- Another surprise performance at the Tribute to Nokie Edwards at CAAS. Joe Bonamassa joins Johnny Hiland for another song that Nokie recorded with The Ventures
Bob Patin keyboard, Kerry Marx guitar, Matt McKenzie bass.
How could anyone hate or say anything negative about either one of these shredding machines.👍👏
I don't understand that either. I suppose it gives them a way to massage their inferiority complex by pretending they're superior to these 2 great pickers? Personally, I could listen to either of both of these guys play all night long.
It's a matter of personal taste. There's no right or wrong to liking, or not liking someone's playing.
This was definitely shredding, but you can tell both these guys have a fully developed melodic sense, too…(that’s actually the hardest thing to come by…)
I had the pleasure and privilege to play acoustic rhythm guitar behind Johnny Hiland on recording session in Nashville!!! He is the most humble and nicest guy you ever want to meet!!!
I haven't had the pleasure to play with him, but you're right about him being a very nice guy.
Yes he is. Nicest guy I've ever met in the business but Derek St Holmes runs a very high 2nd 🎸🎸
@@steviesanders4994Agreed! Derek is a humble, yet very talented vocalist and holds his own on guitar as well!
The court reporter taking notes there in the back is crackin' me up!
Brilliant! Hahahaha
Johnny is like the Yngwie Malmsteen of country music , Bonamassa killed it with tone and tasteful friezing ! Both masters at their craft !
Johnnys is the yngwie of country...hahahahahahh so true !!!! Great comment
Johnny is a phenomenal musician and a very humble man. A superb guitarist who makes me want to try so much harder.
Johnny Hiland is so underrated. Bonamassa is an unbelievable player but sometimes JH just leaves me shaking my head at how you can even process everything he's pkaying. A+ to both of you, gentlemen.
They are both incredibly talented it’s really something to see these boys live what a beautiful thing
Never really heard Johnny H play before. I must say I'm impressed! He actually played the song. When Joe broke in he was just running scales. The dueling solo battle was fun!!
Shout out to the keys player playing exactly what needed to be played to support the guitar show. Great work from the whole band.
I like Joe Bonamassa very much and he is very very good, but Johnny Hiland is at the moment the best guitarist of the world.
That was so amazing!!! I love Joe Bonomassa ❤
Johnny Hiland is the king
I really appreciate Johnny’s ability to find and shred the melodic line at the beginning. I’ve seen him do it on other songs too. I’d be nervous as hell to get on stage with either of these greats!
Thank you.
I was there playing the tribute show. They are both humble friendly guys having a fun musical conversation. Comparisons speak only to the one comparing and not the performers. Nokie would be happy and I certainly know that Judy was very appreciative.
God Bless Nokie!!
Yes,I thought it was a great jam all the way.
Johnny Hiland is so good it's nearly impossible to believe. God damn....
Why are you cussing God? Apologize or you will go to hell along with all the other church going hypocrites.
I remember one night that Nokie got up to sit in with a local band that was doing a ventures medley. It was at the Branding Iron in Tacoma WA. Nokie had his blue Mosrite. As the band played through the medley their guitar player was playing all the leads. At one point Nokie looked over at me shrugged his shoulders and smiled. Think about having the guy on stage who played lead on all those hits and not having him play one melody of any of those songs. Like always he was just enjoying the moment and getting a kick out of the whole situation. Great talent and person. Judy and Nokie were meant for each other.
Wow! What were they thinking? I'm sure he took it in stride, but that is kinda insulting, isn't it!
Nokie Edwards was a great guy so talented and humble .
Other players are runnin' nice, but Johnny, he flies skyhigh, God bless him!
So here are two separate comments. As great as these two guys are I'm sure everyone has noticed the Godfather's influence; Mr. Eric Johnson. It's like listening to an encyclopedia of his licks and style. The nice thing is regardless of whose playing, that style always sounds so melodic.
Second - check Joe's smile at 5:33 when Johnny Hiland hits that run. He's like " Holy ****!!" Joe seemed to play for phrasing more so than just flat out speed, nice touch. And yes near the end Joe was ready to be done. Either way it is great to see two tremendously talented guys playing at this level. Bravo!!
That's some talent on that stage right there.
At 6:17, one of the best string bends I've ever heard. That Johnny Hiland signature Kiesel guitar he has is awesome.
Sun Sparkle had it screaming!
It sounded like James Brown came in and gave his YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAH. Amazing playing and you can feel Johnnys energy. Man doesn't stop smiling xD
With Johnny and Joe on the stage and the Master looking down from the banner behind them, this is guitar royalty right here.
For those of you comparing, youre watching two different style guitars come together. There is no comparison. They are two FANTASTIC guitarist in each of their own aspect.
Very political correct, infect Johnny whooped Joe's ass!.
@@teunio501 I can't even insult such a stupid statement
Smokin! Johnny and Joe both sound great!
