    Lorena, I love this video, I've watched it several times. I truly love and appreciate how much time and care you put into your clients. You are a very good instructor too.
    Maybe with your new Laser machine you can create some type of guard you could place over the hopping foot that would protect your fingers, and for smoothing the quilting surface from tucks or pleats...just a thought.
    I love all of your videos, you're an awesome lady.

    Measuring for borders, NEVER measure for borders on the edge OF FABRIC go 6" or more inside the quilt and measure from there, horizontally and vertically. The edges can get stretched out, hence the borders do the same. I read an article on measuring borders the correct way I believe in a Ladies Home journal. Has worked for me everytime.

    You could lay down a piece of wash away stabilizer over seam. Then use moist cloth to activate it and the stabilizer disappears. I have used this method when embroidering and free motion quilting purse panels.

  • @rsplatt100

    Wow.. That was a hard job. My elderly neighbor taught me to quilt. I remember her very distinctly telling me not to measure the outside of the quilt or just sew on the border as it will stretch and not end up square when I’m done. She taught me to measure down the center of the quilt and that would be the length of my border. This is done for both vertical and horizontal borders. The lady who does my longarming tells me how happy she is to longarm my quilts because they are always square. I have my neighbor, June Lind to thank!

    I am learning so much mainly because I just got a longarm myself and I have some tops that I made that I KNOW are not perfect and this has helped me to see what to expect when I go to finally quilt them. Also do you charge your clients to fix them or do you call them to ask them "Hey, you can fix your borders or I cannot do it?" Have you ever encountered a quilt that you had to turn down? That would be another video idea to see what are your DEAL BREAKERS for longarming a quilt :)
    Thanks again.

    WOW!! you have really enlightened me as to the nightmares of taking the responsibility of long-arming someone else's work. I am new to long-arming, THANK YOU for all of you fabulous advise that I hadn't even realized that I might encounter one day. I wanted to inquire...would it be possible to seam rip the border off the length of the puddling and then pleat and trim and resew by hand back onto the main piece? I think this might be a bit of extra work but then one wouldn't have to try to pleat into and adjust the integrity of the pieced work. I am a retired from my alterations business and I would have to take in beaded gowns on the side seam and sometimes this was the only way to refit the backs to the fronts.

    • @ToniNov25
      @ToniNov25  6 лет назад

      yes you can.. its just more difficult when its on the Longarm and when your working with the three layers as usually you see it puddle when a big chunk is being quilted already.

    Very helpful information, Lorena. I go to the Houston and Dallas Quilt Shows every year and it’s astonishing to see how many quilts hanging, have wavy borders. So many piecers just place the border strip and start stitching. They’re inviting disaster.
    I have plans to begin quilting for the public later this year, but will be providing detailed tutorials on applying borders to quilt tops in hopes of avoiding these situations.

    i learned my lesson with my first quilt when I got it back from the quilters and saw the folds and not done nicely! So now I measure the middle of the quilt and the sides and aim for the middle of the road in measurements but first make sure my quilt is square! Then and only then I attach the borders and make sure they fit snugly and I have had compliments of the long arm quilters that mine was the easiest to work on, nice and tight but not too tight! So just right! ( Sounds like the breakfast commercial, hahaha) But it saved them from what you are going through! You are wonderful as I have seen quilts done at my quilt club that were horrendous, one never finished as the whole quilt was pushed sort of to one side! xxx

    • @ToniNov25
      @ToniNov25  8 лет назад +2

      I try real hard not to pleat! I even measure both horizontal and both vertical side to see that they are equal this one was ok in measurement but then the puddling happened! The good thing sometime or a lot of time starch and ironing do wonders! This time it just wouldn't shrink up! Honesty I didn't even know borders could cause such problems and I don't know there was a technique till my friend Melony told me I did my borders wrong! And sadly I Longarm!! 😂 I really appreciate you watching! Lorena

    I will sometimes use a washable fabric glue (like the glue stick used in applique) in the fold to keep the fabric down. This keeps the foot from catching the fabric. And again apply the starch and hot iron.
    I'm linking both of your videos about Wavy Borders to the ladies in our quilt guild many of them can learn how to put the border on correctly and, realize what we longarmers go through. Thank you for these videos. I had a quilt topper who had an access of 5inches on all four borders. I made her come over, helped her to take each of the four borders off and, showed her how to do it correctly. I told her that she had to do most of the work or, I would have to charge her for all the time it would take me to correct the size of her quilt. She was happy to learn and now gives me quilts that are a joy to quilt. Thank you again

    Big questions for you: having spent so much extra time on this time-consuming and super challenging activity, Do you change extra for this service?
    Or do you usually examine the entire quilt with the client the before giving a price quote?
    If you noticed the wavy border while the client was still there, do you mention it to her? do you let her know it will be extra to correct it? do you suggest she take off the border, reduce the size, and re-stitch it?
    I would appreciate knowing how you tend to handle this. TIA!!

