I agree with Vin - I have always wondered "what happened to the Depeche Mode sound" after Ultra and watching this video, I understand how Martin's song writing purity was muddied by other people who, in the end, didn't compliment his writing but kind of watered it down. Every now and then ("Wrong" and "Come back") they hit it perfectly and sound like Depeche Mode again but then again on the same album you have Jezebel. Please, please understand, I am nobody. Just an electronic musician, engineer and sound designer that grew up with DM as well as OMD, Kraftwerk, New Order etc, but I can sense a rhythm to the albums and DM was so incredibly SOLID from Speak and Spell all the way through to Ultra. I can listen to all tracks on all of the albums and they hold interest even to this day - which is an incredible feat for any band - and I'm not sure any other band has done this - but suffice to say, DM for me are those 9 albums and anything after is just another group. Which is fine - you may not agree - but I just wait for those moments of brilliance like Wrong, to come along to add to my joy of listening to DM...
I do somewhat agree with you, but I really thought "Playing the Angel" was quite a strong album and David's songwriting really helped the album overall.

Lost interest, but later when i started to listen to them again on occasion and now looking back at their whole career, it is hard not to agree with @Alesismmt8 and yes, they sure had great songs after Ultra/SOFAD, but that true, magic DM where everything fitted perfectly was gone. There is no denying that. Had they called it quits back then, man, they would be ....can you imagine a band like that? Except Speak & Spell, which is just funny and terrible, haha, but since A broken frame - Ultra/SOFAD, pure perfection. But they keep selling out stadiums so i better shut my mouth, haha!

There are a couple tracks on Delta Machine and Memento Mori that hit the DM mark IMO --> especially Heaven and Ghosts Again, but also "Before We Drown", "Angel", and a few others.
Dave said it... They needed some one to fill the missing 4th member, Alan Wilder. The sound of post AW DM really says "something major is missing from the music" .
One of my favorite ones. Atmospheric, addicting, beautiful....along with Ultra that is much stronger, darker they two are just beautifully balanced. Listening to Ultra wakes up my senses, Exciter calms them. 2 beautiful albums. My favorites.

I love Depeche, they are one of the most important groups of all time, and I rate Martin, Dave and Fletch highly, but the veiled disrespect for Alan is well on show here, they were no where near as good without him and they all know it. Hence the arrival of a lot of engineers and co-producers There were some good songs for sure, but the albums were not cohesive at all. With the die hard fans saying it's the band being experimental (No the songs were mediocre)Alan was the ultimate arranger for them. My love for the band started to fall at this point.

Exciter is one of my favourite DM albums, alongside with Some Great Reward, Music for the Masses, Songs of Faith and Devotion and Ultra. They should put the Exciter songs on their set lists again.
The Black celebration live version of this concert is incredible, it is clear Martin’s tracks are immortal in any form, even as covers… ps: and if you are curious, yes I love Alan too
Black Celebration is my favourite song of all time, including all artists and genres, and they absolutely massacred it in 2001. I was in tears at the concert of how fucking awful it was.

Curiously enough, Exciter is an album that needs to be heard with a distance. At the time of its release, it was my least favourite Depeche album, by quite some margin. I didn't like most of the songs, apart from Dream On and the Sweetest Condition. As the album (and myself, obviously) got older, my perception of it changed. By no means is it my favourite Depeche album now, it's not even in my top 5 Depeche albums, but it's a lot better than most people, including myself, gave it credit for.
Exciter may have been considered the red-haired stepchild of their discography on its time of release, but its not hard to see how it would've succeeded in the modern music era. The production style and synth layers of Exciter remind me a lot of Jack Antonoff's works.

