When the HMS Battleaxe was returning to Britain loaded full of Royal Marines fresh from the Falklands War it made a port call in Jacksonville, Florida (docked at the old Southside Generating Station). My wife worked there and we loaded our car full of Marines and took them down to Disney World for the day so they could pick up swag for their kids back home.
Big thanks to you for treating our boys right. Little true story for you My parents as kids with their friends used to cycle to the local airfield at pre's heath in Shropshire. It was ww2.....and they used to watch as dawn rose....to see the American bombers come in to land..all the time their hands holding onto the perimeter wire. Some came back OK Others trailing smoke Yet more with non working engines...bent props.....large holes in them or tailored parts shot off. The ambulances would race on together with the fire engines And a little while later the crews would come past on motorised bomb carriages..... Covered in oily faces.....some with bandages.....they never once failed to wave and say hi to the English kids behind the wire.... And......showers of gum or hershey bars thrown as they passed. That's the calibre of these men And we will never forget such kindness.

Fun story, there was a guy who calculated and estimated where would the safest, most hospitable place be in the events of WW3, the Falkland Islands became an obvious choice and his family moved there. And then they had to sat out during the war.

Went to the Falklands for two weeks in may/june 2023. Wow what an amazing place. The people are just so friendly and accommodating. Happy and joyful. It was like id been there for years and knew these people. Thank you so much to everyone i met. You made me leave a part of my heart with you and those islands. Truly blessed to be able to go and visit the islands for work. I walked around with a smile on my face everyday there. Said hello to hundreds of people I’ve never met before. Also im unbeaten at darts there too 😂. If you ever want peaceful, pleasant, picturesque and clean air go to the falklands. Its amazing. ❤❤❤❤
Did three tours of the Falklands in the late eighties to mid nineties. Thoroughly enjoyed all 3 tours. Actually volunteered for the last two. Loved the people, landscape and the wildlife.

That was amazing to watch, a thought came to me if it was not for the Falkland’s conflict, it’s very possible that there would not have been a unit able to be at the right place to rescue the 350 plus passengers on that ship and none of the passengers would have survived
I would love if we in the Canadian Forces could volunteer to go down. Kinda the opposite of us tiny and tipping the other side of our hemisphere, but same parents.
The Canadian forces sent there would have the same skill sets needs as 4 Para's soldiers. The island's terrain and weather felt like Labrador. Perhaps you can suggest to your unit's commanding officer an exchange, or exercise. It'd be at the very least a great training (public relations) opportunity for both forces. And it can't hurt to ask or suggest; that's how great ideas start.

I worked on the Falklands Airport construction 1983-86. As a civvie, I was very impressed how our Forces operate, we had many social exchanges, a tour of the early warning station at Mount Kent, use of NAFII e.t.c. We had a visit from a Chinook helicopter crew shortly after they had had to deal with the Chinook crash that killed their colleagues. Very brave of them to still carry on and typical of our great nation.

I remember when I was 12 and we watched the Falklands War with great interest. Of course we were behind the British 100%. When we heard that the Argentinians had given up all of us kids in the subdivision I lived in let out a great shout. No joke. We were all raised to respect the Mother Country and of course the legacy of what the English have given the world.

This was in the late 70s and the husband of the two was a veteran of ANZAC and regaled me for two days with tales of the history of ANZAC and the Diggers. Those Aussies made an indelible impression on my young mind that I never forgot. I have since always followed events in Australia and have loved its people from afar. My wife loves ya'll even more because she actually spent 2 weeks in your beautiful country and she wants to go back and live there, ha-ha. The big sticking point to me unfortunately is gun ownership Down Under. I am a gun nut and a FIRM believer in our right to private ownership of firearms. Anyway, sorry for rambling there mate. Of course, the one huge injustice was sinking the light cruiser ARA General Belgrano. She was sunk on 2 May 1982 during the Falklands War by the Royal Navy submarine Conqueror with the loss of 323 lives. Losses from General Belgranototalled just over half of Argentine military deaths in the war. She was sunk by a british nuclear hunter killer submarine hundreds of miles away from the action. This should not have happened. The submarine could have shadowed the Belgrano and sunk her at a range of about 30km. That is how advanced the submarine was. A 1980s submarine up against a 1940s ship. No match. No match at all.

