It's pretty rad seeing a steady release of content about the Expressive E, even though it's been out for almost a year already. It's far too common for a lot of manufacturers to release their synth with a ton of hype, then basically forget about it as soon as the RUclips coverage cycle is complete. Thanks for this fantastic presentation.
Thank you so much for an inspiring, fascinating tutorial. I have recently purchased an Osmose (awaiting delivery) and am trying to absorb as much information as possible. This tutorial is so inspirational and explores the possibilities and potential that the Osmose delivers so well. Your wisdom and knowledge is very much appreciated. Kind Regards Mick. Aus
Okay, my mind is blown. The integration with vsts is nuts. A completely new way of programming expression and dynamics. I should have asked Santa for one. 😂
So good, both Josh and this wonderful instrument! Thank you for a wonderful, inspiring and intense experience I had in the last 23 minutes. I love your energy Josh!
What a great video! I've not seen the Osmose demo'd with such creative style before. I've had my fill of Osmose sliding ethnic instrument sounds but this really shows how the instrument can open up new ways of creating sounds. Well done Expressive E and thank you Josh.
Incredibly educational and captivating! The instrument is fantastic, and you're a talented composer, @JOSHMADOFF. Please create more videos for your channel! 😊
Great video demonstrating the capabilities of the instrument. Purchased a few days ago. Eagerly waiting for it to arrive somewhere in-between Christmas and New Years eve! Perfect gift!
@@TomaszChrut I feel that there is so much that the Osmose can do via the MIDI connection that still needs to be discovered. I feel that the Osmose will be a new category on its own beside the piano, and harpsichord.
That's pretty nice, but I would really love to watch a demo of the Osmose as a CONTROLLER for a movie score, with sample libraries most composer use, and not the onboard sounds. Just to see how much we can exploit all the controls in MPE from the Osmose to control high-end sample libraries with articulations, nuances, etc... maybe even for using some modeling plugin such SWAM, Sample Modeling, you name it.
Great ideas :). It wasn't the focus in this video (other than turning Spitfire Chamber Strings into an MPE instrument), but I'm definitely going to show more of that in future videos. In addition to exploring classic high end sample libraries, some of the newer MPE capable libraries are really amazing with Osmose. Some libraries are even considering MPE in their design, giving intuitive access to multiple articulations in a single patch. Exciting times!
Hi Josh, I love your tutorials, also the happiness of seeing you enjoying your instrument :) I have a quick question, I tried the same setup with my osmose and spitfire albion one, however I have the issue of the notes being cut off/volume goes down pretty steeply. Do you have similar experiences? If so how did you solve them?
Thanks! For the Multi Kontakt setup, make sure your Midi track input is using Osmose Port 1 (not Port 2 and not All), and if you're in Ableton, you might have to right click on the Kontakt plugin in your track and enable MPE. Hope this helps solve your issue :)
hahaaaa this was great fun! Love how you used that sample library. I have been playing the old alesis micron 8 voices with it's poly aftertouch routed. So good for such an old VA synth. But most of the time I am diving deeper into the Osmose sounds, with a bit of Pianoteq-8 on top.
Thanks :). I was using the NanoKontrol2 to control the internal sound engine of the Osmose (sending Midi CCs). Since I like to keep the USB port on the Osmose free, I connect the NanoKontrol2 to a DoreMidi UMH-10 which powers the Nano and converts it to 5-Pin Midi Din. But you can connect any powered Midi controller to Osmsoe via Midi Din or USB Midi.
Great video! Would love to see (in no particular order) *using a sequencer with the Osmose *Osmose driven by a guitar/bass with a hex pickup - like a Roland gk or a cycfi *driving a combo of mpe capable hw/sw synths - i.e. an ob6 and Surge; but any mpe capable synths will do
For the 3 Sprifire Chamber Strings sounds, I was recording Midi and yes, you can 100% edit every single aspect of the performance. The DAW captures way more information than normal Midi when recording MPE, which is all editable. Also, for the Osmose internal sounds, you can also record and edit midi (i just didn't need to do that for this video)
@XrexO-c3y Thats the beauty of MPE: unlike regular midi, the notes are being recorded along with the controller data (not as separate Midi CCs but in lanes connected to the notes), so quantizing will move everything together :)
@XrexO-c3y Possibly. Ive seen good results in Ableton and Logic, but every DAW is getting up to speed with MPE at their own pace. I'm sure Reaper will improve their MPE implementation soon.
I usually score in Ableton and deliver in ProTools. For video, I generally use 1080p files, and it stays in sync very well. In Windows, you need to use Halai Media Splitter for the codec
Thanks! Yes, using the Korg Kontrol Editor you can map any CC number to any knob or fader and save templates. Theres a list of CC numbers for Osmose on the Expressive E website
@@JOSHMADOFFhi there. How do you send the ccs to Osmose? Do you do it directly plugging the controller into Osmose or do you pass through Ableton (how??). Thanks and apologize for the maybe stupid question.
@vannibombonato4180 No worries, it's a great question :). You can send Midi CCs to the Osmose directly from any device or your DAW using either the USB Midi connection, the 5 Pin Midi Din connection, or even both at the same time. In this video, I'm sending Midi CCs to the Osmose directly from the NanoKontrol2 using the 5 Pin Midi Din connection (the NanoKontrol2 is plugged into a DoreMidi UMH-10 that powers it and converts it to 5 Pin Midi DIN). The Omsose will receive Midi CCs from both Midi Din and USB Midi so a computer would work for sure. In my case I use a cheap DOREMIDI UMH10 to power the NanoKontrol2 and convert it to Midi Din sonI can just plug a midi cable into the Osmose. Ill make a video on that in the future
@JOSHMADOFF thankyou. Was wondering the same from the first time you showed the nanocontrol. I could also connect a small midi keyboard controller with this method. Oh the possibilities!!! Love your work.
thanks. Great video. I just tried to rebuild that multimode thing with strings. I failed. I have the BBC Symphonic library, which has its own player, so no Kontakt. Can it be, that this is the issue?
@MegaBajak yea, for that you'll have to open up several instances of the plugin, and assign each a consecutive midi channel (and make the channels match on Osmose). That's one advantage of Kontakt stuff. The sample library companies are slowly catching up and bringing MPE to their plugins, but for now, we have to use workarounds
Wow, this is awesome!!! What is that pre and post controlling, can you elaborate? Also what other the other knobs on the Nano doing, would love to replicate these cool effects. Please make more videos on how you compose with the osmose. This is 5+ stars
Thanks! The pre is the pre-gain for the internal sound engine. It doesn't just raise volume, it excites the whole sound environment, eventually acting as a wave folder. The post-gain is overall volume of the internal sound engine. The other knobs are set to the 6 macros. Then the faders are mapped to the internal FX parameters. And finally, the kast 3 faders are mapped to Sustain, sostenuto 1 and sostenuto 2.
Odd comment. Your hands in the multi view video seemed like they were AI generated. 😊 The music was cool and I had no idea I could take a mono non MPE sound and have it support MPE on my Osmose. That trick alone was worth watching your video. Thank you.
