  • That's Alright Mama - Performed by Johnny Hiland at the 2016 Dallas International Guitar Show 01 Day 2 4-30-16
Johnny Hiland (guitar & vocals), Mike Barrow (guitar), T.J. Armstrong (bass), Bruce Guthrie (Drums)
    ______________________
    Johnny Hiland
You might think that being legally blind would be a hindrance to learning to play guitar, but Johnny Hiland’s incredible guitar virtuosity is evidence that this isn’t the case. Though this must have been somewhat of a challenge to overcome while initially learning to play, he took up the guitar at the very young age of 2. He won the “Talent America Contest” in New York City when he was only 10. Until he turned 15 he played in a bluegrass band with his sister, Jodi, and brother, Jerry. They called themselves “The 3 J’s.”
He became interesting in a wider range of music in high school, particularly the great rock guitarists, among them Eddie Van Halen and Joe Satriani. He then attended the University of Southern Maine while studying history. The pull of performing music professionally turned out to be too strong to resist and he dropped out after 3 years to move to Nashville. Soon after arriving there he attracted attention while playing local clubs. He was the first Nashville musician to be offered an endorsement deal from Fender without first being signed to a label.
In a bid to win Hiland attention, his manager called Steve Vai and left a demo of his on Via’s voicemail. This earned Hiland a record deal on Vai’s Favored Nations record label. He worked for two years preparing his self-titled debut album, which was comprised of country and rock instrumentals and released in 2004. He has also become a successful session guitarists for well-known artists such as Ricky Skaggs, Toby Keith, and Randy Travis.
Other than his love of performing, Hiland has found a passion for instructing others on how to play. In 2014 teamed up with Truefire to release a series of instructional videos titled “Ten Gallon Guitar”. He also owns a studio that he uses to produce other musicians as well as record session guitar tracks for various artists.
We’re sure you’ll see in these performances from the Dallas International Guitar Festival in 2016, that Hiland is on a plane all his own. He is the modern king of chicken pickin’ guitar playing.

Born in Maine, blind, very overweight. Just shows you that a powerful will and commitment trump all other factors, even when it looks like everything's against you. Johnny is probably the very best at what he does alive on the planet today.

I don't believe he is underrated
Johnny hiland is one of the best and most sought after. Country. Studio. Session players
Not all great players. Seek fame
Some are fortunate to arrive at the revelation b4 it's 2 l8
Cuz after watching celebrity. Quality of life. It's more a burden than a blessing.
So being the power behind the throne is. Actually far more appealing a position as opposed to being forever thrust into the limelight
I'll bet most super famous celebrities would. Give. Anything to. Go back to a life that was just normal.
When your famous you can't just go for a hike by yourself or take a walk down a country road and take a piss on the side of the road and nobody be trying to glom your attention but that's gone forever when you're a celebrity Fame and Fortune are but crosses for us to bear and it is no enviable position such is all but smoke and mirrors my friends
More money just means more responsibility and you have to spend more of your mental energy focusing on keeping that money safe for it in the size of a large amount of money when it's an accumulative quantity and the power that follows in it's wake.
If you want the key to life the secret is maintenance of gratitude and then outwardly
Expressing said gratitude freely with a clear and glad heart
For this is the key to every door.
One who cannot pause to take stock of the little they. Have certainly is ill-equipped
To. Manage receiving their more when they cavelierly forsake the less that god has already blessed you with apparently , as you are living and breathing still
Humility imparts wisdom which in turn imparts grace and mercy be
Kind and. Considerate of yourself and others.
This is the. Action that follows a keen mind intent on understanding.
Our subconscious prefers to be truthful and at peace not in conflict so nipping in the bud any. Emotional. Imbalance that was promoted by a naive mind to immature to see how. . Such things are dangerous left unattended the matter whether you're right or wrong in your vitriol towards somebody who you think may have wronged you have you can forgive and move forward the balance of your mind and your intellectual prowess will be and it's a magna fold utmost point when you're young it's almost kind of sickening the idea of acquiescing to other people's unreasonable positions that they have towards you about you or whatever it is but such as but piss in the wind my young friends stay true to thine self as my dear mother would say rest her soul

I think both guitars are set for a different tone, look at the amps. Listen and you can hear Johnny has more of a brighter tone, and the Tele sounds a bit warmer to my ears. That way the guitars both cut through the mix in there own way, intermingling I think. That is my take on it and it sounds great.

He has not a played a Tele in a while. And basically you can get the single coil pickup sound from Tele Strat or any guitar with a single coil pick up I have a Tele and a Strat and can get that sound from my Strat. It also matters where you pick on the guitar if you pick closer to the bridge you get the more twangy sound. Not saying you do not know that already just making a point for those who don't know how to get the sound.
