  • A digital discouragement campaign targeting young British men is being pushed out by the Dutch city's council.
It comes as part of efforts to clean up Amsterdam's raunchy reputation as Europe's most liberal party capital.
The online ads, highlighting the risks associated with the excessive use of drugs and booze, show young men staggering in the street handcuffed by police, finger-printed and having their mugshots taken.

So lets start a racist and sexist campaign against a certain group, that'll show them that you are better... man you have a loose grip on reality. Because we all know that those are the only tourists going to amsterdam and causing issues. It is just like when I was in asia, they were very against the foreign soldiers causing problems and it would hit the news all the time but the native population had almost 10x the number of incidents in the areas they were concerned about and nothing was ever said.

They love blaming foreigners ( especially non white one) when their cities get destroyed after a football games when videos shows its clearly them. They went to blame arabs, indian and black french people when again they are hundrends of videos showing the british fan being violent toward security and the french police officer . To stop the idiotic behaviour abroad, we need to stop it here first. We as a nation of a pubs and clubs need tighter restrictions on when to stop serving someone and harsher punishments for drunk and disorderly behaviour. Law actually states that establishments cannot sell alcohol to someone drunk, but nowhere enforces it until the person is borderline unconscious.

This reminds me of when I was a young man in the 1980s living in Greece, surviving by picking oranges. After work I'd hang out with people from all over Europe, from Spain, Portugal, Italy, Austria, Norway, Sweden, France and also Australians, South Africans, South Americans and more. We'd hang out in restaurants in the evenings, and we of course enjoyed some beers, wine and brandy.
It didn't take long to learn that if you sat next to some young Brits, they'd drink for the first hour, then get loud during the next hour, then get completely abnoxious soon after and often fist fights would break out. So we'd move to another restaurant as soon as they showed up.
It was only the Brits. I met so many good people from all over, we never behaved that bad. And I never understood how beating each other up could be a completely normal thing.
Not all Brits were that aggressive, but they'd make up the biggest group of backpackers who ran into trouble with the police by far.

So does that justify that government social awareness anti-terrorism campaigns be stationed outside Mosques. If the government is specifically targeting Muslims Muslims would feel targeted and discriminated against even though terrorism have a strong correlation with their demographic. Now we can do the same analogy to British men here

They'd come in, order one round of drinks fairly early on a Friday, destroy the place (tables and chairs thrown around, breaking bottles behind the bar) and the publican would have to close early on a busy weekend and remain close for repairs. The men would walk away for the most part.

As a Portuguese man, It's not uncommon to see tourists from Germany, France, Spain during the summer etc. The British on the other hand, are just unfortunately a bit too much. In my experience, British people (middle aged and elderly) are really good people and usually well behaved and cause little troubles. Unfortunately, their youngsters are the problem here. It's as if all the under 30s, teens and mid 30s adults just come here to get really, really drunk to the point that it's dangerous not only to their health but to others around them. They come here, not all of them, to get "a one night stand"and drunk with their mates. As you know, alcoholism breeds violence hence the issue with them not only in Portugal but in my neighbour, Spain. I think all of this stems from a few observations me and my Portuguese family have seen, they are not a family oriented people. They highly value independence from such a young age. This is both good and bad. On one side of the argument, being independent at a young age makes you grow and be more mature. However, there is a massive danger here. If your kids are taught to be sulf sufficient, independent at a young age with minimal supervision from your parents what do you get? Young adults, teens that think they know it all without the guidance of their parents. Studies have shown that the human mind is only fully developed until their mid twenties. The British parenting style is a problem. It's as if their friends are their family. They don't value family as much as we do. Family is the root of the problem. 🤔

You can have a fantastic time in Amsterdam, the options are endless, but you dont have to go out of your way to be a tool while doing it.

As a Dutch person now living in the UK I believe it's not as bad as it is made out to be but it's ruined by a small loud and in-your-face minority, most young British people I've met regardless of age are really friendly polite and well-mannered chaps. The issue arises when there are groups of young people and alcohol/drugs are involved but that goes for all young people not just the British. It's the British drinking culture that's an issue here I believe, so many people I speak with seem to go on holiday with the sole purpose of getting "smashed" for the duration of their stay.

    • @Julia-nl7lu

I’m nearly 18, and can confirm that drinking culture in the UK is a big problem. When I was 15 I started seeing people attending parties getting blackout drunk and doing drugs, I have never chosen to do drugs but at a time I had gotten very drunk when going to parties just because like it’s what you did I guess? Did I enjoy it, not really. I feel like it’s just something people do to fit In unfortunately. I try to limit myself to just drinking on special occasions and in small amounts since over-drinking never does any good. I definitely think alcoholism is romanticised in a way like seriously by teens and uni students I felt at a time people would just meet up to drink and do nothing else (from observation) . But this only encourages Brits to go abroad and get smashed it’s from a young age and no one sticks to the 18 age law of drinking. When seeing how some people behave abroad to locals and getting incredibly drunk it makes me angry because how disrespectful can you be y’know? And it’s not just drinking some also just are very disrespectful in general and it’s sad there are some of us who are not like that.