      @@ToniNov25 Thank you again for your prompt reply! Sure apprecaite that. I'm am new at this (altho my FIL has been doing this for over 14 yrs). I always wonder how to charge. If anyone called the client and says, "Hey, I have found an issue w/the quilt (not those exact words, of course!) and will need to change the price estimate I quoted."
      I do alterations and custom sewing work of all sorts and I give a good ball-park figure and try very hard to meet that figure or even under cut it when ever I can, which is pretty often. But I always leave myself an out by saying, "It will probably be $XX as long as all goes as I think it will at this point, but I never really know until I am into the ...(dress, pants, skirt, etc) in case something unforeseen is inside that I did not know about." The client understands and I have only had to use that situation a handful of times, but when I did , I just called them as soon as I knew the issue, explained as best I could, and a new price quote, and all was well.
      Because this happens in this type of industry, I was wondering what Long-armers do when an unforeseen issue arrises...like this one...that causes a lot more time and hassle and finess AND SKILL. Thx for your thoughts!

    Would it have been a small tuck if you had done this easing the whole length of the borders

    • @ToniNov25
      @ToniNov25  8 лет назад +1

      It could have been a small tuck if the quilt didn't have so much waviness! I may of ending up having several tucks and could of ended up having pleats - I found that where I made the tuck took in all the waviness. Allowing me to straighten the quilt! The problem was the quilt border was angling downward and the waviness even ironing and using starch didn't help! Sometimes working in the fabric helps but in this case the border was too wavy and I think it's because it had two borders that didn't help! I hope I answered you! Lorena

    oh my, you did a beautiful job fixing it!!!. I'm a quilter so I need to watch how not to do an uneven quilt.

    • @ToniNov25
      @ToniNov25  4 года назад

      One way is to be careful when you are showing the quilt top off to not stretch it in the corners. You can really do a perfect piecing job and then stretch it when showing off the quilt top.

    Lorena, you are absolutely awesome! I love your videos and, as a beginner longarmer, you have helped me so much! This quilt turned out beautifully! I have had several quilts like this and I will use what you have taught me in this video. I think I will baste those pleats before quilting over them to prevent the machine from getting stuck in the fabric. Have you done, or will you do a video on squaring the quilt?

    • @ToniNov25
      @ToniNov25  8 лет назад

      Yes I will do a video on squaring up the quilt soon! I will also baste! Great tip! Thanks Lorena! Broken finger prevention! Heheee!😂

    Thanks for sharing this tutorial on fixing this major issue! I really enjoy your videos and tutorials. What kind of sewing machine and long arm do you use to make your quilts?

    • @ToniNov25
      @ToniNov25  5 лет назад

      I use a juki 2010 which is a straight line sewing machine.. but I have also used a singer talent that does the same job.. the machine is cheaper and a little louder. I have a gammill statler stitcher optimum you can use a computerized system on it or you can work on the machine manually.. I so glad you like my videos.. I really appreciate your comment.

    That quilt top was beautiful, but it was “jacked up” when it was brought to you, Lorena. It wasn’t square or flat and anyone who would expect the long arm quilter to make a flat square quilt out of a top that is many inches longer on the sides than it is in the middle is unrealistic and unintelligent. The piecer did a poor job on a most important aspect of the piecing.
    That being said, the pieced design is beautiful and you did a superb job in saving that quilt! My hat is off to you! The quilt is gorgeous.
    I found you as I was doing research on long arm quilting businesses ... I’m very curious as to whether you were compensated for the extra time and labor required to fix the piecing here and save this quilt? The time and labor were significantly more than you expected when you quoted the client, I’m sure.

      No, this is one of the clients that complained about my work and I gave her the money back... I got a video out of it I guess that is a good thing,
