+Richard Zuelch Well, it was the end of europian music. After Shosty "le deluge". End of old culture made in Europe. No more great composers. Matachich (conductor) said: the old great (Bach, Mozart Beethoven) drunk all the best wine. They let us Coca Cola!
I am going crazy over his performance of the second movement. I'm playing this piece, and I kind of hit a point where I was having a hard time being more creative, and this was like a breath of fresh air plus a punch in the face. THIS IS AWESOME. I just love love love this recording.
Wow... What an absolutely riveting performance. Probably the best interpretation I've ever heard. Maxim's sound is what I consider to be the ideal viola sound- it's rich, yet clear and precise. And it was done with such great control of technical aspects and tackling the the piece as a whole. Bravo!
¡bravo! la Maestra Kathryn Stott toca brillantemente esta sonata. la interpretación por la Maestra Stott es verdaderamente sobresaliente. bravissimo e mille grazie per el vídeo. muchas gracias y saludos desde Tokio.
Amazing performance of this piece. Does anyone else think his viola looks pretty small for him? like I'm 5'6" and I have a 15 5/8" viola and he's huge and his viola looks about the same as mine. Might be strange optics the camera but i could see him on a 16 1/2" easy. Either he plays super well and his viola is beautiful 😍
The length of back on his Guadagnini is 410mm, so that's essentially a 16inch viola (plus an extra millimetre). The neck is also slightly longer, a neck and fingerboard that would be more appropriate on a 16.5 inch viola. Having met him in person he does seem to be 5 ft 11 so yes, he makes that viola quite look small.
Shosty wrote this piece while travelling on a camel with Brezhnev through the Sahara desert accompanied by mice. He arranged it for triangle and drums some time shortly after his death.
Shostakovich's last completed composition (1975). One of my favorite pieces.

Brilliant and so much suffering! The two great performers, Ryzanov and Stott end literally devasted. Supreme interpretation...
I second Mark's comment. Very brilliant, soulful performance. Bravo
Wow. You can feel the emotion pouring out of him. Incredibly impressive performance.
One word: STUNNING.

Top mine for new works of the week
Beautiful ending to the third mvt
Obviously the best :)
gorgeous
14:50 WTF no other soloist can play that scale as clean as he can
Love how he quietly tunes the C-string, preparing for the end in C major 38:09
