I believe the explanation is that it has a double row of field coils for a bit more power and maneuverability. An odd workaround when the obvious solution is to have two nacelles.
Guys I have a sad tale to tell. Many years ago my wife got me an Ambassador class giant model - from the USA. The shipping alone was £150 -$200. It took me many month's with loving care to make it. The ship was 4 foot and was so awesome. After completion I placed it on our Welsh dresser and went to bed. It the morning it looked like 20 Borg cubes had attacked it - it has fallen off the dresser. I went to work with tears in my eyes.😄
I actually like the Freedom Class. It reminds me of the Saladin Class from the old technical manual and later FASA. Contrary to Rodenberry's edict about the nacelle configuration, I'm quite fond of single and triple nacelle configs on starships.
Rodenberry only made the "two nacelle rule" to discredit the technical manual over a pay dispute with its Author so I've never given any of his "rules" any credibility
Honestly, sounds like a perfect hero ship for a spin-off. The ONCE armed and armored to the teeth black sheep of the Federation, those squeaky-clean folks love to pretend never existed. Now pressed into some form of reservist role, because the dang thing might be obsolete, but... It. Just. Won't. Die. So like, Lower Decks showing some of the NOT best of the best. But an entire backwater ship that gets into trouble. That sort of premise.
I had no idea that the Freedom class had three torpedo launchers. However I read years ago that this single nacelle in fact consisted of two Warp coils instead of one.
Yes. Firebrand was Lost Era ship, as most destroyed in Wolf 359. In fact is is somewhat bizarre that we never see those ships again. Even if we do see older TMP designs, constantly. Though they probably were constructed in relatively low number, after Earth formed alliance with Klingon's.
The problem with exploring and “opening up every door” you can to see whats on the other side is your letting in whoever or whatever is on the other side. Eventually you will find someone who is hostile and belligerent also being much more advanced than you. Kinda like the borg, or the dominion… Once some doors are open you can’t close it.
except in the case of the dominion, cause the prophets sealed the wormhole for any further dominion ships traveling to the alpha quadrant, but that's a special & exceptional case.
This is why the USS Kelvin is a ship that can truly exist in the cannon of Star Trek. Single Nacelle ships existed well after it in multiple forms, like the Saladin class, Hermes Class, and the freedom class in this video. Personally though, I think out of them all, the USS Kelvin was more robust due to its specially designed dual coil single enlarged nacelle which could provide a stable warp field, full sized impulse engines, as well as a secondary hull module with a deflector dish and shuttle bay. Something no other single Nacelle starship that I have seen has tried to replicate.
I love this ship, I have a real weakness for Starship designs that have more or less than the normal 2 nacelles. If I could choose only one of the vaguely canon but never seen clearly on screen ships to get a full appearance in something, it would be the freedom class.
Love the title, loved the video, love that despite Gene Roddenberry's frankly nonsensical hatred of odd number of warp engine nacelles, they've become a more common thing now.
That is a urban legend. While there are reasons for Roddenberry Rule, exceptions were easy to explain in the lore. In fact Freedom does clearly has dual nacelle, as indicated by two Busard intakes.
I look at the Freedom Class as nothing more than defensive, transports, or escort ships used to defend the Sol and immediate surrounding systems. Anything out those areas and systems makes it non-feasible.
"Its cannon" means "the cannon belonging to this ship." "It's canon" means "this ship is part of the accepted fabric of Star Trek lore." I don't know what you are trying to say here with your title: It has cannon. It is cannon. ??
Star Fleet Command: "The neck that connect the ship to the engine is weak." "Lets put windows in the neck." "The saucer is thin and flat too!" "Lets cover it with ceiling windows and floor windows." "Should we throw it up against a humongous metal brick?" "I dont see why not."
"It was equipped with two phaser systems, in the same way that the Defiant-Class would be, but at the time, this was the first ship to try this." Methinks the Miranda, with its phaser banks and two heavy phaser cannons, could constitute an earlier ship with two different phaser systems.
In the Starfleet Battles game, the one nacelle destroyer class has the same weapon load out as the base Constellation Heavy Cruiser, just not the energy to use them as effectively. It’s a bit of a glass cannon that can’t walk and chew bubblegum at the same time.
The reason given was that the ship was designed for "long range fire support". Which ties it into fleet use, a strange restriction for a small ship that could, with fewer weapons, actually be much more useful.
I always liked the Freedom class, as well as the Saladin, I’ve always loved oddball designs in both real life and sci-fi, and single-nascelle ships fall into that
This is my favorite ugly duckling in the Federation navy. I can acknowledge that, objectively, it is poorly designed, but I can’t help but see it as a really cool patrol ship and light explorer.
Let’s be honest. It was a one off ship designed to test the full size Galaxy nacelle design. It was also likely the test bed for the Galaxy class warp core. Hence forth why it was o close to Wolf 359’ad it was likely in the Sol system at whatever testing facilities they may have. It’s an Ambassador saucer on a connie neck. All parts they had laying around, as their was quite a few Ambassador saucer modules built (Jupiter Station).
I just wonder whether part of Starfleet's thinking behind this class of ship is that it would be relatively quick to build a lot more of them if a serious conflict broke out. Of course by the time of the Dominion War other designs had come along to fill the same role instead.
I always liked the forgotten ships of BoBW. They were nice contemporaries to the Galaxy-class, instead of the century-old Miranda and Excelsior classes. Would have made more sense in the DS9 battles. Alas, we never got to see them again....
This design always struck me as so strange… I don’t have a problem with the single nacelle design, but why not have it straight under the saucer, rather than slung back? Or maybe it could have just been in the middle of the saucer/attached, since you don’t have the radiation between nacelles or whatever that 2 nacelles need to be extended away on pylons
Considering a normal phaser array's damage, and then how big that cannon is, I have to assume this baby punches WAY above her weight class. However it's also the epitome of this era of Fed design--it works great until it doesn't, and then you're wondering why it's so badly designed...
Type 8 phasers? That cannot be right. The Freedom class uses phaser strips, where developed to support Type 9 and Type 10 phasers. Specifically, Type 9 phaser strips as showcased on the Ambassador class. Type 8 phasers are incompatible with phaser strips.