I know this is two years old but thought I’d add a comment anyway. When the Falklands were invaded Britain was not financially or militarily in a good state. Two world wars and the loss of an entire generation the UK faced many difficulties. Some politicians felt that we should just let Argentina have the islands, the US also asked Margaret Thatcher if we could just “give them the islands”. Militarily the world viewed liberating an island over 8000 miles from home as an impossibility. But when the Falklands governor managed to make contact with London to inform them of the invasion, he expressed how the locals were in tears and begging him for help, saying “we’re British, we don’t want to be Argentine”. It was at that moment Britain saw for the first time just how much the Falklanders considered themselves British. The UK has and will always defend its own and their right to be free and live in peace. Ever since we have reaffirmed that we will defend the Falklands (and all our territories) like we would the mainland. I’m pretty sure most Britons would see the UK burning if it meant defending those islands and the people there. The only pub on the Falklands is called “The Iron Lady” as a tribute to Margaret Thatcher. The UK does now have a rather sophisticated military presence on the island, so such an invasion nowadays would be far from easy-even from a strong adversary.

Britiain already won the battle of Britain in the air on our own, we also won the battle in North Africa on our own. Amazing the way English accents develop in isolated communities. First, hundreds of years ago, there was American, then South African, followed by Australian and then Kiwi. The Falklanders' accent sounds like it's half way between Exeter and Auckland. Which is about right, geographically!
I remember the call to New Zealand after the war from farm boys and labourers to go and help rebuild the farms. I was too young, but my brother in law went. Loved it. He brought back a Khukuri he found out on a farm.
Very interesting.I really enjoyed watching this. I was there at Mt.Pleasant in 1985 working as a shuttering joiner putting foundations in. I thought the Geography of the place,from Mount Pleasant to East Cove (approx' 5 miles ) was really interesting. You could see that the 'Mountains' ( facing South) had been once glaciated and Mount Pleasant Plain was festooned with Glacial melt water lakes. Never seen such a striking example of glaciation.

As for the deceased, Argentina lost more, but it is necessary to clarify that half of its casualties was a cause of the sinking of a patrolling ship that was cowardly sunk outside the exclusion area of the United Nations. Great Britain hides to this day the number of casualties and the damage suffered by its fleet, despite the international recognition of the Argentine air force. The time will make the Falklands return to Argentina, international law sustains it, in addition and has favorable closeness. Gonco Vaakhor the maritime exclusion zone was set up by Britain not the UN also days before the belgrano was sunk Britain informed the UN any military target which threatened British forces may be struck whether inside or outside the maritime exclusion zone. The belgrano had orders to sail into the MEZ which has been confirmed by its captain and by military intelligence making it a legitimate target. I can provide website links if required or you can just google it. More lives could of been saved if the escorting destroyers had picked up survivors straight away rather than retreating and then coming back later on. If they had stopped to pick up survivors they wouldn't have been legitimate targets. Some could argue all three ships where legitimate targets and Britain should have sank all three but instead restraint was shown by the British forces and only one ship was attacked.
When you sit back without ego and pride and just look at the whole situation the fact Britain decided to put up a front diplomatically and send a task force 1000+ miles away with no chance considering the time it takes to get there and the time the enemy had to reinforce and build up defensive positions it just wow as a Native Canadian I am proud too once be a colony of Britain no wonder us Canadians are some ferocious soldiers

Went to the Falklands for two weeks in may/june 2023. Wow what an amazing place. The people are just so friendly and accommodating. Happy and joyful. It was like id been there for years and knew these people. Thank you so much to everyone i met. You made me leave a part of my heart with you and those islands. Truly blessed to be able to go and visit the islands for work. I walked around with a smile on my face everyday there. Said hello to hundreds of people I’ve never met before. Also im unbeaten at darts there too 😂. If you ever want peaceful, pleasant, picturesque and clean air go to the falklands. Its amazing. ❤❤❤❤
Did three tours of the Falklands in the late eighties to mid nineties. Thoroughly enjoyed all 3 tours. Actually volunteered for the last two. Loved the people, landscape and the wildlife.

