- My N54 experienced a failure. This is going to be the first part of a series where I replace my timing chains and do the oil pan gasket and rod bearings.
I take the valve cover off in this video and explain exactly what happened. Stay tuned for further videos on this subject.
If this is the first video you are catching of mine please consider subscribing. I upload regularly.

Don’t ever stop building on the N54, you literally have the best diy videos on RUclips no cap
Sorry this happened to you, but we appreciate the video.
I love the way he just starts taking apart that engine. It's like he's tying his fucking shoes, that's how familiar he is with this engine. This kind of experience only comes with actually having ripped that thing apart bolt by bolt several times over and it's actually a joy to watch especially when someone really knows what they're doing. Honestly I don't know of any other youtuber that knows the ins and outs of an N54 quite like you. I don't even have an N54, I have an N52 but I'm still fascinated by your content. Many thanks, I'm sure there are a lot of N54 guys that are really looking forward to this. Also appreciate the caveats that this and these sorts of things are exactly what you should expect when you start modifying a car to be something it wasn't designed to do. It's cool that you don't just go throwing shade at the BMW engineers since they actually did one hell of a job with all the N5X systems. They really are marvels of engineering.
Thank you for the kind words!
Gutted for you mate, however I’m sure I speak for every one when I say, this’ll make great content for us N54 owners! So nice to see you not given up on a great engine/car considering what other cars you have lined up in the garage! 💪🏻👌🏻 Looking forward to this series!
I am stoked for this series!!! Can't wait to see your rod bearings after 200k and your modifications!!!
Your content is literally second to none for this platform. This channel will be invaluable throughout my upcoming 335is build. Much thanks for the time, effort, and extreme attention to detail you put into your videos!
Sorry for you, but I wouldn’t want to watch anyone else do this job......
200k miles was 😓 till I heard that ....your my favorite channel keep it bro
Looks like you caught it just in time! I really hope. I have been learning sooo much from you for the past year. Please keep in mind your content is a blessing for some of us that don’t want the dealer to do for us what a real dude use to do on his own not long ago until it got so darn complicated. Hence your content is the best use of RUclips.
NOOOOO! I KNEW I SHOULD'VE KEPT THE LEXUS. I really appreciate your second to none videos. You have really set the bar. Saved to my playlist......
Thank you!
i am very happy I found your channel I just bought a 2008 in 54 and I have a real nice shop with a lift and now that I have your channel I feel pretty confident I can do this work now. I have already done a lot of it.Keep up the great work thank you
Still don't have a bmw. Still watching every one of your videos
Bummer for you, great for all of us. Thanks for your effort in documenting it for the rest of us N54 owners!
You’re awesome man! Thanks for doing this. Learning how to maintain my own car is true self sufficiency at the highest level. Two thumbs up
Sorry for the bad news 😔 but a big thumbs up getting it calmly done. I hope everything works out well which is we already know your the best bro! I / WE thankful for the videos!! I'll be watching 👀
This is the second comment I'm writing in you tube. I want to give you a big thanks for the info and proper detailed videos you made. (I have 335i as well.) You share every small bit how, what and why. My admires for capabilities. Please continue helping us.
Sorry to hear about your bad news, a real bummer. But I’m sure you’ll easily get it sorted, just think about all of the people waiting and watching your videos, that in a way you’ll be helping. Good luck, you’ll ace it. 💪🏻
Your videos are amazing, you really have the mind for this stuff! Being an auto mechanic is an astoundingly complex profession.
Sorry this has happened to you brotha. Thank you for all ur great content. Can't wait to see where this builds ends up
RIP my guy. love what ur doing! As an e90 owner, ur videos helped me to work on my car. Good luck!
Your videos have helped me so much with my e92 n54 it unfortunate but good in a way love the content cheers from Australia..
Awesome channel man every issue I’ve experienced with my N54 your channel educated me on how to fix it doing my shift solenoids this weekend and I’m using your tutorial
You are every n54 owner superhero. Thanks for those great videos
Sorry for the problems, but once again excellent content-best of luck!
