    It was the right choice trust me. I just bought my 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon in the diesel platform within the last two weeks. I could tell you this... buying a 3.6 L was never even an option for me. I would’ve bought something used on craigslist and then build it up before I ever buy a 3.6 brand new. Too many issues with valves, lifters, rockers & the oil filter housing unit is just over all a poor design. As a Chrysler Technician I can tell you that I haven’t really seen any major issues with the 2 L Turbo or the 3 L Turbo Diesel. This is the first year that they have put it in the jeep wrangler and it is the third generation of the 3 L. And just last week I found out about the 4XE, That jeep looks really nice and I’m glad that they went with the 2 L turbo as the main power plant for that particular jeep. Also found out that they are going to be released in the 392 which she did a video on not too long ago that thing looks crazy powerful, But the Hemi also has issues with the lifters eating camshafts, exhaust manifold hardware issues that may require you to pull the cylinder head in order to extract.. 🤷‍♂️ At The end of the Day these were my reasons for going with the 3L Diesel

    As a mechanic that works on a lot of diesel vehicles one thing people don't account for is cost of ownership - oil changes cost more - engine repairs cost more - parts cost more - exhaust system/def system parts not cheap. Sure yours is new but when the warranty runs out ownership can get pretty expensive.

    Good point about the range! When you started the discussion on gas versus diesel, that's what I initially thought the advantage would be, longer range. That work also sounds amazing, that's the thing I hate about my 4Runner, at the slightest grade the engine needs to kick down to maintain speed, even with stock sized tires.
    Hopefully when you make it out to RI the covid stuff has settled down and you can do a meetup! Not a lot of trails to run here, however the Jeep clubs have access to private land so they can definitely take you out. Like I said I have a Toyota, so I can't join, wouldn't be able to keep up anyway LOL.
    I'm a big fan of your videos though, so it would be nice just to be able to say hi in person.

    if you ship to Hawaii, takes about 10 days from long beach once it ships. Vehicle could spend a few days at port on Sand Island. Your registration and tag are good for 1 year on island before you have to Inspect and Register your vehcile. If any mods are done that alter suspension, or brakes it will have to be inspected by them to sign off on it if your vehicle is there more than a year

    Currently waiting for a diesel JT.
    Getting tons and 42s under it pretty quick.
    For 37s on the diesel I’d recommend the 4.30 gears that are coming soon or 4.56. I know some people that swapped to 4.10 and it wasn’t quite enough
    IMO the diesel is a better fit for the truck than the JL. If I was buying a JL I’d be waiting for the 4xe of if getting a two door, the little 2.0 would be my choice
    Also I’ve got 100 acres south east of Jamul with some pretty good wheeling on it. You’re welcome to come out any time

    Brad, thank you for sharing your experience with the diesel. A lot of people forget it's 400lbs heavier than the 3.6 and has a smaller fuel tank. When you decide to visit Kansas, there are a few places to consider. Tuttle Creek is near Manhattan, KS, and is maintained by the Army Corps. of Engineers. It's primarily ledges, but it's near I-70 so you don't have to travel far if you're playing through. Hands down the best place to wheel here is Kansas Rocks, a private ORV park. If Kansas was a pancake, this place is that extra dribble of dough. You can spend two full days there exploring all the trails (they just expanded with new acreage). The trails range from quick and scenic to "that's a cliff, man." KS Rocks also has primitive camping.

    I’ve had my JLURD for 18 months and 20k miles. Lifted 3.5” with 37” KO2’s. Highway gas mileage is 19, city is 21. Opposite of what you’d think, mainly because the open highway and cross winds adversely effect fuel consumption. But I do love the diesel power. The biggest downside for me is payload, which is puny. If you wish to stay within GVWR you can forget about pulling a trailer with avg cargo and two passengers. Put an RTT and other overlanding cargo, and again you’ll be over GVWR.