I’m from Malaysia where the majority of the population is spiritual or religious, but at the same time very accommodating to foreign tourists, especially those from the West. There was a controversial incident happened in 2015 involving European young tourists that upset the general public. A group of young adults in their early twenties were scaling Mt Kinabalu, the tallest peak in Malaysia. Like many other prominent peaks, Mt Kinabalu is considered a sacred resting place for ancestral spirits by various indigenous peoples. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a national park. After reaching the summit, these visitors decided that the best way to be the topic of discussion was by taking a photo of themselves naked. When advised against doing so by their local guide, they made a scene. Their behaviour quickly escalated into a national headline and public outrage ensued, culminating in a arrest warrant being issued for those involved. Some of them were apprehended and charged, others managed to escape. What I found most disturbing were the news article comments made by some people in the UK that basically ridiculed the extreme negative reactions shown by local people as being “irrational” and “driven by superstition”. They ignorantly unaware the fact that their explicitly disrespect for local customs and beliefs were the underlying causes for public anger.

The worst part is that it isn't even only in Amsterdam. At least I can talk from my country. We genuinely, from the bottom of our hearts, love to have tourists here and especially the Brits, we love them and we are happy to make them feel welcomed. But with younger people, most times they end up feeling too welcomed. Every year, mostly during the summer which is when we get the most influx of tourists, something happens. Last year a group of kids went absolutely insane on a cafe which they weren't even at and started throwing chairs, tables and cobblestones at their windows from outside, broke everything, people who were just enjoying the fresh summer night having a beer or talking with their friends or families had to run away and I believe the owner and a client got hurt as well. And it was all for no reason at all. In that same summer another group of kids completely trashed the home they were renting, including peeing all over the walls, curtains and furnitures. The poor guy whose living depended on renting that place for holidays didn't know what to do after that because those men went back to the UK. So it's understandable people are getting tired of this behaviour and I think even British people get fed up with all this.

    • @jgdooley2003
      @jgdooley2003 Год назад

The phrase "even the British people" says it all. You can see the difference in protests by unions in Britain and France as a starting point in this narrative. In Britain the protests were policed in a non confrontational and measured way and mostly passed off without violence. In France there were cars and buildings burned and people injured and a very heavy handed police reaction.
In general the British people can be more tolerant of drunken behaviour which would not be tolerated in other countries and this leads its people into trouble when they go abroad.
I vividly recall being warned on a tour of Copenhagen that public drunkeness and loud talking and singing in public could lead to a stay in the local police cells. At that time (1980's) such behaviour in Ireland would be laughed at and tolerated by local law enforcement until physical violence happened. In many cases it would be the slow and heedless people who would be caught by the police and the real perps would get away before being caught.
When abroad it is vitally important to behave like a saint and always be aware of your surroundings and your companions at all times. Try and make contact and be friendly and civil to the local service providers and inhabitants as they may be witnesses to your good behaviour in the event of a row or dispute involving people your may be travelling with.
Always bear in mind that the local police will see ALL tourists in a crowd as potential troublemakers and rowdies. It is often the slow and heedless people, with poor situational awareness and lack of street "smarts" who will get caught and fined or jailed. The real culprits will often get away scot free.

I’m very sorry about those people, it’s disgusting behaviour when going into a foreign country and over-drinking and making a mess of the place. I am from Britain myself and alcoholism is a real issue. I hope you’ve managed to at least meet some respectful people though): there are also a lot of drunks and alcoholics making a scene in the UK as well, they do it everywhere they go. I hate going into town late on a Saturday or Friday night because of the amount of loud drunks wandering around and late at night on a train been stuck with some. Drinking culture is adopted at a young age like at 14/15 but especially at like 16/17 and in UNI basically everyone drinks. I don’t think these people realise it’s not cool to get blackout drunk and vomit everywhere, they probably think it is but it’s not. It shows disrespect to the country that is having to put up with it sure have a few drinks and enjoy yourself but over drinking especially in men causes violent behaviour. Again, I am sorry about this 😢 I don’t think this will change considering the amount of disrespectful people here but there are some respectful people here..

Amsterdam is an unbelievable place to live and its inhabitants have been used to hordes of these clowns thronging the canal areas every day of the year. I know the usual excuses, "they're not all like that," but the fact is, too many of them are! 🤔

I live in Spain and in the touristic regions here people are generally not keen on Brits at all. I can understand why, as they see the absolute worst of us. Our alcohol and nightlife culture is terribly out of control, there's a moronic, nihilistic kind of misguided and ineffective hedonism to it that's almost braggadocious and sometimes attention-seeking and competitive. It's sad. People don't behave like this in other countries.
Outside of that I think we generally conduct ourselves quite well and are reasonably polite people. It's a shame that we seem to have such an issue with drink and drugs. There's nothing wrong with having fun but some people do so in an incredibly unpleasant way.
Of course it's not just Brits, I see people from all backgrounds doing this. But a lot of our youth severely lack maturity and unfortunately you really see the difference in contrast with young people from the continent.
Even with psychedelics, people treat them as party drugs. They aren't, and they shouldn't be. Yeah it might be fine for you to do that, but we should not encourage the casual use of such powerful and potentially therapeutic substances. This is not to say that they can't or shouldn't be enjoyed, but if you go to Amsterdam to "get fucked up" on shrooms then you are giving yourself, your countrymen, Amsterdam and psychedelics in general a bad name and need to find something else to do with your time.
I think our over-reliance on alcohol is at the heart of the issue. Weed consumption can lead to all sorts of societal and personal problems but they are not so public or invasive, and by and large it is nowhere near as dangerous. I really think we need to seriously address our relationship with alcohol in the UK because it's not making people happy and I can see that the majority of the people in bars and pubs are alcoholics, but it's so normalised that they are not even perceived as such.

I've seen a british man along with an adult female, he was mocking people and taxi drivers gathering outside the hospital. I heard a taxi driver talking to another one about that British person saying " that man is racist". This happened in Agadir, Morocco. People with such a bad behavior should not go abroad. Not all people can control their anger.