I watch all your N54 stuff. Cutting edge!
Hands down the best N54 channel on youtube. So sorry for your car. Keep up the great content. With best regards from Finland.
Still cool calm and collected. Can't wait to see the next build!
Agreed, so sorry, but that is what happens when you have cool custom toys, they will break. And though it sucks ! You now have more content for the E90, and we are going to watch every minute of it ! After this project you will have completed everything that could happen to an N54, E90 making these videos an asset for any one that can wrench and loves these cars !! Looking forward to these videos, so sorry it happened, very happy your gut feeling kicked in and you were able to minimize the damage.
Looking forward to this series! Thanks and I'm really keen to see how you take off the crank chain sprocket and refit it with the engine in the vehicle.
Awesome video ! Awesome channel , keep up the good work 💪👍
Good info. You really know your stuff. The knowledge you have on this engine is impressive, and always interesting.👍
I'm really interested in the rod bearings replacement. That is a task on my project list as well. Not looking forward to it but it is doable. Great content and detailed interpolation bro!
I bought a x1 with a n55 engine because of this channel! Ive been watching all videos for a long time! It really encouraged me going into the bmw world! I wish you all the best and this job is gonna be so easy for a guy who swapped a auto for a manual transmission! Good luck buddy! I wish you all the best!
Thank you! That's awesome to hear!
Fellow Houstonian and E91 owner as well. Good work and look forward to following along.
Im sorry this happened but I am really looking forward for the rebuild🤩
You have just about every tutorial I’ve needed...(knock on wood lol), great content man love just seeing how you do these things in great detail even the jobs I don’t need it’s nice to learn about my engine and see the ins and outs of what’s possible in another 100k miles
I’m really interested in this series!
You’re amazing. Love watching the content. Pls keep it coming. Thx!
So much nice work done on the car by you and it is terrible that you have to do all of that work. Thanks for the instructional video and the others to come
Sad news, but great content coming! You the man! 👍
Sad for your engine ! But happy for the channel, N54 content coming soon !! 😁
Hope all is okay in there. Following along. Pulling my subframe for the pan gasket right now.
watching this video gave me the confidence to change my valve cover gasket on my 2011 135i n55 thanks
I have a video on changing the valve cover on an N55. I used to have an N55 on my 2014 X5.
OMG!!! Dude I’m soOoo glad it’s you doing this DIY lol can’t wait till you finish so I can do mine,l. BTW sorry this happened to you.
The n54 keeps the channel alive, this is going to be a good series 🍿
Yeah the N54 is a big part of the channel, hoping to make the B58 a big part as well.
you will have it up and running in no time.
I wanna see how long you can keep this N54 alive, holy shit 💯
good luck with it man, sorry to hear it though
Hope you get it fixed brother!
Subscribed! Best N54 videos
can’t wait for this series, also you should try to get a m18 or vergas aluminum valve cover.
Seems to be some problems with sealing on the after market valve covers. Investigate thoroughly.
Very interested in this as well! Thanks
Thanks for making these vids! Great content and DIYs. Sorry this shit happened to you but great info about the Helix 4x vs 3x.
Damm man that sucks. I got the 535xi and just got stage2 lpfp the ethanol reader from spool performance and I was considering on the helix overdrive just because u been using it for a while without problem. I hope u can fix this issue soon. Keep the videos coming and good luck 👍🏽
Yeah the overdrive itself has held up well so hopefully after doing the chains I'm in good shape fueling wise going forward. Will do thanks!
Sorry for the break down but on the other side, I can't wait seeing you, getting her back in perfect shape.
Man, sorry that happened, but im hyped for the series 😂
Lol yeah I'm not too mad about it, at least I have some content to pump out.
@@VehicularDIY i got you. If you do decide to go single turbo...... i bet you will get a TON of views. Especially if the quality is as good as your other DIY videos. Great content 👌
I wish I could come to help you, great video!
Nice save
Oh wat.... Well great timing dude. Pulling my engine today or tomorrow... its just hot out. Great to have more references... but not like this.