    I have a '16 Ram 1500 Quadcab Ecodiesel 4wd 3.92 ratio. The current tires are 33's. I would lime to go 35's. But I would change to 4.56 gears first. But another option is the Rubicon transfer case. The 4:1 ratio would be much better than the stock 2.72:1, for downhill in rough terrrain. So change the transfer case ratio before you change the axle ratio.

    Like all modern diesels not just jeep the price tags amd maintenance costs now offset any benefit they provide in fuel economy. I also would point out modern DEF systems never last. It comes down to personnel preference, I drive historically cummins ram 2500 or 3500 and currently in F250. I drive them because I like the power on tap to use around the farm and on the highway not because I couldn't make do with a gas. But after i wear this one out i will not go back diesel.

    I bought a 2020 Sahara ecodiesel 3 months ago, traded it for a 2020 3.6 Rubicon 1.5 months after and never looked back. I did not do my homework before buying the diesel, additional cost for oil changes, cold climate in Quebec Canada and I do a lot of short drives etc. It can be good for some people but it was not for me! The power and fuel mileage were great but that was not enough for me to keep it. And the leather seats in the Rubicon are 3 times more comfortable than the cloth ones.

    I purchased a 2021 diesel JLUR a few weeks ago and I did it for the torque. Not only do you get better mileage, but you get almost double the torque (vs the 3.6L). Almost as much torque as the new 392! Going from my 2016 JKUR to this is night and day. I'm sure the 8 speed automatic transmission has some part to play in this, but the 442 ft/lbs of torque (@1400 rpm!) is why I bought the diesel...and I'm loving it!

    Aside from some small Issues like. The fuel Pump recall, the diesel is the way to go, much much better mpg, once warranty expire you can delete that Def crap and put a banks system and make it a monster, a well maintained diesel. Will go 300/400k miles, torque monster, I get 27/30 mpg at 60mph with 35s
    Jeep Made a huge mistake removing the diesel.
    They should just improve the motor. It's perfect size also. Just need aftermarket improvements which jeep owners aren't unfamiliar with. 😂😂😂

    most people under-estimate the power wagon. it's incredibly capable stock, and once you put even one size larger tire on it the ability just goes up. i've seen (and taken) them places that I was going "no way" and it handled it just fine. look at some white knuckle offroad sliders for that though, yes it'll add some weight to the truck, but you can save a huge repair when you inevitably hit the rocker panels on a big rock. i've hit my sliders a few times, and just touch them up with some black paint.

    Good luck with your goal of getting to all 50 states! My goal was to visit and spend a minimum of one night in each state before I turned 30. I did make it and had a great time doing it, and a lot of states I was able to spend a week or more in. I was able to get to know the locals and go to the “non commercial” places. Most of my trips were driving and camping in either state parks or campgrounds. It was the best time of my life. Good luck my friend! At least you have a better rig for it then I did, I only had a small suv and ground tent, but it did work out.

    3.6L for the actual cost, the lower cost of gasoline, the lesser cost of maintenance, etc., etc. etc. It will take years for the Diesel to make up the difference. The only thing the Diesel has going is the low-end torque. In the East Coast, that's not an issue.

    First off! Unless you are flying or taking a ferry, you will be going through Canada to get to Alaska. We can give you a load of tips and places to see on that route. Interesting comparison. I test drove a diesel JL last week while my Gladiator was getting serviced. Love the Gladiator as it is set up for touring mainly. Keeping it light, going to tow the camping unit or UTV or boat. Want to keep the weight down and watch my center of gravity. I ran a few quick numbers. Cost of the diesel package about $7000 more here in Canada. On my unit with the Rubicon setup, stock tires, winch, recovery gear, tools, spares & some misc. on board I am getting about 16 MPG maybe up to 18 if I am lucky. If the diesel gets 24 - 26 MPG there is a big savings in fuel and extended range. Quick calculation in the 15,250 km I have on my unit I could have saved $900 in fuel. Would recover my extra diesel package easily in the first 100,000 km (60,000 miles). For me it is torque being that I am not doing extreme mods and will be towing. But everyone has to evaluate the pros and cons - thanks for the info. Have a healthy and safe New Year and contact me if you want some info for your Canadian trip.