DM running on Fumes. This new stuff is not up to par. They still have a good back catalog of hit songs they can rely on in live shows. But the new material is not making it.
Starting 2001 I had just been out of a rough time in my professional/personal life so maybe I matched with the peaceful and bright mood I found in this album. Have you noticed there are no power snares-drums recorded in it? Was very funny to see in "A Night in Paris" a blooper when Dave move his arms towards Christian like asking to push some power starting "The Dead of Night" and Eigner's expression is like "Sorry Dave, wrong starting song to ask for it!" :-D I still love Freelove lyrics, the small interludes inserted are perfect, pictures in that pool are awesome and I love that picture inside that shows my country in the wall (México). I thought it was subliminal, but they didn't come.
even this (in my opinion) "strange" album as a whole has its own vibe that I totally love. The weirder this album gets the better. Where my zombies at!! :)

I dont get the hate for "The dead of Night", I absolutely love it. I love the horror stomp of it, the weird, zany noises, the outlandishness of it. Reminds me of shock rock, and me being a massive Metal fan, it utterly fits me. Equally great to me is the exciting beats and sounds of "I feel Loved". Unfortunately despite a couple of other lovely lush atmospheric songs like Freelove and When the Body Speaks, "Exciter"s overall bright but dull vibes feel flat. If people love it as a chilled out album, thats great. But its quite lifeless in many places and lacks real presence, 'cept for a few stand out songs.
The most ironically named album in history ?? I made my own version of this. Threw away the horrific Dead Of Night and I Feel Loved, and you’re left with a gently, sparkling thing. Late night DM. Intimate and fragile. Those two tracks I got rid of, they’re so out of place. The last thing the delicate When The Body Speaks needs is Dead Of Night staggering in vomiting and flailing around like your worst drunken uncle at a family wedding. Same with IFL. Exciter works as a twinkly elektro album made up of lullabies and ballads.
Exciter is really good album, but I feel it like "Porsche that rides 60 km/h". It is somehow "braked", I think that boys could afford to experiment much more with the sound. And also, it is first album with Martin songs that I really hate. One Caress, Home, Sweetest perfection, they are really good...and then come such a weak track like Breathe or Comatose...
Agree 100% Martin fell in love with his vibrato during this album, now it's like he can't sing without it. I do like Eternal for the post apocalyptic mood, and fail for the political statement. But songs like Breathe, Jezebel, Damaged People, the Child Inside etc. Are self-agrandizing shit. He's so good when he simplifies his voice and just feels what he wrote.
Speak and Spell through SOFAD are masterpieces, up there with Beatles, Zeppelin, Smiths. Ultra was really good, about half of the album was up to par. I feel every album since Exciter is a completely different band. I understand they have contributed an enormous gift to the world through their music and they are one of my favorite bands. I still hold out for hope that they'll bring Alan back for a final album. It would be like the Beatles getting back together.

I agree. No Wilder, no DM. I wonder if Wilder will return to the band? DM probably still have one more album in them and if Wilder is involved, Depeche Mode can regain their old glory and go out with a bang.

This was the beginning of the not always great material point. Theres a few good songs. Just nothing like year’s passed. Playing The Angel was a nice “Up”, Delta Machine a serious disappointment (but a few great songs), Sounds of The Universe a decent record, and the worst was Spirit.
@@nathanquiring3003 most long term fans really find it pretty lackluster, even their least favorite. I think it lacks the layers and is dull, compared to most of their music. Obviously it has some brighter moments here and there. But.. it is a personal opinion
One good song on spirit, So much love the rest sound nothing like Depeche Mode they're no longer an electronic band they just include a couple of songs in that style on each album to keep the old fans quiet.
Ofc last good tour, Dave was full of energy, Martin too and the setlist... Halo,Waiting for the night and Clean, something different instead of Policy of truth,World in my eyes...

