The whole issue with electric vehicles is that they aren’t being brought to market by consumer demand. They are being brought to market because the government has determined that’s what we will be allowed to drive in the future. This skews the market so that we produce way more EV’s than anybody wants. Hence, they’re piling up at dealerships unsold. The free market would address this imbalance if allowed. But that won’t happen.

Greetings from a German engineer, I just got my Mercedes EQA (I don't know if the A-Class is even known in the Usa) 3 weeks ago. All-wheel drive, 290 hp, drives quite well, but complicated operation of the software, poor range, higher consumption and 2200 kg weight, no frunk, small interior, costs 68000 euros.
My 2023 Tesla Model Y weighs 200kg less, better range, unbeatable software, almost twice as much horsepower, cameras all around, larger interior, glass roof and 10000 euros cheaper
Mercedes EVs are no real competition for Tesla. Mercedes CEO announced last week that the development of a new efficient EV platform will be stopped for the time being.
I like driving EV (Tesla) as I only drive a maximum of 100km every day in the city and charge at home. Very convenient. But with 250km of German highway, the battery is quickly empty. No idea how quickly I'll be empty in winter.

Great acceleration, soooo quiet ride, electricity costs much cheaper than gasoline (35% of the cost of gasoline per 100km, here in Germany gasoline is very expensive, not such a gasoline price paradise like in the USA), 6000,- Euro government subsidy, no car taxes, avoidance of driving bans in the city, hardly any maintenance costs in the first 3-4 years,
AND: I have leased the cars and therefore have no problem selling them on the second-hand market. Besides, the technological development in the field of batteries is still too fast for me to want to sell a used EV in 5 years. Just return it and then choose a new one.
And to be honest, some EVs (Tesla, Porsche) are still considered cool and trendy here in Germany. Also, the politicians here have banned the registration of new ICE cars from 2035. Although I think the ban will be lifted at some point. Nevertheless: here in Germany, politics is a bit eco-radical at the moment.

A brief explanation of the Mercedes EQA: it is our second car for short distances in the city. My mother-in-law is a Mercedes employee and can lease the car for a year on incredibly favorable terms. The Mercedes is then cheaper per month than a 5-year-old used VW. We lease for a year, then we get another new Mercedes. I think the next one will be an E- or C-Class gasoline.

I just KNOW that when I have any problem with an electric Mercedes that the dealer is not going to know how to fix it and leave me saddled with loaner cars, and long delays to get the car working right, and that is just during the warranty period. After the warranty expires I am quite sure the car will require $2.00 per mile to repair and have a resale value of $500.00.

I wouldn't be at all shocked if MB released a turbo diesel/hybrid diesel G-class. It's not like they haven't built such before. The W460-461s came with two gas engines and two diesels exclusively and the diesel variation is in high demand amongst collectors. I've got an '88 230GE (4 cyl gas) and one of the complaints I hear most often from newer G owners is related to consumption. Sticking a turbo diesel in a W463 would be an excellent move IMO. I too believe MB's gonna have a hard time selling an electric G-class...especially if a battery swap is a $60K + affair. Even G owners have their limits.

I agree 100%. The potential problems with electric cars are what are driving me backwards to a 300 TDT: lot fewer expensive electronics that can go wrong. (And who knows if those parts will be available when the car is 20+ years old.) And at some point electric cars are going to have to pay for using the road like those of us with conventional cars do through the gas tax, and they won't be such a cheap option anymore. (I cannot believe those people who complain that any tax on their electric car is unfair and they could not afford the car if they were taxed: not my problem, and I shouldn't have to subsidize your use of the road.)

I feel like it all boils down to looks and reliability. I can totally see the tesla customer going for an electric C or E class instead of a model 3 at a comptetitive price point. The current mercedes electric vehicles are just not appealing to the eyes. Having all of these issues off the bat is just insult to injury as well. Long term though, EVs are really at a stand still with innovation. Besides increasing the range and speed, which already has a near ceiling, there really isnt anything else that the EVs offer. I think EVs have a place in the automobile industry, despite what others may say about it being a government made phenomenom. People who drive teslas LOVE them and I don't think the demand of the general public is going anywhere anytime soon, however I do think that alot of automakers really overshot their outlook on the EV market. I think a good move going forward is to take your top 1-2 Sedan, maybe 1 SUV ev and focus on hybrid powertrains for the majority of consumers.