That was amazing to watch, a thought came to me if it was not for the Falkland’s conflict, it’s very possible that there would not have been a unit able to be at the right place to rescue the 350 plus passengers on that ship and none of the passengers would have survived
I would love if we in the Canadian Forces could volunteer to go down. Kinda the opposite of us tiny and tipping the other side of our hemisphere, but same parents.
The Canadian forces sent there would have the same skill sets needs as 4 Para's soldiers. The island's terrain and weather felt like Labrador.
Perhaps you can suggest to your unit's commanding officer an exchange, or exercise. It'd be at the very least a great training (public relations) opportunity for both forces. And it can't hurt to ask or suggest; that's how great ideas start.

I worked on the Falklands Airport construction 1983-86. As a civvie, I was very impressed how our Forces operate, we had many social exchanges, a tour of the early warning station at Mount Kent, use of NAFII e.t.c. We had a visit from a Chinook helicopter crew shortly after they had had to deal with the Chinook crash that killed their colleagues. Very brave of them to still carry on and typical of our great nation.
Lots of respect to those who live there permanently and those who serve there temporarily.

I remember when I was 12 and we watched the Falklands War with great interest. Of course we were behind the British 100%. When we heard that the Argentinians had given up all of us kids in the subdivision I lived in let out a great shout. No joke. We were all raised to respect the Mother Country and of course the legacy of what the English have given the world.

After the British Isles, the place I admire and respect the most is Australia although that doesn't mean I love ya'll any less than the English. When I was a kid my parents hosted some Australian missionaries who were here for whatever reason I forget. This was in the late 70s and the husband of the two was a veteran of ANZAC and regaled me for two days with tales of the history of ANZAC and the Diggers. Those Aussies made an indelible impression on my young mind that I never forgot. I have since always followed events in Australia and have loved its people from afar. My wife loves ya'll even more because she actually spent 2 weeks in your beautiful country and she wants to go back and live there, ha-ha. The big sticking point to me unfortunately is gun ownership Down Under. I am a gun nut and a FIRM believer in our right to private ownership of firearms. Anyway, sorry for rambling there mate. Of course, the one huge injustice was sinking the light cruiser ARA General Belgrano. She was sunk on 2 May 1982 during the Falklands War by the Royal Navy submarine Conqueror with the loss of 323 lives. Losses from General Belgranototalled just over half of Argentine military deaths in the war. She was sunk by a british nuclear hunter killer submarine hundreds of miles away from the action. This should not have happened. The submarine could have shadowed the Belgrano and sunk her at a range of about 30km. That is how advanced the submarine was. A 1980s submarine up against a 1940s ship. No match. No match at all.

An amazing place spent over a year of my life serving down here, mostly up the mountain radar sites.
This is why foreign aid/disaster relief supplies should be distributed by the armed forces rather than crooked politically correct ineffective virtue signalling “charities”

That might actually work, I have no doubt the military could do just about anything a lot more effectively, plus the aid would actually get to the place where it's needed.
I would much prefer that I would much prefer the money went to people who actually needed it rarther than dictators that the army would then have to over throw
The problem is usually when the government is corrupted, the army that serves them are. Most corrupt nations' armies aren't made up of people willing to fight or die on personal/national principles, more like a gang of uniformed men that listens to whoever offers salary/food.
So why have we been in Afghanistan with military intervention for almost 2 decades and seen no real change? They also distributed aid in order to gain favour and still the Taliban has been on the rise. What a deluded, short sighted and illogical comment.

