Thanks Pierre. Owning a W123, W108, W121, W124, 2 W126s and a W202 myself, I can confirm everything you say. Long gone are the days when Mercedes was a company where true engineers ran the company.

Unfortunately that is so. I have a 2007 W245 B Class and have had an issue with the cheap and nasty starter motor - probably Chinese!!! To get it out to rebuild it some say you have to remove the engine!! Yikes!!! But there is another way; you can just remove the right front wheel and the exhaust manifold and then with difficulty it can be extracted.
Otherwise the B is (so far) quite a good car. I have owned 6 MB's in the past, but never any as "new" as the B.

Let's face it. In the last 25 years virtually all Automotive innovation has been "compliance" driven due to the environment. Up to that point innovation for the most part was about improving the quality and performance. Not so much now. "Forever" cars have always been owner dependent. I grew up in the Midwest in the 50's and 60's. You would shocked how many people trade cars every year. The mentality was I'm driving this car for 12 months
    so screw the maintenance costs.

Through my past job I had to lease cars and never had one more than three years, and I guess that may be the only way to 'own' a dependable new car. There is no joy in this for a motor head - may as well rely on Uber.

No, I don't think so. The W201 is NOT in the same league as the other two you mention. From where I'm standing, the end of the W123, W124, and W126 chassis' signaled the end. After all, the conclusion of the run of those three models marked the end of Daimler-Benz AG. As an entity! It wasn't long until the merger with Chrysler Corporation -- builder of the world's biggest pieces of shit. So yeah...the greatest carmaker in the history of the world ended in 1999 but they stopped building their cars to the classically expected standard in 1996. The W201 marked the beginning of that END -- it was NEVER part of the "old" Mercedes-Benz tradition of century lasting quality. THAT was in the demise of the W126 chassis. THAT car is the absolute pinnacle of automobile design and functionality, reliability and dependability, luxury and safety, performance and economy. The best car ever created is the W123. The best "luxury" saloon EVER created? Yeah...that was the W126 -- both sedan and coupe. Not even the Maybachs of today communicate the same energy and feedback, in the same manner, to the driver/owner, as the "vintage" cars from the classic era. The Daimler-Benz era. I doubt any car ever will again. At least, not in that manner...not in the way a W126 handled and performed in it's day. There was nothing like it before and there hasn't been anything quite like it since! Such a very special car that was very much "of its time" and is still in enormous demand TODAY!

Imo, w123 was the start of the downswing and into w126 territory. After 91ish there was too much pressure to complete with the Japanese imports so MB had to drive out cost.
My son will get my W126 if we can keep the rust away from the W210 it would go to one of my other kids. However, I'd be surprised if we could get parts for the w210 for another 15 years. With the sacrifices given up between the two series, I'd have to pick up a parts car for the w210. The 126 is just much more solidly and robustly built compared to the w210. Yet I wouldn't hesitate to jump in either for a ride from Chicago to Titusville.

W126 molded door clips usually break off and fall into the door. Mine had 5 out of 6 broke. I guess The last guy to remove the door panel was a slow learner. Anyway here’s how I fixed mine. I retrieved the broken clips and matched them to the stubs on the door card. I mixed some fiberglass resin and took fiberglass mat (not screen) and formed it around the hook and base. I took aluminum foil and wrapped the whole scene, insuring the opening under the hook that goes into the door slit didn’t close with dripping goop. After it sets you can either leave the tinfoil, or pull it off if you’d like. Most of it came off pretty easily. This worked flawlessly on my car

Yep. I tried a 2009 S550. Tried a 2005 E500 4Matic. Tried a CLK 320. Absolutely loved every one of them (the E500 the most -- what a car) but if I'm honest about it, both my 1984 and '85 300Ds, 1990 300SE, 1993 400E and 1993 500SL drive just as well, if not better. They need repairs and service less often, and they're just more comfortable. They "feel" heavier -- read: safer -- and the quality is self-evident; there is almost NO PLASTIC! ANYWHERE. Everything is wood or metal. There's nothing like a pre-1997 Mercedes-Benz automobile. No Audi, BMW, Lexus, Infiniti or Jaguar even compares...

A truly great commentary, Pierre. I have always owned Saabs and old Benz's (W105, 111, and 116); my next car will be a 91 126 (Go analogue!). My mechanic of 30 years who has worked on all my cars no longer works on any MB built in the last 10 years because of the electronics - in NYC where there is a surplus of great analogue mechanics he cannot find a good digital mechanic for under $150,000. It's really scary. A close friend (not a motor head) in Florida wanted to buy a used SUV and was looking at an 2013 ML350 gas car with 120,000 miles because he said 'Mercedes were the best cars and last forever' - which I offered a different opinion regarding 'contemporary' models. I suggested he contact you. I don't think he did. I dread the next call.

Until 1986 Mercedes made their cars as best as possible. It was still an era of engineers & designers.

I have a ‘95 0.34 E420, it works, and it can keep up with modern traffic.
Granted the three major harnesses have been replaced, they are all rebuildable.
Yes the pulse diagnostic is a pain but the w124 is so prevalent that there are so many good mechanics who can diagnose what is wrong. It’s not that complex of a car.
So as long as parts are available it should be included as a forever car..