I appreciate the band trying to survive. Wish i could respect their choice of not including Alan Wilder in their Hall of Fame incpduction...he earned the inclusion. That was a classless move of an insecure band who makes alright music now..not bad but just cannot seem to reach the stèllar heights they haď befofe without effort.
No amount of sound engineering can replace Alan Wilder. The band know that and they are insecure about it and it shows. Ultra and Playing the Angel were the last true DM sounding albums, the rest is not. Exciter wasn't a bad album, despite what people say. When I first listen to it, I thought it was bad. Then after a couple of listens (after several months gap), it grew on me. Some songs are a bit weak like I Feel Loved. I don't like that song. But that's my taste. Others may like it! The album is still better the last one, that Spirit rubbish.
It may be unfortunate that Ultra was among the better DM albums (some would put it top five). Had Exciter been the album that came out after SOFAD, DM might have invited Alan back.
@@Goryptor If you compare Sounds of the Universe to other albums, it is better than what was and is still being made today. It's well crafted and the songs are good. But compared to itself, it reminds of Speak and Spell. It's a polished Speak and Spell, but it's not what expect from DM. If I find a song difficult to listen to or I don't like a song, later on that song will grow on me. This did not happen with the albums after Playing the Angel. And thanks for commenting. :)
@@Kickingit06 I don't know if Alan would have come back. I came across an interview of him talking about DM, and he didn't seem too happy. He was discussing a few tracks about Playing the Angel and called them over-processed with no atmosphere. Maybe now that Fletch is no more there may be a chance. So far I haven't heard if Alan is back in the studio making new music. At first I didn't like Ultra, but now I like it. Definitely better than last three albums, Spirit included. Actually, Spirit has no spirit. It's dead as dead can be.
Woah, that concert at around the 20 min mark is awful, Black Celebration? Seriously? Also Dave's singing is not what it was before. I had lost interest back in the day after Violator, up till then they were my everything. So i say all of that with hindsight, must have been around 2007 or so when i started to listen to them again occasionally. I liked Free Love when i saw the video on MTV, but the magic sure was gone, again, partly due to myself. Then the cover? Phallic? That is sth i would never, ever associate with that plant. Also, the weakest cover since Singles 81-85, haha. Terrible. Then of course the choice of Eigner, double bass drum rock drummer with zero ....well, i guess not zero but you all know what i mean and feel the exact same as i do, so..... That just leaves the admiration of Dave Gahan as a front man. Seriously, i mean their whole look back in the day was so perfect, a band, a true band, a gang, perfection. But him alone, besides his phenomenal voice, his stature, his dress code, his dancing, his feel, his .....one sexy mother and pair him with the likes of Martin Gore and Alan Wilder, how lucky these 4 men are and were. Fantastic team around them and voilà , you got a band! But nobody would have held it against them, had they called it quits after Ultra, right?

IMO this is one of their weaker albums - I think Mark Bell's production is perfect for Bjork but not suitable for Depeche. It doesn't help that Martin was completely uninspired and Dave wasnt allowed to contribute songs yet. It's in that lower tier for me with stuff like "Sounds of the Universe" and "Construction Time Again"
La verdad es el álbum más flojo Depeche Mode junto al Construction...y no es malo pero si algunas de las canciones dejan mucho que desear y escucharlo todo resulta aburrido I Feel Loved se siente muy fuera de lugar es una canción dance pop que fácilmente podría cantarla Madonna pero Freelove me parece una de sus mejores canciones incluso mejor que Dream On pero siento que en el vídeo si lo están sobrevalorando
"Dream On" must be one of the lamest singles ever made by Depeche. I dont know what it is but I never liked the song. Its kind of like "Weres The Revolution" from the last record. Its unbelieving how they choose that as the first single on that album.
Good that tastes are different. I think it is one of the best singles they ever released. And it perfectly sums up what is amazing and awesome about Exciter.

This album is pretty much trash except for 2 or 3 songs. I stopped going to Depeche Mode concerts after the Ultra tour. I still can't believe they opened those shows with the laborious Dead of Night. I remember feeling like they sucked the energy out of the venue with that one. It felt like it took forever for the shows to feel exciting after that lethargic opener.

El peor disco es Speak and Spell y con diferencia. Una bazofia de pop masticable y pegajoso, del calibre de los que hace Vince Clarke. Solo le salva Photographic. Por suerte, se marchó tras ese disco, de lo contrario Depeche no hubiera continuado existiendo.

Nada. Es un excelente disco. Se separaron de la era oscura, de Wilder, pero... (tomando en cuenta que Wilder uso una base de I am You en su mezcla de In Chains del 2011)... Podria concluir que el disco Exciter con Wilder tendría un toque más... Exciter. Más delicado y relax, digamos. Pero no es el peor disco. Ahora, Delta Machine... no.

I'm a lifelong DM fan but I'm a bit of a cliche too in agreeing with many fans, post Wilder (Ultra being the exception) there's only glimpses of greatness. Most albums since then sound like a bunch of low quality B sides.