But getting to what Pierre asked, why not many MB ev cars on the road, maybe the brand isn’t offering anything innovative? Or not innovative or reliable enough for the money? A Tesla 3 can be bought for less than half the price of a MB ev, and it has some cool features, are fun to drive and have decent range. A big MB ev is just an electric version of the same blinged-out luxury gas powered car? Maybe that’s not enough?
Here in Los Angeles I see a lot of MB ev’s but I guarantee they are leased so no issues with depreciation or reliability. More people seem to buy Teslas outright. Not sure what that means but there it is.

It would help the entire ev car industry if a standardized battery pack would be developed. Like AAA batteries but on a big scale. Proprietary battery designs unique to each car model will be the single most problematic issue when it’s time to change it out or it gets damaged. EV cars are basically like iPhones, totally disposable in a few years because maintaining them doesn’t make financial sense in the long run. It’s going to be very sad for the environment in 10-20 years time.

    • @aged7968
      @aged7968 24 дня назад

@@liljawn826true enough. But you have to think this through. A 108 kWh battery assembly in a Mercedes EQS needs about 8,500 of your 18650 battery cells (correct me if I’m wrong plz). You can’t just look at the individual cells. It’s a whole power unit with internal cooling, computer modules, etc. At this time they are not replaceable on a practical sense and they are not repairable or recyclable. When they wear out or get damaged they can’t be easily replaced due to their cost and engineering unique to each car model.
I’m talking about standardized power units of 50 to 80 kWh. If yours goes bad or is damaged, pull out the old one and install a new one plug and play. Maybe even rebuild the returned power units. It’s just an idea. My opinion is the ev car industry is killing itself with engineered obsolescence.

I am not opposed to electric cars per se but they are only practical for most people for local around town driving if you can charge at home. Was recently visiting a friend in LA and in his neighborhood almost every second home had a Tesla parked in the driveway, some had two, with chargers running into the garages. Where I live in Phoenix not so much. If you don't have good home charging and you don't have a Tesla you are stuck with the Non Telsa charging networks which are practically useless. There have been numerous channels on RUclips exposing EV-Go and Electrify-USA and the trouble peple have trying to use these networks. I'm in IT and I HATE the idea of computers on wheels. Tesla does it better than anyone else but that's becuase they are not a car manufacturer. They are a tech company who makes their gizmos mobile. Even then there are very stupid design and engineering choices waiting to bite unsuspecting owners in the ass beacuse their "cars" are designed by code-monkeys who can't concieve of a world outside of a computer program. As for Mercedes. Stick a massivly overpriced unreliable new technology into an ugly vehicle on the back of the modern Mercedes (Post 2000) record of staggerinly overly complex unreliable vehicles and why would most normal people go near them? even if they could afford them.

I wonder if demographics are an issue in gauging demand: goog says that 50% of MB drivers are male, half of them are over 55. Electric car "likely" purchasers age range 18-30 - i.e., if they could afford it. Worldwide demographics are becoming inverted, esp in advanced economies. Therefore, less young people, lots of old folks. The young traditionally have less financial resources as well. Me likes my 83 300CD, I removed the back seats and noticed a rust spot, then tracked water ingress to a failed a window seal, which I can replace. Nostalgia for analog/mechanical things runs strong in Gen X on up, where the bulk of the population averages. Conclusion: EVs a diminishing market in part due to aging population. They should make small trailer that is a battery pack towed behind the car frame; have a small battery inside that can do in-town errands and a trailer for long runs.

There was ample supply of parts and skilled mechanics, costs were quite reasonable and the industry had not shifted to the current "plug & play" mindset. The aftermarket will address the battery issues. Weve seen them do this with the first generation Prius and Escape hybrids, which are both really great cars that are seeing 80's Mercedes levels of miles racking up on them. The batteries themselves aren't the problem. The problem with these cars is the lifespan of the other components of the vehicle. The modules, the touchscreens, the buttons and switches that do not lend themselves to repair but only replacement. You wont see these parts available on the aftermarket, and with Mercedes pushing for a 10 year life cycle for the vehicle we wont expect to see them available at the dealer, either. So, why would anyone pay $200k for a car that they can't keep? With Mercedes build quality currently in the dumps, the Ford is just as nice and its only $80k. These Mercedes electrics are appealing to the same people who buy G-Wagens. It's just a tax writeoff and that's it.
I just did a week long training course on the Ford Lightning and eTransit. Those vehicles are very serviceable and Ford has made it a point to move as much design and manufacturing of major components under their own roof as possible. They're designed and built to be repaired. They even went so far as to just install a high volume full duty cycle vacuum pump to drive the traditional hydraulic brakes. They're still overpriced, but you can expect a long service life and maximized value out of those cars. You wont get it out of one of those Benzes.