    One more thought Brad...towing. For those considering towing, ie a small camper..especially with larger, but reasonable weight options opening up with the Gladiator - you can really earn back that 4k faster pulling with Diesel...torque wins.
    Tested a Jeep Commander 5.7l Hemi...~ 8mpg towing a 4,000lb camper - in flat Florida no less.
    Aware of the 3,500lb Wrangler rating due wheelbase...but that’s part of a longer discussion and what tow options suit it.

    • @ddesilva61

Works great, stays out of the harsh engine compartment where it could easily be dunked when fording water. Other mounting options exist too. My ham radio is mounted next to the compressor as well, so there's more than enough room to easily accommodate.

    Another overlooked item on the diesel is the cost of an oil change. It takes 9qts of 5w40 and a $90 oil filter. Close to $200 in parts every oil change, and the book still says “10K miles or less” for OCI. The additional cost of maintenance may be a deal killer for some.

    Just as a thing for when you eventually do Hawaii. I'm a bit biased, but I'd absolutely recommend the Big Island as it is has the most remote, publicly available land. Although a lot is restricted, the other islands are even more restricted. Waipio Valley is a must-see. You drive down this extremely steep road and can camp in the valley at a beautiful black sand beach. Also, you can't camp on the summit on Mauna Kea, but you definitely need to drive up there.

    Happy New Year mate, I have my coffee too. Another issue with diesel vs gasoline is the servicing and maintenance of diesels. To prevent the soot build-up of the intake including the intercooler a crankcase ventilation filter or catch can is a must. Plus water and contaminants in the fuel system can potentially destroy the injectors. Not a cheap fix. So regular fuel filter change and a prefilter fitted to collect any water which can be drained out from. Some systems have an alarm so you can drain the water when it's detected.
    Me personally if I was living in the States is go gas V8. Gas is cheap there anyway.

    My problems with diesel Jeep are component costs and any repairs to come. I know that the diesel motor will cost some serious dinero to repair. Plus, with the current cost of diesel per gallon, I just don't see any savings. In addition, I'm a standard transmission guy.
    Now, if they developed a standard transmission for the diesel, I would consider purchasing it.

    Going to the Cherokee on “light to moderate trails”, next video-extreme rock crawling with the Chief!!
    Thanks for the thoughts on the diesel vs gas. I agree with your assessment!
    Oh, and I am ok with Wrangler content!! Lol. Cheers

    Happy new year Brad from the Hemet Jeep Club! I prefer the non edited videos, as a subscriber/viewer it’s like we’re just hanging out having a conversation vs an edited video. We’re looking forward to seeing what your building into your jeeps and what adventures 2021 brings.

    Finally someone speaks to the diesel cost vs mileage improvement issue. Same is true for any of the big pick ups. Unless you happen to be driving probably 80,000 miles or more a year you can't make up the cost differential in any reasonable time. Also, while the mileage is better, the cost of diesel is far more (up to 80 cents/gal) than regular gas (and even premium in some places) where I live. Then there is the weight issue too. You mentioned rock crawling and weight issues there. But if you are in soft places like beaches and desert sand etc you don't want that weight. You have enough weight with all the gear. Diesels certainly have their place. I would not hesitate a minute to buy one price be damned if I were doing a lot of heavy hauling/towing. Nothing better. But let's face it . Not everyone buys something to be practical, especially where vehicles are concerned, and I am no exception. You buy what you like and want, not necessarily what you need. So those diesels sell simply because some want to say they have a diesel, or they think the sound is cool or whatever. No different than buying a base model truck that will give you all the functionality you need but there are a lot of $70k+ trucks being sold and people enjoying every minute of it. Always love to hear your perspective and really looking forward to your mods on the Power Wagon and...especially...the "Chief". I am into classic vehicles.