I know this is two years old but thought I’d add a comment anyway.
When the Falklands were invaded Britain was not financially or militarily in a good state. Two world wars and the loss of an entire generation the UK faced many difficulties. Some politicians felt that we should just let Argentina have the islands, the US also asked Margaret Thatcher if we could just “give them the islands”. Militarily the world viewed liberating an island over 8000 miles from home as an impossibility. But when the Falklands governor managed to make contact with London to inform them of the invasion, he expressed how the locals were in tears and begging him for help, saying “we’re British, we don’t want to be Argentine”. It was at that moment Britain saw for the first time just how much the Falklanders considered themselves British. The UK has and will always defend its own and their right to be free and live in peace. Ever since we have reaffirmed that we will defend the Falklands (and all our territories) like we would the mainland. I’m pretty sure most Britons would see the UK burning if it meant defending those islands and the people there. The only pub on the Falklands is called “The Iron Lady” as a tribute to Margaret Thatcher. The UK does now have a rather sophisticated military presence on the island, so such an invasion nowadays would be far from easy-even from a strong adversary.

Britiain already won the battle of Britain in the air on our own, we also won the battle in North Africa on our own. We had the worlds biggest navy in WW2, Hitler couldn't invade, look up Operation Sea Lion, Russia won the Eastern front, but don't let facts get in the way of propaganda.

Amazing the way English accents develop in isolated communities. First, hundreds of years ago, there was American, then South African, followed by Australian and then Kiwi. The Falklanders' accent sounds like it's half way between Exeter and Auckland. Which is about right, geographically!

I remember the call to New Zealand after the war from farm boys and labourers to go and help rebuild the farms. I was too young, but my brother in law went. Loved it. He brought back a Khukuri he found out on a farm.

Very interesting.I really enjoyed watching this. I was there at Mt.Pleasant in 1985 working as a shuttering joiner putting foundations in. I thought the Geography of the place,from Mount Pleasant to East Cove (approx' 5 miles ) was really interesting. You could see that the 'Mountains' ( facing South) had been once glaciated and Mount Pleasant Plain was festooned with Glacial melt water lakes. Never seen such a striking example of glaciation.
Very good, just had a re- visit after 36 years and your program is now a reminder of that visit. thanks a lot.

If you evaluate the material lost during the war, Great Britain lost much more than Argentina. As for the deceased, Argentina lost more, but it is necessary to clarify that half of its casualties was a cause of the sinking of a patrolling ship that was cowardly sunk outside the exclusion area of the United Nations.
Great Britain hides to this day the number of casualties and the damage suffered by its fleet, despite the international recognition of the Argentine air force.
The time will make the Falklands return to Argentina, international law sustains it, in addition and has favorable closeness. The same will happen with Gibraltar and other places in the world that were stolen.

Gonco Vaakhor the maritime exclusion zone was set up by Britain not the UN also days before the belgrano was sunk Britain informed the UN any military target which threatened British forces may be struck whether inside or outside the maritime exclusion zone. The belgrano had orders to sail into the MEZ which has been confirmed by its captain and by military intelligence making it a legitimate target. I can provide website links if required or you can just google it. More lives could of been saved if the escorting destroyers had picked up survivors straight away rather than retreating and then coming back later on. If they had stopped to pick up survivors they wouldn't have been legitimate targets. Some could argue all three ships where legitimate targets and Britain should have sank all three but instead restraint was shown by the British forces and only one ship was attacked.

When you sit back without ego and pride and just look at the whole situation the fact Britain decided to put up a front diplomatically and send a task force 1000+ miles away with no chance considering the time it takes to get there and the time the enemy had to reinforce and build up defensive positions it just wow as a Native Canadian I am proud too once be a colony of Britain no wonder us Canadians are some ferocious soldiers
