It would be interesting to see videos of those houses that are about to slide. We could gain some insights as to how their foundation and drainage systems performed. I remember seeing photos of a house that was still standing on piers after the entire hillside around it had given way.
Seems like the newer builds are more likely to have trouble. If you're place is 30-35 years old or so, it seems like you've past the test of time. I have a small slope behind my house which was built in 1984 and it's fine.
