was reported to be pneumonia.

    • @Keralaforum

@@Star-um9cz I called the whole situation pathetic. Navalny's selfless activities went too far ... All the sympathizers here agree that Russian regime is an autocratic one without any democratic principles. Then asking and forcing Navalny to lead a one man struggle against Moscow is futile. He made his point..He was allowed to run in the 2013 Moscow mayoral election and came second, with 27% of the vote, outperforming expectations but losing to incumbent mayor Sergey Sobyanin, a Putin appointee.
... In August 2023, Navalny was sentenced to an additional 19 years in prison on extremism charges..
My question was simple: Knowing the "brutality of the regime" why did he go back to Moscow in 2021?
There are hundreds of thousands of innocent people dying under African dictators and elsewhere without even a trace - unwept, unhonoured and unsung. Navalny is highlighted by the West only because he was fighting against Putin.
In Russia many thinks he was puppet of the West and went too far in attacking Putin Regime.
The Western sympathy is hollow and pathetic! Navalny was naive in trusting the West!

At these times, family or relatives are the ones who suffer the most, but it is true that the moment he returned to Russia he already knew that his destiny was sealed and he still acted with courage.Fighting for freedom against powerful people is always dangerous anywhere in the world. That said, despite the West criticizing Putin, they are not that different considering the case of Assange and Gonzalo Lira who died in a prison in Ukraine, in other words, humans are hypocrites.
