- Ever since 2012, I've been purchasing Launch boxes, starter boxes, combo kill team boxes, and many of the other specialty boxes for Warhammer 40k, Age of Sigmar, and Horus Heresy.
Today, I explain why I find them to be a Trap while going through my current collection of each of the releases for over a decade.
What do you think? Am I right in my explanation?

yeah this video is really infuriating, in this case, the boxes aren't a trap, the terrible spending habit is.
Exactly, why he was buying 2 copies of said boxes if he doesn't own both armies and kept them with him? Why buy 2 fucking copies if he is not going to be able to handle it again, again and again. I bought 1 Leviathan box split with my gf (I took SM she took Nids) and we build it in 1 week and paited it in a month.
If you buy shittons of models you have to build and paint shittons of models.
I've painted 332 models this year. It's a matter of motivation to complete the projects.
..maybe dont get two of these boxes?

LOL, nice. Probably store models better than that small transport tray they made a year or two ago. Food first, then fun models to paint and play!

They're a pile of amazing models at a decent price, but can be a hassle to keep motivated through the whole thing. I love painting these models, but something always comes up to distract me from completing the project at hand.

I'm not allowed to buy anything else until my backlog is cleared. It's actually been really good for my wallet. I suspect my next model purchase will be in August after I finish my Kasrkin that just got assembled. In the meantime, I can get higher quality supplies to go faster.
I think your point stands, commenters also have plastic shame piles. it is a meme in the hobby for a reason. If you dont wanna paint or hobby a box, dont. But for sure dont buy more than you can handle.
I don't think people like admitting to their collections. I love having the possibility to choose which models I want to paint each time I sit down. I know I own more than many, but this is also my primary hobby. I'm looking forward to painting the Skaventide box completely over the next few weeks!
Ron Jeremy's kid has a point if you dont paint your models it is a waste of money

Good luck mate. Painting this lot of models require a true dedication and a lot of time. I just recently finished my Tomb Kings starter box and they were really easy to paint. I hope you didn't get two boxes this time.

Definitely sounds like you're complaining about your own choice not to paint, just buy less, I've painted alot more than you have of my leviathan box and I still wouldn't buy a second

Yes, all the boxes! You aren't doing it properly unless you are getting distracted from the distraction by getting distracted. But yes, I'll hopefully catch some of the lives.

it is! Lol, yes, I got distracted by more Battletech, from by Fimir, which are a distraction from Wood Elves. I'm actually quite excited about it.
Concentrate on the Spearhead teams, so you can play while [painting the rest.
That's a good idea! I'm looking forward to going from box to battle ready with the full Skaventide, but giving myself a milestone in between can keep up the motivation!
I've still got unpainted models from the AoS Soul Wars box.
I think a lot of people have unpainted models from previous box sets. We're willing to admit it, and that doesn't mean they're not bringing joy in ownership. When the motivation strikes, they'll be here for us to paint!

Couldn't agree more. I love the sculpts, but I could do with less of the FOMO marketing. (but I usually get great 2nd hand deals because of that...)
I would try to control the urge to buy, it's hard I Know but you don't need them if your not using them
I also bite off more than i can chew when it comes to warhammer sometimes. Hopefully you can find the motivation to get through your projects. Perhaps learning to be more efficient in your painting could help you get more done. I have an issue with perfectionism and wanting to spend way too much time on every model but setting goals and batch painting has helped speed things up. However I think the title of the video is misleading and almost clickbate. "launch boxes don't paint themselves" or something like it would be less misleading I think. I atill dont see anythign wrong with the boxes. painting just takes time and if you want good looking models it takes time and effort to get there. Best of luck with your hobby.
I appreciate your comment. I love collecting and painting models, and sometimes I collect faster than I paint. There was a period of time in my life where I had money for the models, but nowhere near the time needed to work through everything. Sometimes collecting in itself can bring joy, and now I can start focusing on painting more of these hobby projects. Skaventide will be the first launch box I've ever tried to complete, and I'm looking forward to that milestone.

Sounds like you're complaining for getting many minis at a great price.
I mean dude, I was lucky to get 1 leviathan box from my local game store, there were people who pre-ordered the leviathan box at my local shop, paid in advance, yet they received a refund after only 6 boxes arrived, I was able to get mine since people wanted to purchase the ones that arrived
I'm not complaining at all - I'm aware of how great the models are and love to purchase the launch boxes. I said they can be a trap for not getting everything painted, and that with Skaventide, I was going to paint the whole thing before moving on to another project. I've streamed 17 days straight as of today, and I've managed to get 62 of them painted already.
Yeh i don't know why you just jumped at every one of them, have a clear goal of what you are trying to achieve bro.
Perhaps my goal wasn't to complete a starter/launch box for the past 12 years, but it is my goal for Skaventide?

Exactly you didn't have a goal, you just saw a decent deal. But then you didn't have a pre-existing army so the project went nowhere.
I don't know why you keep buying new models that you can't paint, but honestly its fine if you don't enjoy bulk painting or painting at all. What I would say is atleast just spray on the model's primary colour, and then go and paint on the secondary colour. If you domt want to, dont do highlights, or their eyes, or armour trims, or edge highlights. Just make them look not like a blob of colour from a distance
Like for your leviathan tyranids, if you don't want to paint them just spray them wraithbone and go slap some contrast shyish purple on the carapace
I can and do paint my models, and I enjoy that aspect of the hobby. I also love collecting models and having the option to work on a different project when I don't feel motivated by a specific unit. I've never tried to complete a full launch box before, and I want to do that with Skaventide.

I'd actually say 25k in a year is quite fast! I only have 2-3 hours into my airbrush. I've still managed to paint 332 models this year, and I plan on 2-300 more before the end of the year.
So you admit the boxes are amazing value filled with excellent models, but because you cant be bothered painting them you are trying to convince everyone who watches this video it is some kind of 'trap'? Seems like you just get bored quickly painting the same kind of models, you can try buying smaller quantities but more variety in the future
I actually state they can be a motivational trap, and I plan on changing that going forward. I'm happy to hear others don't always have this issue, but yet others also admit to the same issues as I showed.
@@blissfulbadger I think it's human nature, some ppl buy a motor bike thinking of all the amazing things they are going to do now they have one and how cool it will be. Then, they don't ride the thing and have buyers remorse. We romanticise having all these cool models and armies painted, but forget it takes a lot of work to do it. That's totally fine, because if you put in the work you will eventually get through it. But buying even more then telling ppl you have been trapped by them is disingenuous imo, as the issue lies more in your inability to motivate yourself as opposed to there being an issue with the box sets themselves. And while you correct my comment saying that you meant a motivational trap, your title would suggest you are blaming the box's. So, who is this content for? It seems this content is made for ppl who essentially have buyers remorse, as they lose the motivation to build and paint their box sets as there is just too much in them. Again, all fine, but your title doesn't say motivational trap.
Also, a side note, in the video you have a tonne of unpainted minis, I'm sure a lot of them don't come from box sets. So that kinda undercuts the message you are giving in this video that the box sets are to blame.
Great models, great price....but YOU dont have the motivation and YOU are the one that bought all of them, and YOU are the one that didn't finish them. I don't see how these are a "trap". Seems like you just can't complete anything.