Johnny handed Bonamassa his ass on a plate. Joe sounded like a like Noodle!!!
wow, they both put on a show...great interaction, you could tell that they are both having a "blast" trying to out do each other...thanks for posting!
I have never been more proud of Joe B then in this clip. After a while it was like the more Johnny was throwing screaming runs out the more Joe was trying to bring it back to a melodic place. Both incredible musicians but one will be a legend regardless of the haters. Plus he was adjusting the amp and his mic the whole time because he is a freaking pro who refuses to have a crappy sound. I respect the hell out of that.
Everybody gets too critical these days and forget the whole idea with music is if it feels good for only one second it's done its job.
Thanks dad.
AMEN BROTHER!
I guess it's about time to admit that Bonamassa is really freakin' good
@@mikemorgan548 I admitted that 10 years ago... Where you been?
Bonamassa is probably one of my top 3 guitarists. Ever. Gotta say Johnny out picked him this time. Both phenomenal musicians and seemingly really classy and humble guys.
I thought it was a good mutual jam.
Sounds like a couple of GREAT guitar players having a good time playing with one another. So glad to see Joe in Nashville so maybe even more of this stuff will be coming out.
It's foolish to make comparisons, they are both fabulous guitarists.
Comparing is a waste of time. Just like what you hear
Hey Hambone! How's your Summer?
Roy Brown great summer here.
I'm vegetarian so no Hambone
It's been a very hot and sticky summer. Working on a recording project and still a long way to go. Have a female singer songwriter coming up in September from Florida. Will be recording and producing several originals for her, in addition to my own project which is underway. As far as dealing with local musicians I am so over all of it.Nothing but ego, arrogance, and cliques. Went and saw Robben Ford in concert last week. Fabulous talent, great show. one of my favorites for sure and has been for about 20 years now.
Hiland is on another planet. Amazing player.
No need for any comparisons, both played great guitar.
Johnny Hiland + Joe Bonamassa = 🎇🎆🎉✨🏅🏅🏆🏆🎖🎖🎆🎇
Johnny and Joe really give "Born to be wild" a great run for it! Johnny sounds amazing with that new JH Kiesel signature guitar of his! God bless you guys!!
bullhunter45 ha ha god... what’s that genocidal maniac got to do with it?
Boring
@@bullhunter45 guess I missed something...
@@fearnpol4938 Always that one angry little sinner with an axe to grind.
2 incredible guitarists. Both with incredible speed. Glen Campbell in the same league.
One thing I appreciate about Joe is they way he stays involved with the community. Got to say, Joe had this, no contest.
contest? Why do you think this is a contest?
@@snogglemonkey huh?
I have seen Joe shred and play incredibly fast on many occasions. One of his mentors was Danny Gatton for goodness sakes so he has that capability. Joe is not trying to get into a wankfest with Johnny where Johnny is eager to grab some attention for himself by outshining a "guitar star". I don't blame him because Johnny Hiland is not exactly a household name where Joe Bonamassa is force in the blues and guitar communities. Joe is being cool about it and not trying to "outduel" the other guitarslinger. Class.
I remember playing with Gatton back in the day and in walks this 12-year-old kid. I'm thinking, what's this kid gonna do? Holy crap! :) That's what he's gonna do! It doesn't get any better than this.
True. I was there playing the tribute (Walk Don't Run). I was friends with Nokie and still with Judy. It's the first time I've met JB. A classy guy and very cordial and authentic.
Amazing guitar soloing and duetting by Johnny and Joe 🙂👍🏽
It appears Johnny Hiland is the new humbler.
I've watched a lot of Johnny Hiland videos and regardless of the style, he never strays too far from his country roots.
Hell Yes !!
There's no room to complain about Johnny vs. Joe. This isn't a competition, but if it was then both have their own respectable styles. They both did a fantastic job! Enjoy the talent of these professionals.
Notice how J.B. had a completely clean amp with no overdrive or sustain pedals yet still seemed to hold his own in a foreign jam session with two other guitarists with their sound dialed in just right..
Impressive...Joe did look at his watch though 7:26 X)) Like - "We Dun Yet?"
122Music1 prob not foreign, they had a rehearsal for sure.
Johnny just handed Bonamassa his ass on a plate!!!
It's not that hard. You gotta realize Joe is a veteran and knows his shit on amps boutique. He's a live musician!
The guy in the middle could turn around and within half measure have what he wants. I mean you've got an a guy who has played arenas as a guest to the more rotund gentleman so the last thing he wants to do is even appear to try to upstage the host. They havin fun.
@@JOESEMTEX69 Jesus H Christ! Can you at least come up with a different ree tarded line??? How about a little originality?
I'm a huge JB fan and think he is incredible. Gotta say though that if ever Joe has been smoked, that was it!! Johnny Hiland, what a force of nature. Both unbelievable players and seem like really nice guys to boot! :)
Wow. It was Joe bringing the country vibes!! Right on!!
Wow! What a pleasure watching these to maestros work!