    1) I would love to hear / read interviews with retiring senior engineers who had been with the company in the good old days, and were there for the painful changes in the late 80's to mid 90's. Probably was no fun to watch all your hard work and values going down the drain. (Documentary anyone? -- Might already exist, albeit in German..)
    2) I want to know why Mercedes felt they needed to change: Why was the cheaper (but lower quality) Lexus a serious competition issue? I mean sure, Mercedes would lose a lot of market share. Of course. But could they have downsized and survived on lower sales as the price for keeping their engineering ethic? Or would their sales really have gone to complete zero?

mercedes to this day still has wire harness that fall apart. look at the headlight assemblies. china makes better ones than mb. it was 18 hrs of labor to do the evap on a w140. I did so many of them that I could get it done in 5 hours. inmo this is done intentionally. most of the SDS do not have the HHT software and will not work with the 38 pin. I rebuild the p/s racks all the time and if you keep the fluid clean they last forever. Sensotronic brake control, really fun to perform the brake fluid flush. on these type of cars i think they are good candidates for eng swaps. Just watched someone buy a nice w140 600 for $900 to take the engine and put it in a 68 camaro. inmo a forever car is a NA or NB Miata. wait, you can easily swap an analog sbc into a mercedes and not have to deal with any of their computers!

I have a W123 and W126 diesel, but the issue is I noticed in the past 10 years it's gotten harder to find a good honest mechanic shop that I trust to take them to. So even though they are simple to work on, not many shops want to work on them or know how; I have to just fix things my self as much as possible or find mechanics and offer to pay them directly to work in my garage not the shop.

my w202 has 250k miles, nothing wrong with it. Cost of ownership probably 100% lower than older mercs. ALso you will be paying 4-5x upfront for a junk classic merc than a 2000s e-class you can pick up for 500$.

I own a wonderful 2002 E 430 which IMHO is the last great Mercedes. Yes they have rust issues so that has it's limitations (winter driving etc) but that said if you drive one that is right it is the 1st Mercedes sports sedan and they got it right. I'm on my 2nd one and have found he pristine examples of this pre-classic are getting very difficult to find.

Just one point on this one... I have a 2000 W163 (ML55), and a 1995 W140 (S320), and a 2003 C203 (C240 Estate). I have been able to open up EVERY single control module, and get them working again, usually just by replacing ALL of the capacitors. This is VERY important after the 20 year mark. After 20 years, the caps start dropping like flies. All of my cars have ZERO warning lights.
I have found that CARSOFT (chinese clone multiplexer) paired with a Dell Latitude D630 (running Win XP) is a very reliable, if limited way of completely diagnosing the 32-pin cars, as well as the OBD-2 cars. I have tried using DAS, with the SDConnect (C 4/5) Multiplexing unit, and it seems to be very glitchy and after trying two different new units, I haven't been able to get a fully working system. So take that as you will.

Last W124, W140 was borderline, C class and W210 are remove and replace nightmares
(imagine one day you will have no more replacements, then what ?)
The 190 was already a sign of things to come.......

Try getting a datasheet (required for German registration, if you lose your papers) for an older Mercedes van (O309).
They are charging you 150Euros for one sheet of paper !

I’ll throw my hat in the ring for an M103/M104 powered R129. I think the M103 is one of the best gasoline engines Mercedes-Benz made...the M104 isn’t far behind.
(I said ONE of the best...)
And the R129 is, in my opinion, the best design to ever come off Bruno Sacco’s desk.
As for crossing cars off your list that are named in this video - don’t. If you’ve always wanted a ‘94 E320, buy a good one. But...be ready to deal with it. Every car - EVERY car - is a series of compromises. Decide what’s important to you, and take your lumps if you have to. Missing out on a car that really calls to you because you’re afraid a window regulator might break or because you’d have to do top end work on the engine does your soul a disservice.
Even a mighty W123 can be brought down by an unobtainable cheap plastic part. Spent much time looking for a VCV for your OM616 lately that someone hasn’t ruined? Good luck driving your auto transmission car without one...
Owning ANY classic Mercedes-Benz is not for the faint of heart... but so worth it. Even if it’s just an old C-Class, if that’s what makes your heart flutter...

I'd honestly say the M104 was a fair improvement over the 103! It shared an almost identical block but with an improved double cam head and a double row timing chain that never needs replacing. They also improved the valve guides compared to the M103 so that they never needed replacing, and any head gasket failures went from mixing oil and coolant, to just leaking oil externally, which can be left as long as you can bare the mess, whereas a head gasket failure on an M103 needed addressing immediately!

@@6DtHAngL6 that's as early as it gets really, unless he had the 3.0 CIS ones in mind. I have one of the earliest injected (LH) M104s in my 92 W140. They improved a lot over the M103 but of course there were added complexities

MB, hand built quality cars, for long enough to build a reputation, then went down the mass production route, still charging hand built prices. The quality dropped significantly, but they've been able to maintain their "superior German product inductees" (Kool-Ade drinkers).
