The 80s and 90s were the eras when metallurgy and durability were highly crucial in car building. It was how car sales and trends used to be in most countries back then. That's how German and Japanese car brands made profit and built reputation back then. At the same time, other companies during the same era tend to slack off on metallurgy and durability, so that they could make cars that would only last between 5-10 years before the owners had to buy new cars from them, raising the sales charts at the same time.
Lovely design, classic timeless lines, after so many decades it doesn’t look even a bit dated. Genius is its simplicity, and the quality is proven by its longevity. I want one.
I drove a W124 once, an E220 with automatic transmission. It really is a laid-back car, and the generous steering ratio surprises me, makes the car easy to park

I once had a 1991 W124 300D. Not a fast car but an incredibly stout car. Very comfortable and well handling, build for long hauls on the Autobahn. Mine had 740000 kilometers on the clock when I sold it. Former taxi cab. Today I have 2019 W205 C220d. Too much plastic and not even close to the quality of the W124, but the comfort, power and economy is some of the best in class.
hello everyone... I drive a 1991 W124 200E and it is a GEM... Timeless design and INDESTRUCTIBLE engineering....Best of BOTH! Mercedes at it's PINNACLE!
It's my favorite car , there are no cars like w124 , it's Amazing and comfortable and stability, it's for many use in any time , it's a simple not complicated in mechanic,
My dad used to drive W124. Until flood water disabled the entire car and high cost of repair. I missed W124. Especially my dad's car with the loud fan noise, I can remember this car is the loudest fan noise in my entire neighborhood.
This era of Mercedes have a reputation of being some of the best.I owned a 1988 300 E around 2010. I must have bought a bad one, because mine was always breaking down.
I used to manage a Mercedes specialist parts & accessory shop in Central London with many international customers & many many Nigerians used to buy just these w124`s due to their build quality.... They used to call them 'V' boots due to the inner angles of the rear lights (like a V) great cars ❤
I have such fond memories of my S124 250D (S means wagon). It was very reliable, comfortable, economical and excellent to drive in all conditions. It could go for hours at top speed while still being relaxing driving experience, maintaining civilized levels of noise and not overheating or causing any other problems. Only real problem I can name is the model's tendency for rusting in northern climate where road salt is used.
Absolutely adore the W124 and have been fortunate enough to own one. A lovely 1992 230E in black with contrasting grey lower body. One of the very few cars I regret selling.
My first MBZ was a 91 300e, white with a dove grey bottom. I lowered it with Ebach springs and it handled great. Later upgraded to a dark blue 96 e430 I think it was called. I loved them and thought they were both beautiful!
I own a 1992 W124 300e. I love that car. Drive it more than my brand new Civic Si. I wouldn't compare them though. Both are a blast in they own way. But the 124 is for keeps.
My brother has one. Noisy diesel and kinda heavy. But here is the thing: we drove to remote town over a 100km. The car flew 80-100km/h over totally destroyed pothole filled "road" . We flew by BMW E60, Toyota Camry, Hyundais , Opels and what not. I was astonished how this 1991 W124 handled those absolutely destroyed gravel filled total mess of a road with comfort.

My late mother owned this car for 23 years and it still drives amazing
So you still drive it yourself?
@@DWREV barely...it is standing stationery, my cousin had a bit of an accident with it. Thinking of selling it now
i have one of this timeless car. it can be rusty, oil leaks in everywhere etc... but it still works as brand new car.
I loooooove to see content about w124
I want one.
Thank you for this wonderful reporting! All classic Benz will remain with us. Love and respect from Canada 🇨🇦🙏🍻
The W124 is the last true Mercedes-Benz (Engineered like no other car in the world).
Built by engineers, not accountants.
I drove a W124 once, an E220 with automatic transmission. It really is a laid-back car, and the generous steering ratio surprises me, makes the car easy to park
Do one for the legendary W126. I'm daily driving 560SEL
We have 1990 W124 dark grey. Still going strong. Love it
Speaking of indicators, my dad's W115 had a very distinctive and charming clicking sound too. I really miss it.
My first love for this car started in Morocco, now years later I own 2 of them.
I remember this from my childhood. Now I want one!
Best of luck. Let us know if your wish comes true!
W201, w124, w126 . No other cars can relate to this Mercedes golden era.
Well done DW on this story 👏👏 .I'm very lucky owner 😎of 1990 w124 300ce- 24 sport line and 1992 w140 S600 L both in mint condition. Over last 20+ years I have driven a lot of other vehicles but nothing can't even match MB of this era . Will keep them forever 😍🥰
Sounds nice! Good luck for the next 20+ years with it ;-)
That w124 wagon, just beautiful
I once had a 1991 W124 300D. Not a fast car but an incredibly stout car. Very comfortable and well handling, build for long hauls on the Autobahn. Mine had 740000 kilometers on the clock when I sold it. Former taxi cab. Today I have 2019 W205 C220d. Too much plastic and not even close to the quality of the W124, but the comfort, power and economy is some of the best in class.
Nice car. Take care of him.
I have the same 89th year.
My father brought me from Germany in 2002 to Russia. We appreciate these cars.
hello everyone... I drive a 1991 W124 200E and it is a GEM... Timeless design and INDESTRUCTIBLE engineering....Best of BOTH! Mercedes at it's PINNACLE!
I have owned alot of cars. I had E320 W124 and it was probably my favourite car ever
I loved w124. mercedes needs to go back to this kind of concept
i love w124
It's my favorite car , there are no cars like w124 , it's Amazing and comfortable and stability, it's for many use in any time , it's a simple not complicated in mechanic,
My dad used to drive W124. Until flood water disabled the entire car and high cost of repair. I missed W124.
Especially my dad's car with the loud fan noise, I can remember this car is the loudest fan noise in my entire neighborhood.
Do you have photographs of your family's W124? We love seeing the cars people in the REV community drive. Send us some photos on rev.community@dw.com
Legendary cars, love by all around the world. The design is easy on eyes and stunningly beautiful. Proud owner of 1995 E300
I feel lucky to own a w124. Best car I have ever had
Excellent car, I have an '88 w124 300 E and it is a pleasure to drive.
I also had a 300E! It took me through long tough drives on Nigeria’s urban and rural roads
The absolute King of the hill. The last real Mercedes-Benz.
This is arguably the best car ever made.
Bulletproof in every way in design, reliabilty, usability and class..
Finally DW!
Thank you - hope you enjoyed watching the W124 story.
@@DWREV Next time do with the BMW;)
Absolutely adore the W124 and have been fortunate enough to own one. A lovely 1992 230E in black with contrasting grey lower body. One of the very few cars I regret selling.
At least, you will remember it well ;-)
My first MBZ was a 91 300e, white with a dove grey bottom.
Real man car designer.
+1 .. Our USA 1994 E-Klasse 320 Coupe (C124) is like new .... "The best or nothing" ... Rings true in the W124 series. . Cheers, Vail, Colorado