Joe's Tele tone is absolutely amazing!
Great modern sounding tone from Johnny but Joe's was the more traditional classic Tele sound.
Ghat daym I love Johnny hiland and Joe Bonamassa 🤩
Gotta smile at this one. The "Chet Atkins Appreciation Society" brings out Johnny Hiland and Joe B. as a tribute to Nokie Edwards and they do Steppenwolf's biggest song.
This is not a bad rap on any of this, I think it shows what a small world the love of music is.
Not a thumb picker on the CAAS stage. Doesn’t say much for promoting thumb picking music. These guys are good but this is not the place for them.
@@bgdenham Such a shame we lost Toy Caldwell , Not a thumb as fast as his was anywhere I've ever seen. If there is please send any clip you have ,that i would love to see cause his moved like lightning . Toy would have been one to be here.
@@bgdenham it was a tribute to nokie, was he a thumb picker?
Tim, Nokia played with a Thumbpick but played mainly rolls. He showed me his signature roll at CAAS one year if you like I will share it with you.
I can hear the words in every note! Absoloutely fabulous!!!!
love these guys!!
Great guitarists in admiration each other having fun doesn't get much better .
Greatest version of that song ever!!!
I wish John Kay was there to sing it
Such a fun song.. Rock Me Baby.. by Steppenwolf was my song in High School. Ha, one of them.
Thanks for sharing.
We were all Born To Be Wild... ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
I have a whole new respect for Johnny Hiland, what a great player, as well as Joe coming into an arrangement he had probably never played before, two ahhhhhhhh some artistsins of the guitar..
Both are at the top of the guitar world, but sometimes vids like this make me appreciate David Gilmour more and more. You can literally feel every single note he plays. Less is more sometimes.
I love pink floyd...but Gilmour couldnt sharpen these guy's pencils.
@Bob Richardson, and yet, he has composed solos that you will never forget. Veritable masterpieces 🤘
To the commentors: just because both Johnny and Joe are unbelievable monster players doesn't mean everything is a competition. Both Johnny and Joe would tell you that they enjoyed the performance and both support each other and appreciate what they bring to the table. Good grief man!
exactly!
Two of my Favorite players!!
Mr. Johnny Hiland is a "GREAT GUITARIST AND FROM I SEEN AND HEARD ONE OF THE MOST HUMBLE MUSICIAN'S YOU WILL EVER MEET"BUT HANDS DOWN A GREAT GUITARIST!!!!!!!!
The best of the best....!!! 🙂
Been a fan of Johhny for years. This is great to see!
Joe bonamassa and Johnny hiland this is a dream come true
...and one day just like that boom 💥 there is Johnny Hiland!! Giving big guys like Bonamassa run for their money!
That's some wicked-ass call and response! Go boys, go!
2:of my favorite guitar players!!! Thank you for the upload
fantastic
Two Guys at the top of their game having fun!
Cool, 2 of the best having fun and shredding!
A wonderful exchange of two great players,..BRAVO!!
great song...Hiland brought this one home..so good, Kerry Marx right there too
The always sensational Joe Bonamassa!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Big fan of joes, but Johnny is THEE man !
Joes Volume swells were tastful.
Johnny's tone was out of this world good.
Johnny Hiland is really really good!!!
Kinda funny them playing this song, seeing as they kinda look like the crew in the diner scene in Easyrider and the guys in the pick up truck with the shotgun! A certain irony I suppose! 😂😂 But boy, seeing these 2 Tele-Masters for one song is worth the price of admission! One upmanship at it's finest! Thanks for posting this! Peace.
When Johnny hits that low bend, Joe was like, damnit that was good haha. Fun watching these two great players have fun!
I'm trying to figure out what Joe was saying to the other guy.
2 killer guitarists. aint nobody smoken anybody
That was fun
Love it! The back and forth talk on guitar
two fantastic talents.......blowing it!
Johnny's playing is just humbling.
This made me happy
Of the three , Hiland #1.
WOW. Look at the smile's. So good!!!
They were both on fire.
You guys are slaying this song!!!
This is probably the first time I've propperly loved Joe playing - don't get me wrong I know he's next level awesome... but in this context I'm totally sold. Country does that though lol
love the way these two feed off (not compete) with each other
both of these guys are amazing accomplished guitarist i don't think they were competing to see who is better that is just what plebs like us think because we are trash compared to these too shred machines
Finally something is said that I can agree with
boys having fun, so good
Just ridiculously good!!
Boy's Just Wanna Have FUN!!!
Unreal
Simply Awesome.
Joe can more than hold his own here. Quite impressive.
Two of my favorites!
Johnny needs a Fender. This vid is great! Two monsters of the guitar come together!! Love it!!!
These comments! Both are great in their own way!
Two of my favorites! Jam on fellas
Johnny can hang with anybody, but this a good showdown of talent.
Vindt t helemaal te gek.Een verrijking van je leven