Despite the album has some terrific songs, only Freelove and When the Body Speaks has been performed some times after Exciter tour. So, the album has not stand the time. Unlike Ultra, which half of songs have been performed later tours a lot.
I dont get the hate for "The dead of Night", I absolutely love it. I love the horror stomp of it, the weird, zany noises, the outlandishness of it. Reminds me of shock rock, and me being a massive Metal fan, it utterly fits me. Equally great to me is the exciting beats and sounds of "I feel Loved". Unfortunately despite a couple of other lovely lush atmospheric songs like Freelove and When the Body Speaks, "Exciter"s overall bright but dull vibes feel flat. If people love it as a chilled out album, thats great. But its quite lifeless in many places and lacks real presence, 'cept for a few stand out songs.

I made my own version of this. Threw away the horrific Dead Of Night and I Feel Loved, and you’re left with a gently, sparkling thing. Late night DM. Intimate and fragile.
Those two tracks I got rid of, they’re so out of place. The last thing the delicate When The Body Speaks needs is Dead Of Night staggering in vomiting and flailing around like your worst drunken uncle at a family wedding. Same with IFL. Exciter works as a twinkly elektro album made up of lullabies and ballads.
One of their best albums.

Exciter is really good album, but I feel it like "Porsche that rides 60 km/h". It is somehow "braked", I think that boys could afford to experiment much more with the sound. And also, it is first album with Martin songs that I really hate. One Caress, Home, Sweetest perfection, they are really good...and then come such a weak track like Breathe or Comatose...
Agree 100% Martin fell in love with his vibrato during this album, now it's like he can't sing without it. I do like Eternal for the post apocalyptic mood, and fail for the political statement. But songs like Breathe, Jezebel, Damaged People, the Child Inside etc. Are self-agrandizing shit. He's so good when he simplifies his voice and just feels what he wrote.
Speak and Spell through SOFAD are masterpieces, up there with Beatles, Zeppelin, Smiths. Ultra was really good, about half of the album was up to par. I feel every album since Exciter is a completely different band. I understand they have contributed an enormous gift to the world through their music and they are one of my favorite bands. I still hold out for hope that they'll bring Alan back for a final album. It would be like the Beatles getting back together.

I agree. No Wilder, no DM. I wonder if Wilder will return to the band? DM probably still have one more album in them and if Wilder is involved, Depeche Mode can regain their old glory and go out with a bang.

This was the beginning of the not always great material point. Theres a few good songs. Just nothing like year’s passed. Playing The Angel was a nice “Up”, Delta Machine a serious disappointment (but a few great songs), Sounds of The Universe a decent record, and the worst was Spirit.

@@nathanquiring3003 most long term fans really find it pretty lackluster, even their least favorite. I think it lacks the layers and is dull, compared to most of their music. Obviously it has some brighter moments here and there.
But.. it is a personal opinion
One good song on spirit, So much love the rest sound nothing like Depeche Mode they're no longer an electronic band they just include a couple of songs in that style on each album to keep the old fans quiet.

I appreciate the band trying to survive. Wish i could respect their choice of not including Alan Wilder in their Hall of Fame incpduction...he earned the inclusion. That was a classless move of an insecure band who makes alright music now..not bad but just cannot seem to reach the stèllar heights they haď befofe without effort.
Alan and Vince were both included but did not attend the online ceremony.
No amount of sound engineering can replace Alan Wilder. The band know that and they are insecure about it and it shows. Ultra and Playing the Angel were the last true DM sounding albums, the rest is not. Exciter wasn't a bad album, despite what people say. When I first listen to it, I thought it was bad. Then after a couple of listens (after several months gap), it grew on me. Some songs are a bit weak like I Feel Loved. I don't like that song. But that's my taste. Others may like it! The album is still better the last one, that Spirit rubbish.
Sounds of the Universe is one of my favourite DM records. The atmosphere captured there is really cosmic at times.
It may be unfortunate that Ultra was among the better DM albums (some would put it top five). Had Exciter been the album that came out after SOFAD, DM might have invited Alan back.
@@Goryptor If you compare Sounds of the Universe to other albums, it is better than what was and is still being made today. It's well crafted and the songs are good. But compared to itself, it reminds of Speak and Spell. It's a polished Speak and Spell, but it's not what expect from DM. If I find a song difficult to listen to or I don't like a song, later on that song will grow on me. This did not happen with the albums after Playing the Angel. And thanks for commenting. :)
@@Kickingit06 I don't know if Alan would have come back. I came across an interview of him talking about DM, and he didn't seem too happy. He was discussing a few tracks about Playing the Angel and called them over-processed with no atmosphere. Maybe now that Fletch is no more there may be a chance. So far I haven't heard if Alan is back in the studio making new music. At first I didn't like Ultra, but now I like it. Definitely better than last three albums, Spirit included. Actually, Spirit has no spirit. It's dead as dead can be.