This sucks but at least after this job you’ll know you have a pretty solid engine
I live in Houston also wish I had a cool garage to work on my car. I volunteer my 335i E93 if this channel needs one that's running to the ground lol
I was just wondering how you gonna take the valve cover off without taking the brace off. Haha. Sorry it happened man, but gonna be good series of videos and help a lot of people. Am a dealer tech. Never had to do any N54 timing chain buy done lots of N20 chains. Seen them go as low as 50000 kms here in Canada. I guess the cold weather dont really help. I cant imagine doing all these without a hoist though. Hats off to you !
I'm sure you do way more maintenance than the average owner but I'm happy to hear you made it to 200k. I just passed 85k on my N55 and with the jb4 (and many bolt ons) I was wondering how long I'd be able to keep it going before I get an uncommon but significant issue.
Damn. Well at least you have a plan I would probably defer to some kind of keyed crankshaft retainer as even S55 have been known to spin.
The rest well be truly informative and I have seen some information the N54 big end rod bearings should be replaced in high mileage examples.
Sorry to see that happen to u hope it didn’t damage anything major in it,
watched a view videos..... This guy is a knowledge/auto mechanic machine.
I'm so glad I got the 3x Helix, no reason to run more than E60
Just came from Peter McKinnon's latest video, and he was using the same background music, LOL. But I can't blame you, it's good music.
Lol yeah I just search for the latest popular music on epidemic sound.
Bummer, dude...but we will all soon learn a great deal.
Mine just spun a bearing at 109k miles and has rod knock. Was running 5w40 molygen oil. Have a new motor being installed now. Praying I have no more problems.
Lasted long no worries 👍
Looks like fun
Hope all is well!
Excellent video I have 160k on my N54 and always worry about rod bearings failure curious how yours look.
What a ride
Overdriving the fuel pump would also demand more power from the engine to turn which has to go through the chain. Chain Tension would go up and beyond what they system was originally designed for.
This could have been much more catastrophic. IMO you got off easy/lucky as I have heard motors have have been destroyed beyond repair and guys have had to have them rebuilt. I'm currently running the 3x on my manual n54 and I don't wanna risk it even with low mileage (under 100k). I enjoy your N54 content! Considering the platforms inherent flaws you should have content for years to come if you keep the car. lol. Look forward to the rest of this video series. Maintenance Maintenance and more Maintenance FTW!!
Yeah in a way it was good I let the car idle for a long time before leaving as the failure occurred while the car was idling and the chain let go while driving very moderately. I could have just as easily been beating on the car at full throttle and it could have let go at high RPM. Yes maintenance before mods for sure lol.
You just put that Oil pan gasket on. Oh Well Let's go.
Believe it or not it's been many years since I did the pan gasket. Before I was filming, I think I did it in late 2015 or early 2016.
Looking forward to some heavy engine rebuilding/replacement content.
Yeah I'm looking forward to making it.
Same bro
I only have 92k miles on my N54 with the helix but the same thing happened. 6AT. DAW turbos on 21psi.
fingers crossed 🤞 god bless
That sounds like a death nail for the helix overdrive to me. Increased chain tensioner wear. Maybe slower on the 3x but likely present.
Plus the whole crank hub issue. More pressure on the chain. More chance of spinning.
It's hard to say how much more strain the 4x kit might exert over he 3x kit but if someone had the 3x kit installed and they were approaching 200K miles I'd now definitely recommend the chain replacement. Overall I like the helix and how seamlessly it works with the factory DME so the trade off was worth it to me vs going port injection.
Bullshit. Helix (3x) is still the very best hpfp upgrade for the N54. There is a reason they stopped development of the 4x overdrive. This bieng one of them. Don't blame 200k miles of wear on the Helix.
Edit: Are you the threethreefive/Maypop pos everyone is getting sick of?
@@thelightning87 no, fact. Accelerates wear leading to possibly very expensive work. Stick with port injection. Zero stress.
Ooh Frank, Maypops the man.
