Improved pedestrian detection boosts BMW X1 to highest IIHS award

- Redesigned for the 2023 model year, the BMW X1 meets all the requirements for the 2023 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ award. While the previous generation of the vehicle received no credit in the easier, daytime pedestrian test, the standard front crash system supplied with the 2023 model earns superior ratings in both the daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations.

Fantastic stuff, looking out the window for a second and someone would lose their life. It is nice to have these features to reduce tragic accidents that happen. Great work IIHS and BMW!
I like how the dummy realistically comes apart, just as a real human would if struck by a 2019 BMW x1
I'm against these safety features cause I rented a Tesla and some crackhead ran across the road and it slammed the brakes and that dumbass deserved to be hit. like he knew what he was doing

I hope you can override this easily in case of carjackers or some other situation where you need to escape.
Yeah that's a problem in a lot of cars these days. In a self defence scenario tech like this can turn your escape pod into a coffin quick smart
Thats a big nope. Considering in some cases that the law can protect thieves and car jackers.
Collision avoidance usally only activates at high spend. I think most cars have a button to override.
what about the 2024 X3?

The environment was dramatically different between the two tests. How can/do you control for those factors and how they impact the pedestrian detection?
Seems weird to use cars instead of a barrier- do they just never move the cars or what? Is that why they have the dome overhead?
Bright sunny day is the easiest environment and 2019 X1 still failed.
IIHS realized this variance that’s why you see the big shade to standardize brightness.
@@SuperMrgentlemanit provides realistic side street environment and the cars were probably being tested to, they were using what they already have

Seems an impressive improvement, however, the comparisons should be under the same environmental conditions: under the sun or under a tent
The fact that you're seeing different conditions likely represents the evolution of IIHS's testing and improvements in testing consistency over the course of four years (2019-2023)
I genuinely don’t think the first X1 had the feature, yes it has the high mounted camera but there is no radar located in the bottom grill, and that’s why I think it didn’t work, plus it’s clearly a base model
The BMW X1 is a Top Safety Pick+ winner indeed. However, his seat belt reminders really need some improvement because they only received a marginal rating.
Is that such a big deal in our current year? I would say that any seat belt reminder in a new 2023 car is sufficient for reminding anyone who wants to put a seatbelt on to put a seatbelt on.
@@sam2920 agreed, I always wear a seatbelt so the value of a more aggressive seatbelt reminder is 0 to me. I'd happily get something with better crash performance and 0 seatbelt reminders than anything worse crash -wise
does that mean if I'm driving towards a carjacker who is pointing a gun at me, I can't run him/her over? (which means I'll be a sitting duck and most likely shot and killed?) ☹
I don't know about you but I think the first design worked better those damn pedestrians get in the way every time
Just wait until a car jacker jumps out in front of you causing your vehicle to stop. While another appears behind you with a cellphone cloning your cellphone because the ordeal has shocked you your not concentrating on your own phone.
Just when you decide to book it and run for your life the AI locks you in your car for your own safety. Your busy mashing the unlock button or trying to roll down your window so you don't notice your car finally unlock from the cellphone behind you and as your car door opens you get the shock of your life as someone pulls you from the car and puts 3 bullets into your heart they do not want a witness
Other than the 100s of pedestrians and other cars passing by who are smart enough to keep their mouths shut and mind their own business.
As you lay dying you may think to appreciate how efficient this theft was and realize how soon they will use your own phone wallet and IDs to transfer the car into their name and empty out your bank accounts
