- Let me show you how I built the Cabin stairs, handrails and concrete pad all by myself and for the first time. It was challenging and I did do my fair share of mistakes but I summarized in this video what I think are the best practices to build code compliant stairs for your cabin or tiny house.

I am Tristan, I am building a 400 SF cabin at the back of my house. I plan on doing it all by myself. I plan on sharing this journey here on RUclips where I will show you every step of the way, all the struggles I run into and everything I will learn from this experience. I will then rent the cabin as a short term rental in hope of covering most, if not, all my house mortgage (House Hacking). Follow me here as this will absolutely be one of a kind journey.

😂
Having watched all your videos, I admire your humbleness for unashamedly broadcasting each trial, error, and mistake made 👍
Thanks! I try to be as honest as possible and showing that building a cabin for the first time is no easy feat
The fight with the balusters was the best part
😂😂😂
Looks Great. Thanks for sharing. Ron PTL USA
Thanks for watching
WOW!! I really like the Work that you do! I started seeing your Videos, and was so busy paying attention, that I forgot to click the Like Button! I would definitely recomend you to anyone! Your Work isn't just good, it is Superb. That Stairway will last for generations! Thank You for sharing your talents for us to see, how it is done right!!
Glad you found my content and thank you so much for the kind words, I do put a lot of effort in this cabin build and videos so it’s great to see people enjoying it !
Thanks
Hey, guy. It was very interesting to watch your work. For a beginner, you're doing great.
I hope you didn't have time to throw out the old hardened cement. Such hardened boulders can be laid out as decorative, for example, along the path or around the area.
Thanks for the tips!
Excellent!
Many thanks!
Thanks!
You bet!
Thank you for the Super Thanks! I think that you are the first ever for this channel, I appreciate it !
Lining up the posts was very reminiscent for me of making my son's crib with dowel rods. I had a few blowouts like that and made similar sounds of despair.
😂😂 I can empathize
And one more piece of advice. Belated, but maybe for the future. Concrete, only one cement is not kneeded, it is very expensive. Crushed stone and sand are added to the mixture, so it turns out to be no less durable.
The bag I used already contains aggregates, it was not only cement.
I see. English is not my native language, and the auto-translator incorrectly translated it as just cement. that's why I was surprised by such a number. good luck to you.
Can't you cut the sheet metal flashing away a bit on the pier mounts? They're unsightly.
Maybe, we’ll see
I know you have a mixer but have you ever seen the dry pour method.
I don’t think I have!
That stair looks bombproof with 4 stringers! Real nice work Tristan.
Btw, is French your first language?
Yes, as I said, it was based on the materials use on the stairs. With 1” deck boards, the max spacing is 16”. If I had used 2x6 flat, I probably could have spaced them more.
Yes I’m from France 🇫🇷
@@TheDIYCabinGuy I’m French Canadian, I live a bit north of Montreal, Québec. We have an old saying here in French: ‘’Trop fort casse pas’’ which means for English speaking readers: ‘’If it’s overbuilt it won’t break’’.
I’ve only seen two of your videos, this one and the one where you’re installing the double LVL ridge beam. I’m impressed by your hard work and attention to details.
Bonne continuation.
@@robertlafleur5179 merci Robert! It’s definitely a much bigger project that I had anticipated it would be. Oh well, now I have to finish it
Not sure what was in that can, but you deserved it.🎉
😂 just some sparking water
Hi dude, i'm your fã. Could you send me the dimesitions of this house, I try do one . Congratulations, Nice job.
Thanks! Cabin is 18’ x 20’ with an additional 5’ deck out front
Can you explain how the inspection process works?
I will soon as I’m about to get the rough framing inspection done
the risers are a bit steep a 6 inch riser is a bit more of a lazy step which you will appreciate later in life
Good point ! Time will tell
Dude, how did you finance this?
Savings and paying for it as I go since it’s been going on for 2.5 years at this point
Your stair rise of 8-1/4 means a pretty steep set of stairs. Why not use a bit more real estate out front, add one more tread, and make the stairs a more relaxing climb?
You’re correct, could have totally done that. I also have to deal with the septic tank in the near vicinity.
Having said that, 8.25 really does feel fine to me.
@@TheDIYCabinGuy Im curious what code requirement is since you mention inspections a lot so im wondering. Around where im at, its like 7 3/8" max or something close to that.
@@chrisnowak2776 it’s the NC residential building code
I commend you for actually working and building but this is why real builders do not like engineers. You based your whole building on what looks like 10 inch piers ?? That is insane way under built in any serious builders estimation!
Check out the earlier videos, I have footers under that.
