Gibraltar is just 2.6 square miles in size - yet all three military services have a presence there in the form of the British Army's Royal Gibraltar Regiment, RAF Gibraltar and the Royal Navy's Gibraltar Squadron. We've visited the British Overseas Territory to meet the military personnel based there and find out what makes serving there so unique.

I suffered a severe case of high velocity diarrhoea on the top of the rock & had to go in the bushes. Before it started I hadn’t seen a fly all day, but then hundreds turned up.

I did not know that there are some tensions between the UK and Spain over Gibraltar. I had always assumed as modern western nations in the EU (before/after Brexit or even before the formation of the EU way back when) that as NATO brother nations, both countries always got along with each other. Listening to the Forces folks speaking here, it sounds like that is not totally the case.
No the Spanish just will not respect the Treaty of Utrecht that established Gibraltar as a British Overseas Territory and their Navy, fishermen and border patrols are forever sailing into UK waters there. Of course now we have left the EU we will take back control of our 12 mile and 200 mile waters (or median) which will upset the Spanish even more.
You mention the EU as a reason for us to 'get along' You don't understand how it works then. Before the EU vote they were batting for the Spanish at every opportunity, during the withdrawal talks they used the Irish Border and Gib. as levers against us and that was while we were members and their 2nd largest contributor!. The EU has made regaining Gib. for the Spanish one of their objectives in the Trade talks. We will never let it happen as the people on Gib. wish to remain British.
As for NATO all bar Estonia, Greece, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania do not fund their military as they should so that is 22 out of 27 and have been freeloading off the USA and the UK for 50 years.

@@1chish Wouldn't you or I feel man-shamed if the Spanish owned the Isle of Wight or Newquay? They're super butthurt that an ethnic Iberian people wish to remain within the sphere of the UK. It's inconceivable. Really nothing else like it in the world.

Gibraltar is very beautiful. I'm from the UK and I live in southern Spain, and I've visited Gibraltar more than a hundred times by now. It's definitely my favourite place locally

I drove around almost all of Spain and parts of Portugal in my camper and this was my favourite spot

Spent two years there in the 1970s as REME mechanic for the engineers of 1st Fortress Sqn. Border was closed so could not travel. Best time of my army career. More like a two year holiday. It looks as though it has changed a fair bit but would love to go back and spend as much time as possible there.
The British are the best in every way.
They are, man. ZX Spectrum and Rolls Royce engines! I agree as Swedish enjoying UK products and breakfasts (skip their tea though).

When I was younger my dad was deployed here and my family got to go live there for about 2 years it was fun

The treaty of Utrecht ceaded Gibraltar to the British whereas Spain stole Ceuta, Melilla and the Canaries from Marocco
Im guessing that they have that place riddled with many tunnels and hidden caves and bunkers
Hope that we have enough military people there to really defend the rock. I have heard that some in Spain’s military think that all they have to do is drive straight in and drop some troops from the air and then they have got it and there’s nothing that the U.K. can do

I’m sure Spain could do it if they wanted to and I doubt if they did the U.K. would ever retaliate by helping Morocco kick Spain out of their North African territories 😉
@@bleep323 Given that Spain is a NATO member, it attacking another member would have it expelled, in which case NATO would have to attack it in protection of the UK and then the remaining Basques would take over the whole country or whatever would be left of it.
@@bleep323 Spain doesnt have Morocco therritories. Ceuta and Melilla are Spanish like any other part of Spain. It cant be compared with Gibraltar, which is recognised as a Colony

The treaty ceased sovereignty. And Sovereignty under international law entails territorial waters

The Treaty of Utrecht states that UK doesn't have sovereignty over the waters, meaning that the UN law of territorial waters isn't applied. Ignoring the conditions of the treaty means that the UK is occupying the colony illegally.