You still smoking too much dutch good stuff?
Beata luck my dude! Junk yard n54 can be had for decently cheap worst case
Glad im ok with watching bmw content on youtube and driving a honda accord.
I had a N54 crank hub slip. *Please note how many degrees it takes to loosen your good crank bolt* Mine was 100deg and completely free bolt FYI.
Important tip - the flywheel locking pin can trick you with its engagement position. Right beside its true position is a faux position between the locking tab and a flywheel bolt, please be aware.
P.s. i didn't see any difference to the contact surface finish on a new hub - i went vtt hub in the end
sorry to hear, great editing though
when his N54 fails, makes you wonder where you stand among the crowd
I just had to do the cam ledges on my 335is. They still get eaten eventually. Especially if you go with the new 0w30 oil recommendation from BMW. You're in there. You may as well take care of it.
Do you know if there is any way to get an idea on their condition without removing the trays from the car?
@@VehicularDIY I had issues vanos codes at first and then changed the solenoids. Actually got worse then had boost codes and full limp mode (no boost or valve timing). My e30 was faster. It is not a difficult job and you'll need the cam timing tools anyway for the chain replacment I'd assume.
Sorry this happened King. She’ll only come back a trustier steed
Aww man thats to bad. Glad youre taking care of it right away. Have you already done the cam bearing ledge ring replacement?Would love to see a diy on that. Thanks again for all your content!
Glad it's helped! I haven't. If they were a little more cost effective I would have picked them up and put them in while I was in there, they go for $1000 for the set. I heard they used to be significantly cheaper. So far I haven't had any issues. Running 5W40 is probably helping.
@@VehicularDIY yeah i have read ppl on the forums have just replaced the metal rings on the cams with the new updated design of ring that doesn't damage the ledge, i would imagine its just better to do it all at once, im hoping to do it for pure preventative maintenance. Also i have seen you use both Rotella t6 and liqui moly 5w40 do you have a preference at all? Or seen the advantage of using one over the other?
I prefer Rotella T6 for how well it holds up and for what it costs IMO. It's also readily available locally.
Sorry that happened man. My stomach would have turned a few backflips seeing that oil pressure light come on. I just installed an overdrive unit last week. If this happens I'm going back to Hondas.
Yeah at first I thought it was just my HPFP failing then I got the notification on the iDrive and was like oh damn lol.
@@VehicularDIY Good luck on the build sir. Beware of those pick up tube bolts for the oil pump. Had the oil pan gasket changed a few days ago to find one of those bolts in the pan from working its way loose.
Its all a learning experience
Very curious to see how your rod bearings look. My N55 335 is at 186k miles and I need to do my oil pan gasket soon. Want to see if it's time to do the rod bearings while the oil pan is out
Yeah will be interesting to see how they've held up.
i was considering the 4* helix.. but if vibrations are a major issue, i'm also going to be running solid engine mounts, i wonder if that's going to be an even worse idea?
Damn bro, you jinxed yourself when you made that pressure test video. Sorry about your car
Curious to see what the rod bearings look like, pondering doing mine in my 2011 e92 335i. 🤔🤔
Yeah, I also wonder if the N54 used the same rob bearings that came in an N55?
N54 👍👍
This will provide great content, kudos.
Sorry I don’t understand what the cause was, you mentioned some device you installed? Helix overdrive?
No worries, yeah the high pressure fuel pump overdrive kit that I installed causes excess wear to the timing chain guides and one failed.
Vehicular DIY wow but not surprised. Aftermarket companies rarely do all the testing an OEM would or have access to the data they need to design their parts. I have massive respect for the Engineers that release these cars
Bro that suck that this happened to you your videos have helped me so much on my n54 you should be able to get her running in no time but i was wondering are you gonna go single turbo?
Thanks, I'm glad they've helped. I want to, maybe later this year.
@@VehicularDIY Who wants a lag queen on the street. There are really good twins now out performing the singles. Also, for more power, you will have to build your own engine.
This is why id rather PI when the time comes for it