Woah, that concert at around the 20 min mark is awful, Black Celebration? Seriously? Also Dave's singing is not what it was before. I had lost interest back in the day after Violator, up till then they were my everything. So i say all of that with hindsight, must have been around 2007 or so when i started to listen to them again occasionally. I liked Free Love when i saw the video on MTV, but the magic sure was gone, again, partly due to myself.
Then the cover? Phallic? That is sth i would never, ever associate with that plant. Also, the weakest cover since Singles 81-85, haha. Terrible. Then of course the choice of Eigner, double bass drum rock drummer with zero ....well, i guess not zero but you all know what i mean and feel the exact same as i do, so.....
That just leaves the admiration of Dave Gahan as a front man. Seriously, i mean their whole look back in the day was so perfect, a band, a true band, a gang, perfection. But him alone, besides his phenomenal voice, his stature, his dress code, his dancing, his feel, his .....one sexy mother and pair him with the likes of Martin Gore and Alan Wilder, how lucky these 4 men are and were. Fantastic team around them and voilà , you got a band! But nobody would have held it against them, had they called it quits after Ultra, right?

IMO this is one of their weaker albums - I think Mark Bell's production is perfect for Bjork but not suitable for Depeche. It doesn't help that Martin was completely uninspired and Dave wasnt allowed to contribute songs yet. It's in that lower tier for me with stuff like "Sounds of the Universe" and "Construction Time Again"

La verdad es el álbum más flojo Depeche Mode junto al Construction...y no es malo pero si algunas de las canciones dejan mucho que desear y escucharlo todo resulta aburrido I Feel Loved se siente muy fuera de lugar es una canción dance pop que fácilmente podría cantarla Madonna pero Freelove me parece una de sus mejores canciones incluso mejor que Dream On pero siento que en el vídeo si lo están sobrevalorando

"Dream On" must be one of the lamest singles ever made by Depeche. I dont know what it is but I never liked the song.
Its kind of like "Weres The Revolution" from the last record.
Its unbelieving how they choose that as the first single on that album.
Good that tastes are different. I think it is one of the best singles they ever released. And it perfectly sums up what is amazing and awesome about Exciter.

This album is pretty much trash except for 2 or 3 songs. I stopped going to Depeche Mode concerts after the Ultra tour. I still can't believe they opened those shows with the laborious Dead of Night. I remember feeling like they sucked the energy out of the venue with that one. It felt like it took forever for the shows to feel exciting after that lethargic opener.

Soy un fan que tiene a DM como el soundtrack de su vida y este disco es el que menos me gusta aunque no lo considero malo por sus temas, es la producción lo que me parece desacertada. Para disco malo tienes Spirits.
El peor disco es Speak and Spell y con diferencia. Una bazofia de pop masticable y pegajoso, del calibre de los que hace Vince Clarke. Solo le salva Photographic. Por suerte, se marchó tras ese disco, de lo contrario Depeche no hubiera continuado existiendo.

Nada. Es un excelente disco. Se separaron de la era oscura, de Wilder, pero... (tomando en cuenta que Wilder uso una base de I am You en su mezcla de In Chains del 2011)... Podria concluir que el disco Exciter con Wilder tendría un toque más... Exciter. Más delicado y relax, digamos. Pero no es el peor disco.
Ahora, Delta Machine... no.
