  • Let me show you how I built the Cabin stairs, handrails and concrete pad all by myself and for the first time. It was challenging and I did do my fair share of mistakes but I summarized in this video what I think are the best practices to build code compliant stairs for your cabin or tiny house.

I am Tristan, I am building a 400 SF cabin at the back of my house. I plan on doing it all by myself. I plan on sharing this journey here on RUclips where I will show you every step of the way, all the struggles I run into and everything I will learn from this experience. I will then rent the cabin as a short term rental in hope of covering most, if not, all my house mortgage (House Hacking). Follow me here as this will absolutely be one of a kind journey.

Hey, guy. It was very interesting to watch your work. For a beginner, you're doing great.
I hope you didn't have time to throw out the old hardened cement. Such hardened boulders can be laid out as decorative, for example, along the path or around the area.

Lining up the posts was very reminiscent for me of making my son's crib with dowel rods. I had a few blowouts like that and made similar sounds of despair.

And one more piece of advice. Belated, but maybe for the future. Concrete, only one cement is not kneeded, it is very expensive. Crushed stone and sand are added to the mixture, so it turns out to be no less durable.

The bag I used already contains aggregates, it was not only cement.

I see. English is not my native language, and the auto-translator incorrectly translated it as just cement. that's why I was surprised by such a number. good luck to you.

Can't you cut the sheet metal flashing away a bit on the pier mounts? They're unsightly.

Btw, is French your first language?

    • @TheDIYCabinGuy

Yes, as I said, it was based on the materials use on the stairs. With 1” deck boards, the max spacing is 16”. If I had used 2x6 flat, I probably could have spaced them more.
      Yes I’m from France 🇫🇷

@@TheDIYCabinGuy I’m French Canadian, I live a bit north of Montreal, Québec. We have an old saying here in French: ‘’Trop fort casse pas’’ which means for English speaking readers: ‘’If it’s overbuilt it won’t break’’.
I’ve only seen two of your videos, this one and the one where you’re installing the double LVL ridge beam. I’m impressed by your hard work and attention to details.

Your stair rise of 8-1/4 means a pretty steep set of stairs. Why not use a bit more real estate out front, add one more tread, and make the stairs a more relaxing climb?

    • @TheDIYCabinGuy

You’re correct, could have totally done that. I also have to deal with the septic tank in the near vicinity.

I commend you for actually working and building but this is why real builders do not like engineers. You based your whole building on what looks like 10 inch piers ?? That is insane way under built in any serious builders estimation!