    Do they a performance tune for that engine yet? If so, that will definitely help with the 37’s and overall performance.

    This has been a question of mine for a while as well. I have the gas powered JK and the diesel Grand Cherokee. I love the diesel in my Grand Cherokee as I can get 30 mpg and have a 700+ mile range.
    My questions as I consider a diesel Wrangler:
    1. What about the exhaust regeneration? In my Grand Cherokee sometimes when driving in town and idling a lot, it will require freeway speeds to regenerate. I’d hate to run across this issue out on the trail especially considering how much of trail driving is low speed and idle time.
    2. I’ve found when driving my Wrangler on trails with friends that carrying extra fuel tanks gives the group a sense of security. And I’ve even helped some stranded people who needed gasoline. Is having multiple fuel types on the trail with friends an issue on longer trips?
    Great content. Love your channel.

    Where do you plan to go when you come to North Carolina? There are not many legal places to go wheeling here, but Uwharrie National Forest is a great place to go and would be a good place to meet some of your followers! We also have beautiful beaches and the Outer Banks offers some awesome beach drives all the way up to Virginia. There’s even wild horses you can see on those beaches if you’re lucky. Safe Travels!

    If you get to the east coast, you might enjoy heading to Uwharrie National Forest and heading north through George Washington National forest. Great trails, beautiful mountains and plenty to do and see all the way, such as the Blue Ridge Parkway and Rausch Creek up in PA! Looking forward to your content in the new year and have a great 2021!

    i've had my 2.0 for almost 2 years now, and ZERO... ZERO issues with it. some others have had some charging problems (TFL Truck), but i have yet to experience anything like that. it just goes and goes. it has the typical turbo lag like any turbo vehicle, but i'm pulling 20 mpg on the highway with 35s and stock gears (4.10). offroad, it does like everything does, (guzzles it), but did a moab trip in May and let the B-side trip meter roll the whole time, average 20 MPG on that whole trip to/from and wheeling in moab.

      @@d.shanerose1729 I pull a m416 converted with a cap and rooftop tent on it and the Jeep hardly knows it's there. Fully loaded I'd say it's somewhere in the vicinity of 800 lb.

      I’ve had the same experience with my 2019 JLUR. No issues. Engine pulls strong. I am getting over 20mpg consistently (on road) with 87 octane. I drove the 3.6L and the 2.0L BSG and ordered the 2.0; I found the torque difference noticeable and the interior was quieter - likely due to active noise cancelling that came with the 2.0 and upgraded audio combo. In today’s offerings, the 4xe looks like an interesting option.

      @@chrisenache656 yes it does. I'm itching to buy something. Currently, I park a '79 CJ7 in my garage (because I can't keep it roadworthy enough to get it out of the garage). I have money down to hold a new Bronco, but I don't think I can wait. That 4xe would be awesome. I'm not good at waiting, though.

    I am really liking what FCA is putting out these days. I like the Gladiator, the Power Wagon, the Rebel, the Wrangler, etc. plus their hellcat vehicles. Just great!
    In terms of the Power Wagon vs the Gladiator they are oh so close in capabilities. I've heard that the seats and overall cabin is more comfy in the Power Wagon. You gain some space but the trade off can hurt on tight trails. The numbers below show how tight they are. That being said I suspect FCA was conservative on the Power Wagon's numbers.
    Jeep Gladiator Rubicon
    Payload = 1,250
    Tow = 7,000 with WDH or * 3,500 without
    Ram Power Wagon
    Payload = 1,420
    Tow = 9,470 with WDH or * 5,000 without

    Not only are you paying 4000 more for the diesel you will pay more for diesel fuel over gas in most places, where I live its 25 to 30 cents more per gallon over regular plus the cost of the DEF. It will take a long time for the diesel to pay for itself with fuel efficiency.

    I followed a Diesel rig on the Rubicon, and I couldn't wait to pass him in the bowl. The slow pace meant I could smell Diesel non-stop. So I'm not a fan, from that point of view.
