    I want to go to Georgia Tech but my grades aren’t that great compared to my classmates. In both my freshman and junior year I struggled with depression and deaths in my family and it really sapped my motivation to do schoolwork. I’m going to take the SAT and ACT multiple times to get the best scores I can but I’m worried that my GPA will get me rejected. I also am going to take a gap year and live with family in Georgia to establish residency. Do you think I have any chance of getting in?

    • @SaffronIce
      @SaffronIce  3 года назад +4

      Hey! So if you establish residency in Georgia there will be an elevated chance of you getting in, but I would still recommend showing big grade growth between 9th and 10th grade and 11th and 12th grade. If you can do that and focus on taking STEM courses and display some sort of passion through your essays, I think you still have a chance to get in. I'm not sure what GT's policy will be on standardized testing, but if they still are considering those then getting a high score on them would definitely be necessary, especially in the maths and sciences sections. Hope this helped, and good luck!

    So my highschool is like crazy competitive. Like some people take like 20-22 AP classes. I have a respectable 14 which is usually considered very competitive in most highschools and should get you like top 5% but compared to my classmates I'm like in the top 10%. I know that tech looks at you based on people from your highschool so I'm kinda nervous since a lot of my peers have much higher GPAs than me. What do you think?

    • @SaffronIce
      @SaffronIce  3 года назад

      I myself also came from a high school that had a lot of top performers, and I personally was not in the top % of my school body. So yes, it's definitely possible to get in without being a top % student. You should definitely focus on strengthening things such as standardized testing scores, extracurriculars, and write a strong essay to display strengths outside of the academic point of view. Georgia Tech is looking for people who are academically talented, yes, but that's the floor in my opinion. What else apart from a strong academic background can you offer to the university? That's the value proposition, and that's how you can convince admissions officers to accept your application out of thousands of others.

  • @ruth8115
    @ruth8115 3 года назад +4

    I have a 3.9 unweighted and a 4.25 weighted GPA. I only took six AP classes if I include the AP’s of senior year. I got a relatively low SAT score due to test center closures so I decided not to submit that. I ranked in the top five percent of my graduating class out of ~600. But I have heard the biology major I want to major is rather very competitive. Do you think I have a possibility of getting accepted? I’m still stuck on how to answer the two short questions, and I’m beginning to doubt my possibility bc I know schools around Atlanta have remarkable students compared to my scores.

    • @SaffronIce
      @SaffronIce  3 года назад +1

      I definitely think you have a chance! Of course, I can't say for sure whether or not you can get in, but if you write your essays well and convey to the admissions officers reading your paper that you would be a student who can make contributions to the university then you'd be a relatively strong candidate! I'd advise reading up more on Georgia Tech and honing in on specific reasons why you want to attend. Good luck!

      First, thanks for watching! Hope you found it useful. Second, it's really hard to predict GT admissions, but if you can prove in community college that you're a stellar student and have a strong academic record, your chances of being accepted will certainly be much higher. If you live in GA for more than half a year, I think you would qualify as a GA resident, which would also increase your chances of getting in. Hope this helps, good luck!

    • @SaffronIce
      @SaffronIce  4 года назад +1

      I was an in-state student; I think I forgot to mention this in the video but I do believe in-state students have a slight advantage over out-of-state students due to Georgia Tech being a public university.
      As for the change of major policy, it's true that you can't change your major right after getting in, but in your first year you'll probably be fulfilling general education requirements so if you take 1 or 2 classes in the major you want to switch into sophomore year, you probably won't be behind your classmates in terms of class completion. I have a lot of friends who switched into CS their second year and are doing fine. Hope this helped!

    I need some advice. So I took a few extra on-level courses over the summer because I realized that I chose the wrong career pathway freshman year. This brought my weighted gpa down since they were on-level. So compared to an applicant from my school who took the same number of AP classes, I have a lower weighted gpa because of those extra courses. Do you think this will impact my chances in any way? Also, the way my school does weighted GPA is AP is on a scale of 5 but honors and on-level are both on a 4.0 scale so compared to applicants who have like 4.7s and 4.8s I have like a 4.3. How does Gtech look at this. Do they recalculate GPA or something. Thanks!

    • @SaffronIce
      @SaffronIce  3 года назад

      As far as I know, Georgia Tech recalculates the weighted GPAs and looks at those unweighted grades to make sure all students' performances are evaluated equally. Academic rigor is also a factor that is looked at, but a few on level classes here and there shouldn't affect the overall evaluation too much. Hope this helped!

    What’s a good major to apply as that is easier? I assume anything in college of liberal arts or college of sciences is would be easier and I actually am interested in some of those majors but most of my ECs and electives are related to computer science

    • @SaffronIce
      @SaffronIce  4 года назад

      Hi! So I'm not exactly sure myself which majors are 'easier' per say since I never really looked into the numbers of applicants who applied to each major, but I'd say if most of your ECs are cs related and you want to do CS as your major and the rest of your stats are pretty solid, then just go for it and apply as CS. Even though it's one of the most popular majors at Tech, if you've done some CS stuff and your STEM related test scores and grades are high then you'd have a fighting chance even with all the competition. We have a relatively unique major called CM (computational media) which shares some threads with CS, but also isn't fully CS so if you're interested in that I'd recommend looking more into the CM major. I'd say majors like biology or architecture might have fewer competitors, but in the end it's my belief that you should apply to the major you want to stick to for the foreseeable future. Of course, if you take other classes and then decide to change majors that's always an option.

I’m involved in FBLA, Beta Club, Student Council (Sophomore VP), and I just created my own club that creates advertisements for other school organizations. However, I don’t have many awards and I have not been involved in many school competitions. I haven’t taken the SAT yet but I’ve been getting decent scores on practice tests and I’m planning to take the SAT in my Junior year (I will study over the summer). GA Tech is a heavy engineering and science school so try to take more classes that follow that path (assuming you want to be an engineer/science major) and join clubs such as Science Olympiad, Mu Alpha Theta, Robotics, Programming, etc. Just keep on track with what you're doing now but make sure to dig into that more technical side of school, like STEM classes.

    • @SaffronIce
      @SaffronIce  3 года назад

      Sorry for the late reply! As Henry mentioned earlier, Georgia Tech is heavy on the sciences and maths, so showing involvement in those fields (classes, competitions, standardized tests) would really add appeal to your application. Make sure to show the contributions you make to the organizations you participate in, and emphasize lessons learned or experience gained from leadership positions. Your GPA is great, and if you do well on SAT or ACT, I see no issues with your application being very competitive. Living in Georgia is also a plus! Hope this helps:)
