She asked if any of us had seen this process before and I proudly raised my hand and told the whole class that I churned butter every day after school. I had everyone convinced that my family never went to the store and produced all our own food at home. Flash forward to the next school assembly and my mom, who just so happened to be an old friend of my teacher at the time, approached her to say how cool it was that we were so self sufficient and my mom was understandably confused. That's when it came out what a compulsive liar I was lol but on the ride home my mom was just so confused. Why did I lie about churning butter of all things? How does that even make me look cool? Have you just been agreeing with me whenever I talk about Dr. Who just to end our conversation and look interested, but never watched Dr. Who?” I eventually stopped chatting about such shows and games and movies in high school because I realized how few of my classmates seemed to know and were just ad-libbing it, and weren’t actually caring.

I feel like many of the kids I used to talk about my favorite TV shows and comics books and video games with would basically do this just because they didn’t watch them and wanted to act like they know about the show, and act interested when I probably was just boring them or annoying them.
Like one time I distinctly remembered around when I was in High School. I said something like “Did you catch the newest episode of Dr. Who? Man that new character (Made up a name to trick them, forgot exactly what the name was) was so awesome.” One of them just said something like “yeah I agree he was cool.” Then I was like “Hah! There isn’t any character in the show named that. Have you just been agreeing with me whenever I talk about Dr. Who just to end our conversation and look interested, but never watched Dr. Who?”
I eventually stopped chatting about such shows and games and movies in high school because I realized how few of my classmates seemed to know and were just ad-libbing it, and weren’t actually caring.
Relatable as hell, lol. I used to do this when I was younger bc my social anxiety was through the roof, but I'm better about being honest now. The risk is not worth it 😂

I remember getting into conversation with a bunch of friends who started discussing basketball. I casually mentioned I watch it too (even tho I’m not a sports fan and have never seen an NBA match in my life). The discussion started getting more intense and I started answering with generic responses until I mentioned a player who I watched a few years ago but my friend told me he retired in 2017 or something and I just laughed it off saying I have bad memory and I must be thinking of some other dude lol
